Beta blockers are medications that limit the effects of epinephrine, a hormone that constricts blood vessels and increases the rate and force of heart contractions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These medications allow blood vessels to open, improving blood flow to the heart. They also reduce the speed and force by which the heart beats. Both of these factors result in a reduction in blood pressure. Beta blockers may also be prescribed to individuals with heart arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythms), chest pain, or heart failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a coffee lover, you may be wondering what happens if you drink caffeine with beta blockers. Is it safe? In short, it depends. Here\u2019s what you need to know about mixing caffeine and beta blockers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-drink-coffee-while-taking-beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you drink coffee while taking beta blockers?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, it\u2019s best to avoid caffeine while taking beta blockers, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmad Nooristani, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MD, an internal medicine physician practicing in San Luis Obispo, California, and founder of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/slonoorfoundation.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SLO Noor Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Why? There are two reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine increases blood pressure overall when it enters your bloodstream.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine reduces the effectiveness of beta blockers and other types of blood pressure medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaffeine is a stimulant, which means that it increases your heart rate and blood pressure. If you are taking a blood pressure medication, caffeine may interact with it in a way that makes your blood pressure rise,\u201d Dr. Nooristani says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"do-you-need-to-give-up-caffeine-completely\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you need to give up caffeine completely?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, caffeine affects everyone differently, and for patients who won\u2019t give up their morning cup of joe, it\u2019s possible to combine beta blockers and coffee safely, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/marc-a-helzer-md-9b699b17b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marc Helzer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified primary care physician specializing in family medicine at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uofmhealthwest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Michigan Health-West<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Wyoming, Michigan. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/JAHA.122.026477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Heart Association<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while heavy coffee consumption resulted in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease mortality among individuals with severe hypertension (Stage 2 or 3), this correlation was not found among individuals with blood pressure readings that were normal, elevated, or Stage 1 hypertension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/\"><b>Understanding blood pressure levels<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your best bet? Avoid excessive caffeine consumption if you have hypertension, whether you\u2019re on beta blockers or not. \u201cAnyone in the severe range (Stage 2-3) is not meant to have more than one cup per day,\u201d Dr. Helzer says. He adds that if you\u2019re going to drink coffee on beta blockers, stick with one cup in the morning with no more than 200 mg of caffeine, and be sure to stay well-hydrated, drinking two cups of water per cup of coffee. And while it may help you feel more awake at first, it can also lead to increased anxiety, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and an increase in heart rate and blood pressure\u2014especially when consumed in large quantities or over an extended period of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen combined with beta blockers, this nervousness and anxiety can cause an increase in your heart rate, even when you aren&#8217;t exercising or experiencing any physical exertion,\u201d Dr. Nooristani says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/caffeine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caffeine can have the following effects, depending on the individual:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makes you feel more awake and provides an energy boost<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acts as a diuretic, causing you to urinate more frequently (and potentially causing dehydration)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increases acidity levels in the stomach, which can cause digestive upset or heartburn<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interferes with the absorption of calcium in the body<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increases your blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"best-practices-for-taking-beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best practices for taking beta blockers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to get the most out of taking beta blockers, Dr. Nooristani recommends taking the medication with food. Dr. Helzer advises staying hydrated, engaging in regular physical activity, and paying attention to concerning symptoms like waves of fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling in your legs\u2014all of which warrant a conversation with your provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to limiting your caffeine consumption via coffee, tea, and energy drinks, it\u2019s best to avoid the following while on beta blockers:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decongestants: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough and cold meds containing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganmedicine.org\/health-lab\/why-high-blood-pressure-and-cold-meds-dont-mix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase your blood pressure and heart rate, so make sure any products you take do not contain these ingredients as they can counteract the effects of your beta blockers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antacids containing aluminum: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasheart.org\/heart-health\/heart-information-center\/topics\/beta-blockers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that taking an aluminum-containing antacid may interfere with the absorption of beta blockers, so these medications should not be taken together.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Alcohol: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of alcohol should be limited or avoided altogether when taking beta blockers. That\u2019s because alcohol can make beta blockers less effective or cause your blood pressure to drop.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Grapefruit juice: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grapefruit juice can interfere with many medications, including certain beta blockers, by reducing the medication\u2019s absorption, says Dr. Helzer. Maybe you\u2019re on beta blockers and you usually drink two cups of coffee each morning, but you suddenly increase your intake. Or maybe you\u2019re starting to train for a race, and you\u2019ve never exercised before.
