It\u2019s a common mental health problem, affecting nearly 30% of adults at some point in life, according to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychiatric Association.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In fact, the national prevalence <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that 40 million people in the United States experience an anxiety disorder in any given year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the good news: Anxiety is highly treatable with medication and lifestyle changes. Yet, only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/facts-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43.2%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those affected are receiving treatment. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is one option that \u201ceffectively corrects neurotransmitter imbalances in the brain and body back to an equilibrium, allowing those prescribed Cymbalta to experience relief from anxiety, depression, and pain,\u201d says Dr. Hill. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/anxiety-statistics\/\"><b>Anxiety statistics\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-cymbalta-duloxetine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Cymbalta (duloxetine)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta is the brand name for duloxetine. Duloxetine belongs to a class of medicines known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Your healthcare provider may prescribe Cymbalta if you are diagnosed with a generalized anxiety disorder\u2014a mental health condition characterized by persistent and unrealistic worry over everyday situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has also approved Cymbalta for treating the following health conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Major depressive disorder (MDD)\u2014a mental health condition characterized by symptoms of depression like persistent sadness and loss of interest in pleasurable activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fibromyalgia\u2014a condition that causes widespread muscle pain, fatigue, and mood and memory issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic musculoskeletal pain\u2014pain in the bones, tendons, ligaments, nerves, and muscles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic peripheral neuropathy\u2014nerve pain and damage associated with diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Cymbalta has been found effective for treating other clinical conditions, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2019.00365\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nerve damage caused by chemotherapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (drugs for treating cancers) and stress <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1576\/toag.7.2.117.27070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary incontinence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-cymbalta-work-for-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Cymbalta work for anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2626928\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> note that Cymbalta (duloxetine) works for anxiety because it targets two essential brain chemical messengers (neurotransmitters): serotonin and norepinephrine. Serotonin is the \u201cfeel good\u201d brain chemical that regulates your mood. While, norepinephrine prepares your brain and body for action by causing you to become alert and attentive, especially in stressful situations. \u201cCymbalta increases serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. The increase in serotonin is what makes it effective for anxiety,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wmhcny.org\/profile\/sbuch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandip Buch, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified psychiatrist in New York and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skypiatrist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skypiatrist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/pointhealthclinic.com\/dr-todd-hill-psychiatrist\/\">Dr. Hill<\/a>, \u201cCymbalta is prescribed instead of other anti-anxiety medications\u2014anxiolytics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2014when there is a combination of symptoms accompanying the anxiety. Rarely is Cymbalta used as a first line of defense for anxiety.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather, it\u2019s a better fit if someone is experiencing anxiety <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> another mood disorder or pain. This medication treats all of those symptoms by raising serotonin levels\u2014which are also low for those with chronic pain disorders (such as fibromyalgia) and depression. Or, Cymbalta may be prescribed after other anxiolytics or SSRIs have failed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-effective-is-cymbalta-for-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How effective is Cymbalta for anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After treatment with Cymbalta for 10 weeks more than 50% of people saw an improvement of 50% or greater in their anxiety symptoms, according to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2646646\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cCymbalta is effective for anxiety when taken as prescribed,\u201d says Alisha Reed, Pharm.D., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dralishareed.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FLY Pharmacist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPatients have reported a decrease in panic attacks within four weeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An extensive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17559726\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2007 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that pooled data from three independent clinical trials on more than 1,100 patients concluded that duloxetine was an effective treatment for anxiety. The patients received 60-120 mg daily of duloxetine for a period of nine to 10 weeks, and at the end of the study\u2014the patients who received duloxetine reported reduced symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, and improvement in their quality of life compared to patients who received placebo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this study, Cymbalta was well tolerated; nausea was the most reported side effect. However, the study did not include people with comorbid psychiatric disorders (a combination of mental health problems and other medical conditions).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cymbalta-dosage-for-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta dosage for anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2010\/022516lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the recommended dosage of Cymbalta for adults younger than 65 years old with anxiety is 60 mg, taken once daily. Your healthcare provider may start you on 30 mg daily and gradually increase it to 60 mg when your body adjusts to the medication. The maximum dosage of Cymbalta is 120 mg daily. However, research suggests that there are no extra benefits for most people when they take more than 60 mg of Cymbalta daily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCymbalta is generally not recommended for children under the age of 18,\u201d Dr. Hill explains. \u201cHowever, a doctor may decide that it is the best medication according to the patient\u2019s symptoms and proceed within the same dosing procedures that they prescribe for adults.\u201d It is FDA-approved for children ages 7 and older, but may not be commonly prescribed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that for both adults and children, your healthcare provider may adjust the dosing as needed depending on factors such as your tolerance level, age, weight, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can take Cymbalta with or without food. Swallow the capsule as a whole without chewing, crushing, or opening the capsule. Cymbalta is absorbed in your body two hours after ingestion, but it may take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/About-Mental-Illness\/Treatments\/Mental-Health-Medications\/Types-of-Medication\/Duloxetine-(Cymbalta)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six to eight weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see full results. It\u2019s recommended to avoid certain activities, such as driving and cycling, in the first few days of starting on Cymbalta\u2014this allows you to note how your body responds to the medication so you can take any needed precautions. You should also avoid alcohol while taking Cymbalta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/duloxetine\/how-and-when-to-take-duloxetine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">miss a dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Cymbalta, then take it as soon as you remember. But, if it\u2019s almost time (less than 12 hours) for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses of Cymbalta simultaneously to make up for a missed dose\u2014it may lead to an overdose. Overdosing on Cymbalta may cause symptoms including sleepiness, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/serotonin-syndrome-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a condition caused by too much serotonin), increased heart rate, fever, muscle twitching, confusion, coma, seizure, hypertension (high blood pressure), and hypotension (low blood pressure).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider will tell you how long you need to be on Cymbalta. Do not stop using Cymbalta without a go-ahead from your healthcare provider. When it\u2019s time to take you off Cymbalta\u2014your healthcare provider will need to wean you off gradually by reducing the dosage\u2014to avoid withdrawal symptoms that occur due to discontinuing the medication. \u201cThis is referred to as serotonin discontinuation syndrome. Do not hesitate to check with your healthcare provider if you have the symptoms above or worsening side effects. \u201cIf side effects such as an increase in activation, agitation, or suicidal thoughts are present, a patient should stop taking the medication immediately and contact the prescribing psychiatrist,\u201d says Dr. Hill.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some Cymbalta drug interactions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>SSRI antidepressants, tricyclic antidepressants, other SNRI antidepressants, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><b>MAOIs<\/b><\/a><b> (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/triptans\"><b>triptans<\/b><\/a><b> (migraine medications)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.epocrates.com\/drugs\/3746\/cymbalta#drug-interactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>St. John\u2019s wort<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a supplement used for depression), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or opioid pain medications, among others, may cause serotonin syndrome, a medical emergency which is life-threatening and can cause death if not treated immediately<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><b>NSAIDs<\/b><\/a><b>; including aspirin), warfarin, and other anticoagulants<\/b> <b>(blood thinners)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where Cymbalta increases the risk of bleeding, which can be life-threatening.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antihypertensives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (medications that treat high blood pressure) combined with Cymbalta may cause orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure when standing up from a sitting or lying down position). This may also result in people who take an increased dosage of Cymbalta\u2014greater than 60 mg daily. Orthostatic hypotension can lead to falls and fainting\u2014and in some cases, fractures and hospitalizations have been reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a full list of drug interactions. Other drug interactions may occur with Cymbalta. It\u2019s a good idea to always inform your pharmacist and healthcare provider if you\u2019re taking any medications (including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements) before you start taking Cymbalta, and they\u2019ll give you relevant medical advice.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta is not safe for everyone. Before you take Cymbalta, your provider will review your medical history. Cymbalta is contraindicated (should not be used) in people using MAOIs to treat depression and those with chronic liver disease, as it may worsen their condition. And, because of possible interactions between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-anti-anxiety-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol and Cymbalta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014you should avoid Cymbalta if you have a history of chronic alcohol use, as it increases the risk of liver disease. People with severe kidney disease, bipolar disorder, and narrow-angle glaucoma should also avoid using Cymbalta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the FDA, you can only take Cymbalta during pregnancy, labor, or delivery if the benefits outweigh the risks; if not, it should be discontinued under a healthcare provider\u2019s supervision. Cymbalta can cause serious complications when used in the third trimester. If you are breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider for medical advice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-does-cymbalta-cost\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much does Cymbalta cost?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brand-name Cymbalta costs about $217.57 for 30, 60 mg capsules if you\u2019re paying out of pocket.
