But for some, exercise can trigger a type of itchy skin rash, commonly known as exercise-induced hives (urticaria). It can be alarming to break out in red spots after breaking a sweat. Here\u2019s what to know if it happens to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-exercise-hives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are exercise hives?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise-induced hives appear as raised itchy spots or blotches that are either red or skin-colored. They can appear anywhere on your body. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2001\/1015\/p1374.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Family Physicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAFP) says symptoms occur when you engage in physical activity and can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flushing (redness) of the skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hives that appear as large or small bumps or raised patches<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In severe cases, exercise-induced hives can trigger exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA), a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction, but this is very rare. In addition to potentially having hives during EIA, blood pressure can drop, and the lips, tongue, and throat may swell during exercise\u2014which can inhibit breathing. If you experience difficulty breathing, stomach cramping, headache, lightheadedness, swelling of your face, tongue, or hands, or chest tightness, seek emergency medical care. This severe reaction can occur in people who are allergic to certain foods\u2014such as shellfish, wheat, or hazelnuts\u2014and then exercise shortly after eating. Individuals with this condition may not even be aware of the food allergy, because symptoms may only be experienced when the food and exercise occur in close proximity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/allergy-statistics\/\"><b>Allergy statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-exercise-induced-hives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes exercise-induced hives?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHives are caused when the mast cells release histamine,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoderm.com\/providers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Vukmer, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dermatologist in Golden, Colorado, and founder of INKMD. Histamine is a chemical made by your body, typically in response to an allergen, that causes traditional allergic symptoms like stuffiness, sneezing, or itchy eyes. However, your immune system can also release it in response to heat exposure or increased body temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe list of conditions known to cause hives is extensive, but one trigger is heat that occurs during exercise or a hot shower,\u201d Dr. Vukmer says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people who get exercise-induced hives report breakouts after a vigorous activity such as running, aerobics, dancing, and bicycling\u2014all cardiovascular activities that get your heart rate <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your temperature up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our allergies newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Allergies Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-should-you-do-if-you-get-hives-from-exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should you do if you get hives from exercise?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hives-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hives while working out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stop exercising as soon as you notice them. If the hives are accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling of the face, tongue, or hands, and shortness of breath, you should seek immediate medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, it\u2019s not healthy or practical for most people to avoid all forms of physical activity. Instead, try these strategies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Take allergy medication before exercise: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe focus on treating the symptoms through the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral antihistamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Vukmer says. \u201cMy go-to antihistamine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fexofenadine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fexofenadine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 180 mg (generic for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). While this doesn&#8217;t always cure the condition, it does improve the symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Use anti-itch topical medication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Apply treatments like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-itch-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl cream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/calamine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calamine lotion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the places where hives appear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t eat before working out:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cCertain foods including celery, shellfish, and wheat have been linked to exercise-induced hives,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/doctors\/1629212592\/purvi-s-parikh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purvi Parikh, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist with the Allergy &amp; Asthma Network. \u201cTo prevent this, we recommend exercising on an empty stomach and not eating for three hours before a workout.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid triggers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If running gives you hives, but swimming laps does not, modify your workout routine accordingly. Or, if it only happens on hot, humid days try moving your workout indoors to an air-conditioned room when it\u2019s too warm. Experiment with lower-impact routines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>See an allergist: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHives that last less than six weeks are considered acute,\u201d Dr. Vukmer says. \u201cIf you have hives that last longer than six weeks, those are considered chronic, and I recommend consulting an allergist to discuss treatment options like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xolair\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xolair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Discuss emergency treatment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a history of anaphylactic reactions, discuss potential treatments with your healthcare provider, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/epipen-2-pak\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EpiPens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, auto-injectable devices that deliver a dose of the life-saving medication epinephrine, when someone is having a severe allergic reaction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one who experiences exercise-induced hives should suffer in silence.
