Due to variability in health literacy, studies show that Americans&#8217; level of understanding of prescription label instructions ranges from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">53% to 89%<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, as a pharmacist, you\u2019re in a unique position to educate your patients on all the information found there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"components-of-a-prescription-label\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Components of a prescription label<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The label on the prescription bottle serves as a quick guide to a patient\u2019s prescription\u2014who the medication is for, what it is, where and when it was dispensed, and how to take it. However, patients must know how to read a prescription bottle label to ensure they take their medications appropriately. The appearance and requirements for prescription labels can vary by state. According to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal law<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, all prescription labels generally have the following elements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Patient name:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Local or company policies may also require the patient\u2019s address or date of birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rx number: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This serial number identifies the prescription in the pharmacy\u2019s computer system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Medication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This includes the drug name, strength, dosage form, and quantity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Directions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Information from the prescriber for using the medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pharmacy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The pharmacy name, address, and phone number are usually at the top of the label.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prescriber name: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name of the healthcare provider who issued the prescription.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dates:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This includes the original fill date and the expiration date of the medication. The expiration is usually one year from the fill date. Any remaining refills expire when the medication expires.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Refills:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Number of refills available on the prescription.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pharmacy label also typically includes the name or initials of the pharmacist who verified the prescription before dispensing. State and federal laws also require the pharmacy\u2019s DEA number and a warning statement prohibiting sharing of prescription drugs. In addition to the required label components, precautions, warnings, and common side effects may be listed on the labeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-teach-patients-to-read-an-rx-label\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to teach patients to read an Rx label<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are key to ensuring patients know how to take their prescriptions. Some patients may require additional time and counseling to help them understand their prescription labels. Most pharmacies now offer options for improved accessibility, such as large print, language translation, braille, and digital applications that can read prescription label directions to patients with certain disabilities. Pharmacy teams have an excellent opportunity to offer these resources to those in need. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacist-role-in-senior-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have trouble reading the small print on their prescription labels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community pharmacists are some of the most accessible healthcare professionals that can aid in answering patients\u2019 questions about their medications. According to a recent study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.japha.org\/article\/S1544-3191(22)00233-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90% of Americans live within 5 miles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a community pharmacy. This gives pharmacists the unique position of being the &#8220;last in line&#8221; healthcare provider to see a patient or caregiver before medication administration. Pharmacists can make critical interventions in medication therapy at this last point of contact to help prevent medication errors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription labels are not a replacement for patient counseling. Opportune times to review the components of an Rx label with a patient include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Counseling sessions, especially for new therapies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication therapy management sessions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When patients or caregivers request refills or ask other questions about their prescriptions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During an outreach or follow-up call<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"use-the-prescription-label-as-a-tool-during-counseling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the prescription label as a tool during counseling\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacists should guide patients to begin reading a prescription bottle in the upper left-hand corner and read it from left to right, moving down each row as if they were reading a book.
