This has potential health repercussions. The National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism (NIAA) reports rates of alcohol consumption in U.S. adults and 28% exceed the threshold for risky use.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/alcohol-statistics\/\"><b>Alcohol statistics<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-dry-january\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Dry January?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry January originated in 2013 as part of a public health campaign by the British charity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alcoholchange.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol Change UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This campaign appreciates that many people drink more than they realize, especially during the holiday season. A month without alcohol can provide mindfulness toward alcohol use: a healthy reset and lead to better overall habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere\u2019s a linear relationship between the amount of alcohol people drink and bad health outcomes,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/riahealth.com\/team\/john-mendelson-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Mendelson, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an addiction specialist and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/riahealth.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RIA Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an alcoholism treatment center. \u201cFor some, even [having] one drink a day, there\u2019s an increased risk of an adverse health outcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participation in Dry January has steadily increased over the past decade. A poll by the market research company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2022\/01\/10\/dry-january-movement-grows-in-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morning Consult<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0found that nearly 1 in 5 adults participated in Dry January.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if a Dry January only ends up reducing overall alcohol consumption, there\u2019s a lot to be said for harm reduction. At the end of Dry January, participants should see some positive effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"11-health-benefits-of-dry-january\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 health benefits of Dry January<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some research suggests that small amounts of alcohol may have positive cardiovascular effects, more than moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/about-alcohol-use\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative health outcomes<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety, depression, gastrointestinal symptoms, bone marrow suppression, liver disease and several cancers. Koob, Ph.D.,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). \u201cIf you feel better when you\u2019re not drinking, then your body is telling you something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the pandemic, many people increased their alcohol consumption. As COVID-19 remains a part of our lives, that little habit may have continued. To make a successful personal plan, think about when and why you drink. Where and in what situations are you more likely to indulge? If you are invited somewhere that alcohol is likely to be served, bring a desirable nonalcoholic drink with you. Even better, bring a friend who knows about your goals to provide reinforcement. Have a prepared comment when you are offered alcohol to help you combat peer pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Plan for alternatives. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about what you might like to drink instead of alcohol and stock up\u2014whether it\u2019s fruit juices, sodas, or smoothies. Mocktails, or even flavored sparkling water, can be great options. Watch out for nonalcoholic beers, as they do contain a small amount of alcohol that forms naturally as part of the brewing process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t go it alone.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Let friends and family know your Dry January plan. If possible, enlist a friend to join in on your alcohol-free month. Mutual encouragement is helpful when changing habits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Remind yourself of the benefits.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When all you want is a glass of wine at the end of a long week, it\u2019s helpful to remember all the wellness perks of abstaining. Exercising, meditation, and yoga can help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Discuss your Dry January plan with a healthcare provider<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014especially if you\u2019re someone who has been drinking more than the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dietary guidelines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you do if you slip up? Relax. A small slip-up does not mean the whole month is a failure. Remember why you decided to participate in Dry January and how it might still benefit your health, then start again. Changing a habit isn\u2019t easy, even temporarily, and it often requires more than one attempt.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"using-dry-january-to-drink-less-all-year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using Dry January to drink less all year<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you successfully reduced your alcohol consumption during January, consider continuing the health benefits all year long. If they don\u2019t, talk to your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-if-dry-january-doesn-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if Dry January doesn\u2019t work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One reason to discuss Dry January with a healthcare provider is that some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/alcohol-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underestimate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how much they actually drink or don\u2019t know the signs of a drinking problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe CDC defines heavy drinking for men to be consuming 15 drinks or more per week,\u201d explains Dr. Legreid Dopp. \u201cFor women it is consuming eight drinks or more per week. Alcohol dependence problems do not develop overnight and they may take a while to address.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have a 10-year unhealthy relationship with alcohol, a Dry January is not going to solve the problem,\u201d Dr. Mendelson says.
