They work by relaxing smooth muscle cells, causing blood vessels to widen and increasing blood flow to the penis so that an erection can be achieved and maintained. It\u2019s important to know that PDE5 inhibitors do not increase sexual desire or trigger sexual arousal. Sexual stimulation is still required\u2014these drugs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> erections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because they belong to the same drug class, the most common erectile dysfunction medications share very similar side effect profiles. According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK549843\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StatPearls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common adverse effects of PDE5 inhibitors include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flushing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altered color vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back pain and body aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stuffy or runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a patient asks<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/urologyaustin.com\/doctors\/bryan-kansas-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryan Kansas, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified urologist at Urology Austin, which ED medication is the best, he has one answer: \u201cIt depends.\u201d The right erectile dysfunction treatment for each person depends on their age, severity of symptoms, concurrent health conditions or health problems, and medical history, he explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sildenafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sildenafil-citrate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sildenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is sold under the brand names Viagra and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/revati\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revatio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but only generic sildenafil and Viagra are FDA-approved for erectile dysfunction. For ED, an oral sildenafil dose of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sildenafil-citrate\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 milligrams (mg) to 100 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be taken about 60 minutes before sexual activity. The effects typically last four to five hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to the other PDE5 inhibitors, sildenafil is associated with a slightly higher risk of flushing and altered color vision, according to StatPearls.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"tadalafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tadalafil\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tadalafil\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tadalafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a generic drug also sold under the brand names Cialis and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adcirca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adcirca<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Only generic tadalafil and Cialis are approved for the treatment of ED. Adcirca is approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in your lungs). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cialis-generic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tadalafil dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranges from 10\u201320 mg taken as needed or 2.5mg to 5 mg taken daily, depending on your prescription. When taken as needed, tadalafil is usually dosed about 1 hour prior to sexual activity. However, the effects can last up to 36 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vardenafil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vardenafil\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another oral PDE5 inhibitor,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vardenafil-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vardenafil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a generic medication. Its brand-name forms, Staxyn and Levitra, have been discontinued. Vardenafil is available in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vardenafil-hcl\/what-is#dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg tablets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is the fastest-acting erectile dysfunction pill, reaching<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4155803\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum concentrations only 30\u201345 minutes after dosing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is dosed in 50 mg, 100 mg, or 200 mg tablets that should be taken 30 minutes before sexual activity. Effectiveness typically lasts about 6 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"is-stendra-avanafil-more-effective-than-viagra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Stendra (avanafil) more effective than Viagra?<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a comparison of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/stendra-vs-viagra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stendra versus Viagra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is not a significant difference in effectiveness, but Stendra has a faster onset of action and shorter duration of action. The key differences between all PDE5 inhibitors are the timing of the drugs and how frequently they can be taken. For example:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Timing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vardenafil (formerly sold as Levitra), Viagra, and Cialis should be taken one hour before sexual activity, but they can be taken as little as 30 minutes before sexual activity for some patients. The time it takes to work varies by individual.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Duration: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis lasts much longer than Viagra or vardenafil\u2014up to 36 hours compared to 4 to 12 hours.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Frequency: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cialis can be taken either as needed or daily.
