Insulin resistance refers to the inability of your body\u2019s cells to respond to insulin, whereas diabetes (and prediabetes) happens when your pancreas doesn\u2019t make enough insulin to regulate your blood sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are confused about insulin resistance vs. diabetes, you are not alone! Here, we\u2019ll explain the difference between insulin resistance and prediabetes, what causes the two conditions, any signs and symptoms to look for, and what steps to take to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manage these conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you receive a diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-insulin-resistance-the-same-as-diabetes\">Is insulin resistance the same as diabetes?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance and prediabetes are distinct conditions. To understand each condition better, it\u2019s important to first recognize the role that insulin plays in your body. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas. It helps regulate the glucose that enters your blood cells as food is digested and broken down after eating. After you eat, your insulin levels rise so that a healthy amount of glucose enters your body\u2019s cells\u2014not too much, and not too little. Both insulin resistance and prediabetes involve problems using or making insulin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insulin-resistance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInsulin resistance is a condition when the various cells (like muscle, liver, fat) don&#8217;t respond to insulin hormone and cannot regulate glucose from the blood,\u201d explains Soma Mandal, MD, an internist at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.summithealth.com\/doctors\/soma-mandal-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summit Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New Jersey.\u201d Insulin resistance is more common than you might realize and affects as many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK507839\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24% of adults age 20 and older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, most healthcare providers don\u2019t test for insulin resistance but may be able to diagnose it based on symptoms. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the current tests available for insulin resistance are complex and are used primarily for research purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"prediabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prediabetes\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prediabetes and diabetes are characterized by increased glucose levels in your blood and occur when the pancreas isn\u2019t making proper amounts of insulin or your cells become resistant to insulin. In prediabetes, your glucose levels are higher than they should be, but not yet elevated enough to be considered diabetes. Most healthcare providers screen adults regularly for prediabetes, using blood tests such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-a1c-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A1C test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the fasting plasma glucose test. Type 2 diabetes occurs when your blood glucose levels reach certain thresholds\u2014for example when your<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/diabetes-testing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A1C test result is 6.5% or higher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or when your glucose tolerance test is 200 mg\/dL or more. Additionally, women who are perimenopausal or menopausal may be more likely to develop the condition, according to Dr. Mandal, because of changing hormones and metabolic shifts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"prediabetes-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prediabetes causes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prediabetes-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for developing prediabetes include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being overweight or obese<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leading a sedentary lifestyle or not exercising regularly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a poor diet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having an immediate family member with diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gestational-diabetes-diet-treatments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gestational diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in women)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-pcos\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">polycystic ovary syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in women)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having high blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having low levels of \u201cgood\u201d (HDL) cholesterol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being African American, Native American, Latin American, or Asian\/Pacific Islander<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being older 45 years old<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-prediabetes-sleep\/sleep-habits-linked-with-blood-sugar-control-in-diabetes-and-prediabetes-idUSKCN1TC2E2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep apnea<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"can-insulin-resistance-and-prediabetes-turn-into-diabetes\">Can insulin resistance and prediabetes turn into diabetes?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although insulin resistance and prediabetes are not the same things, the reason why they are so easily confused is that both conditions can turn into diabetes if they are not well managed through lifestyle changes such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulin-resistance-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet modifications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and exercise, says Dung Trinh, MD, an internal medicine specialist and owner of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthybrainclinic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy Brain Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the body&#8217;s cells do not respond properly to insulin, the pancreas tries to produce more of it in order to maintain blood sugar levels,\u201d Dr. Trinh explains. \u201cThis can lead to an overproduction of insulin, which can eventually make the situation worse by further impairing the body&#8217;s ability to use insulin effectively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over time, the pancreas isn\u2019t able to do its job properly. \u201cThe ability of the pancreas to make insulin can wear out and eventually, the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin,\u201d Dr. Mandal says. This can lead to prediabetes, and eventually, Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tricky thing is that you can be insulin resistant but not diabetic, or at least not diabetic yet. Insulin resistance doesn\u2019t always lead to prediabetes or diabetes, says Dr. Trinh. It can get worse over time, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/healthy-living\/medication-treatments\/insulin-resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause stress on the pancreas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, eventually resulting in a decrease in the pancreas\u2019 ability to make insulin, which leads to prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes. But the development of diabetes isn\u2019t the only concern when it comes to insulin resistance. Some research has found links between insulin resistance and heart disease, stroke, and dementia.
