Or maybe it seems as if your heart was fluttering for a few seconds, or pounding rapidly, or even that it did a weird somersault move inside your chest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the sensations usually associated with heart palpitations, or brief interruptions to your normal heart rate or heart rhythm. While they are usually not related to heart problems or an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heart-palpitations\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20373196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actual heart condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and therefore are often harmless), they can be alarming if you\u2019re not expecting them\u2026like, for example, if you just polished off a big, hearty meal and are wondering why your heart is suddenly racing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart palpitations are not uncommon after eating certain foods or drinking certain beverages. But what does your diet have to do with your heartbeat, and why do some foods always seem to trigger palpitations? More importantly, should you avoid those foods if you have regular heart palpitations or are at high risk for a heart attack? Here\u2019s what you need to know about the foods and drinks that can send your heart fluttering.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-do-i-get-heart-palpitations-after-i-eat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do I get heart palpitations after I eat?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart palpitations aren\u2019t uncommon: One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK436016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frequently cited study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of primary care patients found that 16% reported having them to their healthcare provider. They can happen to teenagers and adults of all ages, though they may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/palpitations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">become more common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as you get older.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, an irregular heart rhythm occurs after eating because some component or ingredient of that food causes changes to your heart rate. For example, spicy and caffeinated foods can both make your heart beat faster, disrupting its normal rhythm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there are some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17084-heart-palpitations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underlying conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cause them, though these aren\u2019t always heart-related either; pregnancy, anemia, an anxiety disorder, or a thyroid issue can lead to more frequent bouts of palpitations. There are drugs that can cause heart palpitations, too; both prescription medications, like beta blockers, OTC medications like pseudoephedrine, and recreational drugs that can trigger them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less commonly, cardiac conditions like cardiomyopathy and heart arrhythmias are the source of the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-foods-cause-heart-palpitations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What foods cause heart palpitations?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any foods that typically increase your heart rate or are known to cause heartburn\u2014like alcohol, caffeinated beverages, and spicy foods\u2014can cause heart palpitations, too. Having infrequent rounds of palpitations after eating or drinking something on this list doesn\u2019t mean you need to avoid it completely, but you may want to moderate your intake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do have an underlying condition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org\/ncal\/health-guide\/heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consuming these things in your diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase the frequency and severity of heart palpitations. In that case, you may want to avoid them or greatly reduce your intake. Try keeping a food diary to track which foods you ate prior to experiencing palpitations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest food-related causes of heart palpitations is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caffeine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which makes sense because it\u2019s a stimulant (they\u2019re literally designed to speed up your nervous system). Remember that caffeine can be found in some foods, like chocolate, and many different types of drinks, including coffee, some teas, and some sodas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While eating a few small pieces of chocolate isn\u2019t likely to give you a caffeine jolt strong enough to trigger palpitations, Dr. Bostick says it\u2019s important to be careful with beverages containing large amounts of caffeine, such as energy drinks and several cups of coffee.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-fatty-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Fatty foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You just polished off a large, indulgent meal, and now you have an uncomfortable, overstuffed feeling <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a racing heart? It might be high amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol that are to blame. One study in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Nutrition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17374657\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a single high-fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meal increased several metrics of cardiovascular reactivity (like high blood pressure) in people with otherwise normal blood pressure levels when compared to a low-fat meal. If you notice this association, try substituting saturated fats with unsaturated fats such as olive oil and avocados to see if that helps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some rich foods, like certain types of aged cheeses and cured or processed meats, are not only high in fat but also an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/depression\/expert-answers\/maois\/faq-20058035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amino acid called tyramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can interfere with normal blood pressure levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinks that contain large amounts of alcohol or excessive alcohol consumption can cause heart palpitations, says Dr. Bostick: \u201cHeavy intake can trigger the heart to go out of rhythm and stress the heart, [so we] really recommend consuming alcohol in moderation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research even suggests that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/about-acc\/press-releases\/2016\/12\/05\/14\/06\/even-moderate-habitual-alcohol-consumption-can-cause-irregular-heartbeat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumption of alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase your chance of having an irregular heartbeat, particularly if you drink a moderate amount consistently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-high-glucose-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. High-glucose foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods high in carbs or sugar can trigger heart palpitations, especially for people with hypoglycemia, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kbwnutrition.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimberley Wiemann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Long Island-based registered dietitian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople that typically have a low blood sugar level are at higher risk for heart palpitations from eating high carbohydrate or sugar foods, such as bread, pasta, candies, cakes, or ice cream, because of the sudden spike in blood sugar levels they may cause,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-chocolate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Chocolate<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chocolate gets its own spot on this list partially because it contains caffeine and partly because of a compound called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21871761\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">theobromine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can cause arrhythmias, including heart palpitations. But most people don\u2019t have to give up chocolate completely; you can keep your caffeine intake short and sweet (pun intended!) to reduce the amount of caffeine in each serving or opt for milk chocolate, which has a little less caffeine than dark chocolate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-high-sodium-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. High-sodium foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While eating foods high in sodium may not technically increase your heart rate, they can raise your blood pressure, making you more likely to feel that pounding heart sensation after a meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating a consistently high-sodium diet also puts you at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/07853890.2018.1546054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk for heart arrhythmias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in general, like atrial fibrillation; heart palpitations are one of the most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/atrial-fibrillation\/symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common signs of atrial fibrillation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so moderating sodium intake is especially important if you experience regular palpitations or are otherwise at risk for heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-spicy-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Spicy foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular myth, spicy foods aren\u2019t bad for your health: They can actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/is-spicy-food-good-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve your digestion, heart health, inflammation, and metabolism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But they can also cause a little bit of momentary stress on your system, too, when the temperature gets hot enough. Sweating, excessive thirst, and increased heart rate are all typical signs that you\u2019ve ingested something super spicy and are experiencing some overall irritation in your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, some of what you feel as heart palpitations after eating a spicy meal may actually be related to indigestion or acid reflux, as Dr. Bostick noted earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"herbs-and-supplements-to-avoid-for-heart-palpitations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herbs and supplements to avoid for heart palpitations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t forget about herbs, vitamins, and dietary supplements when taking an inventory of the things in your diet that might be causing heart palpitations\u2014they can have an effect on your heart rate, too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1755-5922.2010.00193.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herbal stimulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as bitter orange, ephedra, guarana, and mat\u00e9, can individually cause negative cardiovascular effects and may also cause interactions with other drugs that trigger palpitations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Wiemann, some research shows that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK557876\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too much vitamin D supplementation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause heart palpitations\u2014although, interestingly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/heart-palpitations-and-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also shows that low levels of magnesium, calcium, potassium, and vitamin D can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart palpitations, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The takeaway? Always check with your provider before taking any herbs or supplements because it\u2019s important to make sure they won\u2019t interact with other drugs you\u2019re taking and that you add the right amount to your diet to prevent worsening your symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-prevention-methods-for-heart-palpitations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other prevention methods for heart palpitations<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019ve chosen to avoid the foods and drinks that trigger your heart palpitations or not, you may be looking for additional ways to reduce these disruptive episodes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To prevent heart palpitations, you can make heart-healthy lifestyle changes, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduce the amount of stress and anxiety in your life,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> either through meditation, exercise, relaxation techniques, therapy, or medication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stay hydrated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by drinking the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/benefits-of-drinking-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended amount of water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each day (dehydration can cause palpitations).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ask your provider to check your thyroid health and iron levels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which can cause palpitations when out of balance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be mindful of the prescription drugs you take<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how they interact with your stomach and heart. Sometimes blood pressure medications relieve heart palpitations, and other times, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/familydoctor.org\/high-blood-pressure-medicines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause palpitations as a side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Bostick also notes that medications that upset the stomach or stress your system\u2014like stimulant medications for ADHD, for example\u2014can also cause you to feel palpitations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid using tobacco products<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or recreational drugs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limit OTC drugs containing <\/b><b>pseudoephedrine<\/b><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like some cough and cold medications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be aware of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/grapefruit-juice-with-medicine-other-foods\/\"><b>food-drug interactions<\/b><\/a><b> with the medications you take,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> especially ones used to control blood pressure or reduce palpitations. Wiemann says that, in addition to avoiding grapefruit products when taking calcium channel blockers or beta-blockers, people taking beta-blockers should also check with their provider before taking any additional vitamins or supplements\u2014this can lead to high blood potassium levels, which can cause heart palpitations and other serious conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are suddenly experiencing more frequent palpitations and can\u2019t identify a dietary or lifestyle cause, if the palpitations are affecting your quality of life, or if they are accompanied by symptoms such as sweating, dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest pain, talk to a healthcare provider ASAP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust about every person will have a few extra beats from time to time,\u201d says Dr. Bostick, \u201c&#8230;[but] uncontrollable or symptomatic palpitations that cause the heart to beat too fast or cause shortness of breath or dizziness are more likely to happen in those with underlying heart disease, prior surgeries on the heart, or underlying medical issues that put stress on the heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most of us have probably had the worrying experience of sitting perfectly still\u2014at our desks, in the car, on the couch\u2014and feeling our heart skip a beat for no obvious reason.
