{"id":5665,"date":"2019-09-09T08:00:11","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T12:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=5665"},"modified":"2023-06-16T08:59:37","modified_gmt":"2023-06-16T12:59:37","slug":"pharmacy-flu-shot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacy-flu-shot\/","title":{"rendered":"How pharmacists can talk to their customers about the flu shot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacists are authorized to give influenza vaccinations in all 50 states\u2014plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico\u2014according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.pharmacist.com\/practice\/IZ_Authority_012019_corrected_April_2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations. But there is wide-ranging skepticism in the United States about vaccines, particularly the flu shot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you, as a provider, talk to patients in a way that reassures them of its safety and effectiveness? Start with these strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set the right tone.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let patients know you\u2019re actively listening and open to hearing their opinions. You\u2019re considering what they\u2019ve said, not just trying to convince them you\u2019re right. You want to learn more about their position, and why they feel that way. Many people have concerns about how the flu vaccine might impact their health, or their loved one\u2019s health. You can help alleviate their fears with the right balance of educating and listening.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find common ground.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversations with people who are reluctant to get the flu shot can be difficult\u2014especially when the fear is based on the widely held misconception that they\u2019re previously gotten the flu from the flu vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking with people who have misconceptions about the flu shot is very important to understand concerns that they have and work through them,\u201d says Sandra Leal, Pharm.D., president elect of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">APhA, and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinfoniarx.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sinfon\u00edaRx<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSometimes the best example that I give is to speak about my own family and the priority I have around having them and myself first in line for the flu shot because I care about our own well-being. I wouldn\u2019t recommend anything I wouldn\u2019t do first.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ask a Pharmacist: How to Successfully Manage Flu Season\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FB0xKb8U7E4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask what their concerns are, and explain the facts.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu vaccine has a great track record. Every year millions of people receive the vaccine, and over the last 50, hundreds of millions have received the vaccine worldwide,\u201d explains Dr. Leal. \u201cThere is extensive research that supports the safety of flu vaccines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out what your patient knows, so you can better respond to their level of understanding. Many anti-flu shot concerns are not fact-based. The most common misconceptions, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/misconceptions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu vaccine will give me the flu.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t need the flu vaccine every year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I\u2019m pregnant, or have another health condition, I shouldn\u2019t get the flu shot.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu vaccine doesn\u2019t work.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I might have an allergic reaction to the vaccine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I\u2019m not vaccinated by October, it\u2019s too late.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you know what\u2019s worrying your customers, ask if you can share some information with them. Walk them through how the vaccine works, the potential flu shot benefits, and what they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to worry about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, Dr. Leal suggests saying: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While flu shot effectiveness can vary year to year, it is worth getting the vaccine yearly. Even if you still get the flu after being vaccinated, it can shorten the duration and the severity of the infection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting vaccinated is also about others around you who are at high risk,\u201d Dr. Leal says \u201cVaccines lower the levels of influenza so that young children, pregnant women, the elderly or those who are immune compromised don\u2019t have unnecessary exposure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019ve finished your explanation, ask if they have any additional questions, or what other concerns they might have. These little techniques can help keep things conversational rather than sounding like you\u2019re giving a lecture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/reasons-not-to-get-the-flu-shot\/\"><b>7 myths about the flu shot<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steer your responses away from hot button issues.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the latest measles outbreak and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-vaccine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vaccinations have become a popular\u2014and often politicized\u2014topic of conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who is close to someone who holds strong and opposite political views or strong religious beliefs that are exclusive of different practices\u2014or even people who think seat belt laws are dumb\u2014knows that differences can escalate quickly. It&#8217;s a similar situation with individuals who don&#8217;t believe in vaccination,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.uconn.edu\/person\/jeannette-wick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeanette Y. Wick<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, assistant director of the Office of Pharmacy Professional Development at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. \u201cArguing is fruitless and unwise. Presenting facts in a manner that is cool and collected sometimes helps. Repeating the facts\u2014and making sure the facts are airtight\u2014is the best you can do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandated vaccination is a sensitive issue for some people who view required immunizations as an infringement on their rights as citizens or parents. Though the vaccine-autism connection has been thoroughly debunked, many people don\u2019t trust the science. There are lots of conspiracy theories about how Big Pharma only encourages immunizations to profit off vaccines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you have strong opinions of your own, and know the facts about these issues, it\u2019s best to sidestep these topics to avoid a blow-up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the thing that may sway someone&#8217;s opinion on vaccination is seeing that vaccination is a civic responsibility,\u201d explains Wick. \u201cBeing vaccinated is like wearing a seat belt. If you&#8217;re in an accident and you haven&#8217;t worn a seatbelt, rescue workers have to deal with the wreck and others in the car will probably be hurt, too. Remember the old ad for seat belts? The life you may save is your own. You are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saving others when you are fully immunized.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highlight flu shot benefits for different age and special health groups.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/vaccinations.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and up, but it\u2019s especially important for people in certain groups\u2014mainly those who are at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-complications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high risk of flu-related complications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults age 65 and up<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-while-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a chronic condition, like:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV\/AIDS<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young children<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a weakened immune system<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI definitely encourage the flu vaccines for everyone who doesn\u2019t have a contraindication. Children, pregnant women, senior citizens, people with diabetes or any condition that puts someone at risk is especially important,\u201d Dr. Leal says. \u201cFlu vaccines have been documented to prevent and\/or reduce hospitalizations, reduce intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and lengths of stays in hospitals, lower cardiac events in people with heart disease, and reduce deaths.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personalize your recommendations for those patients you know are there to fill a prescription for a certain health issue. Even if the flu vaccine isn\u2019t perfect immunity, it can reduce the risk of any disease that will result in hospitalization, or even death during flu season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suggest additional resources.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how long you\u2019ve known your patients, or how much they trust you, you won\u2019t always be able to resolve this discussion. So, refer difficult customers to other medical professionals who can answer more questions and confirm what you\u2019ve said. An informed discussion is just the start of their journey to learn more about the flu vaccine. A second opinion doesn\u2019t hurt if they\u2019re unsatisfied.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-statistics-infographic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these flu statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/pdf\/freeresources\/general\/strong-defense-against-flu.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC fact sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ready to hand out that debunks common myths. Or, slip a reminder sticker onto a prescription patients are picking up.
