If you find yourself with a stuffy nose or a phlegmy cough, there are a number of foods, at-home remedies, and over-the-counter medications that can provide some much-needed relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-increased-mucus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes increased mucus?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucus is a naturally occurring gelatinous substance produced by the mucus membranes. It lines your mouth, nose, sinuses, throat, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract. Its function is to trap things like dirt, dust particles, bacteria, and viruses in order to keep them from traveling further into your body and causing harm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s a really important part of what&#8217;s called the \u2018innate immune system,\u2019 which is our first line of defense,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ankit Kansal, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an adult and pediatric ear, nose and throat specialist at ENT and Allergy Associates in New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An increase in mucus means your body is trying to expel what doesn\u2019t belong, and there are a number of causes for this reaction. Allergies are a common one\u2014more than 50 million people in the U.S. experience some kind of an allergy each year, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/allergies\/allergy-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When your body comes into contact with an allergen (such as pollen), cells release histamine to try to get rid of the irritant, and that process also increases mucus production and build-up. Excessive mucus from allergies tends to stay clear, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entandallergy.com\/find-a-doctor\/ankit-kansal-md\/\">Dr. Kansal<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, when you come down with a flu or cold, you might see your snot turning a yellow or even green shade. \u201cThose colors mean there are more white blood cells in your body rushing to fight the infection,\u201d Dr. Kansal says. \u201cAnd when those white blood cells die and get flushed out, whatever debris they\u2019ve accumulated will start to change color.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our wellness newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Wellness Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can you tell <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cold-vs-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the difference between a flu and a cold<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Flu symptoms usually last one to two weeks and include fever or chills, cough, sore throat, body\/muscle aches, runny nose, and fatigue. Cold symptoms usually last for a shorter period of time (seven to 10 days) and include runny\/stuffy nose, sore throat, sneezing, watery eyes, cough, low-grade fever, and mild fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also a number of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2683320\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which increased mucus is a symptom, including asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cystic fibrosis. Environmental conditions, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10637131\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and smog, are also mucus culprits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-mucus-killing-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 mucus-killing foods<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are dealing with unwanted or excess phlegm, there are a handful of mucus-reducing foods and drinks you should consider adding to your grocery list to improve your health and wellness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-chicken-soup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Chicken soup<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a child, your parents or grandparents likely fed you hot soup when you were sick, and that instinct isn\u2019t wrong, Dr. Kansal says. \u201cBroth-based soups, with the warmth of the water and little bit of healthier oils, help break down and loosen up phlegm and excessive mucus, making it easier for your body to then cough up,\u201d Dr. Kansal says. \u201cThey also have a lot of nutrients.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/359266\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that chicken soup helped increase \u201cmucus velocity\u201d more than hot or cold water.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-hot-water\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Hot water<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it doesn\u2019t push out mucus as fast as chicken soup, hot water has also been shown to get mucus moving, and it\u2019s hydrating. You can drink water plain or steep with tea\u2014such as chamomile, cardamom, or ginger tea. (Coffee, on the other hand, should be consumed with care: In some people, it can increase histamine production.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, potentially helpful says Dr. Kansal, is that old standby, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/sore-throat-remedies-that-actually-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hot toddy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (hot water, whiskey, lemon, and honey). While many alcohols increase histamine, Dr. Kansal says that whiskey (in small amounts) can actually help with mucus\u2014but researchers aren\u2019t exactly sure why. Of course, moderation is key: One a day could be useful if approved by your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-garlic-and-onions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Garlic and onions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These vegetables are part of a group called alliums (which also includes scallions, shallots, chives, and leeks), and they\u2019re known for their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4417560\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> properties. \u201cThey can all have a beneficial effect on reducing the amount of excess mucus that builds up,\u201d Dr. Kansal says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/garlic-for-colds-sinusitis-congestion\/\"><b>Will garlic help your congestion?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-salmon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Salmon<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods rich in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/omega-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatty acids (which include salmon, other cold-water fatty fish, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pumpkin-seeds-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pumpkin seeds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chia seeds, and healthy oils) are thought to help with mucus, according to Dr. Kansal, due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpulmmed.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12890-019-0852-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their anti-inflammatory properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-quercetin-rich-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Quercetin-rich foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some evidence from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22465384\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that quercetin may reduce mucus secretion for those with chronic lung diseases. Quercetin is an antioxidant flavonoid found in fruits and veggies such as apples, onions, parsley, cherries, blueberries, and blackberries. Though more research is needed to see if the health benefits apply to human subjects, it can\u2019t hurt to add some of these healthy food items to your diet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2-mucus-producing-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 mucus-producing foods\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are no foods that, in and of themselves, increase mucus production, according to Dr. Kansal, there are a number of foods that can trigger production in certain people based on their biology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-histamine-rich-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Histamine-rich foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is some evidence that people who have a higher sensitivity, or a lack of the appropriate enzyme to break down histamines in certain histamine-rich foods, can generate more mucus,\u201d Dr. Kansal says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common histamine-rich foods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red wine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fermented foods <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8143338\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(like sauerkraut)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and drinks (like beer)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bananas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomatoes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beans<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citrus fruits<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-gluten\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Gluten<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a gluten intolerance, foods that include that protein (like bread) could also increase mucus production, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drmintz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthew Mintz, MD, FACP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Maryland-based primary care physician and internist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know you have a sensitivity to any of these foods, it\u2019s best to avoid them while you\u2019re sick.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vitamins-and-supplements-that-may-reduce-phlegm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamins and supplements that may reduce phlegm\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though you may be tempted to hoard all the vitamin C and zinc pills at the first sign of a cold, Dr. Kansal says there\u2019s actually not a lot of research to support their ability to reduce symptoms or duration of an upper respiratory tract infection (though they may be good to take, along with vitamin D, to help support overall immunity during cold and flu season).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are, however, two supplements Dr. Mintz recommends to potentially reduce phlegm: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N-Acetyl Cysteine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NAC) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glutathione<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/air.unimi.it\/handle\/2434\/598104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thin out mucus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When inhaled (rather than consumed as a drink or broth), hot water can cause the blood vessels and the mucosa in your nose to expand, making you feel more congested and potentially trapping mucus inside. Cold water, on the other hand, will help reduce the inflammation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nasal irrigation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Using saline (or sterile water) to flush out your sinuses can also alleviate mucus. One of the more popular methods of nasal irrigation is a neti pot, which resembles a teapot and uses sterile water to flush out the nasal passages. (Read the directions on the irrigation device you purchase to make sure you do it properly, as they do vary slightly.) When using a neti pot, use only distilled, sterile, or previously boiled (and cooled to lukewarm) water. Tap water can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/rinsing-your-sinuses-neti-pots-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contain bacteria and protozoa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can be harmful if they find their way into your nasal passages. If the mucus is more in your throat, you can try a salt water gargle to help break it up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nasal sprays:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Over-the-counter nasal sprays such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-12-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also a good bet. But Dr. Kansal cautions against Afrin overuse: \u201cIt should only be used for a limited duration\u2014that is to say, at most, twice a day for three days only. It is important that patients do not use it for longer than that time period as they will have rebounded nasal congestion and can develop a condition called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rebound-congestion-nasal-spray-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rhinitis medicamentosa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RM), in which they essentially have worse nasal congestion than before.\u201d On the contrary, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other intranasal steroids combat inflammation in the nasal passages and can be used long-term.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Over-the-counter decongestants and expectorants:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your local pharmacy\u2019s shelves are also stocked with plenty of cold medicines (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nyquil-severe-cold-flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NyQuil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mucinex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that can help alleviate symptoms and allow you to get a good night\u2019s rest, which is the real key, says Dr. Kansal, to getting better.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When in doubt, contact your healthcare provider or pharmacist for help treating respiratory system illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/es\/recursos\/alimentos-que-eliminan-la-mucosidad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lea este art\u00edculo en espa\u00f1ol aqu\u00ed.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether it\u2019s allergies, the common cold, the flu, or COVID, there are a number of reasons why you might be running to the tissue box more often than usual to handle congestion and pesky mucus (otherwise known as phlegm).
