Continue reading to learn all about these infections of the inner ear.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-an-inner-ear-infection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is an inner ear infection?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before focusing on the inner ear, let&rsquo;s review the ear&#8217;s anatomy from the outside.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/24048-ear\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three main parts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the ears are the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Outer ear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The visible part of the ear, consisting of cartilage and skin, with a canal that leads to the eardrum, which separates the outer and middle ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Middle ear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The middle ear contains tiny bones that transfer sound vibrations to the inner ear. The eustachian tubes help equalize pressure and are also located in the middle ears.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Inner ear<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The inner ear contains two main parts: a structure called the cochlea, which is responsible for hearing, and semicircular canals called the labyrinthine, which are responsible for balance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"what-are-the-different-types-of-inner-ear-infections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the different types of inner ear infections?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/labyrinthitis-and-vestibular-neuritis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two main types<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of inner ear infections&mdash;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis (also known as vestibular neuronitis).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labyrinthitis is an infection or inflammation of the labyrinth, causing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/vertigo-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vertigo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a spinning sensation) and hearing loss.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vestibular neuritis affects the vestibular nerve, causing more prolonged periods of vertigo, but symptoms of vestibular neuritis usually do not include significant hearing loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inner-ear-infection-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inner ear infection symptoms&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inner ear infections are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24240-inner-ear-infection-otitis-interna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in adults ages 30 to 60, although they may occasionally occur in children. Because the inner ear is associated with hearing and balance, symptoms of inner ear infections are related to hearing and balance. People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enthealth.org\/conditions\/labyrinthitis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may require <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukehealth.org\/blog\/hearing-aids-vs-cochlear-implants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hearing aids or cochlear implants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\/or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/physical_medicine_rehabilitation\/services\/rehab-therapy\/physical\/vestibular-therapy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vestibular therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and balance exercises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"inner-ear-infection-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inner ear infection treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a good idea to see your healthcare provider for a diagnosis and treatment plan as soon as possible. Your healthcare provider may perform a physical exam and\/or order some tests, such as a CT scan, MRI, and\/or hearing test.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treatment will depend on the suspected cause of the infection. If the infection is viral, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication. Antibiotics will not work for viral infections, as antibiotic medicines are only effective against bacteria.
