Passing this exam is required to become a certified pharmacy technician, or CPhT, which not only allows you to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacy-technician-salary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perform more tasks at work but typically comes with a pay increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe PTCE tests knowledge and skills relevant to the duties of a pharmacy technician, covering both community and hospital settings,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Staiger<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., an adjunct professor who teaches the pharmacy technician certification course at the University at Buffalo. \u201cIt\u2019s a one-hour and 50-minute [computer-based] exam, consisting of 90 multiple-choice questions, with 80 of them being scored and 10 being [randomly] unscored.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this sounds relatively easy to you, think again: the PTCE can be challenging, with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptcb.org\/history\/credentials-by-the-numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current pass rate of about 70%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means it\u2019s totally possible to ace it, but that it requires a serious commitment to preparation before trying. Here\u2019s how to study for the PTCE so you can pass with flying colors and become a CPhT.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8-study-tips-for-the-pharmacy-technician-exam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 study tips for the pharmacy technician exam<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you decide to take the PTCE, you should know what it can help you achieve and what steps you need to take before sitting for the exam. According to Dr. Staiger, you can take the test at any point in your career, but looking for ways to advance your skills is usually the top reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTechnicians may have opportunities to participate in patient care, disease state management, or medication therapy management programs,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/hellopharmacist.com\/authors\/brian-staiger\">Dr. Staiger<\/a>, \u201c[and] some pharmacies provide opportunities for certified technicians to participate in pharmacy glucose, cholesterol, and other screenings, [as well as] immunizations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Staiger adds that the regulations for technicians vary by state, with some states requiring techs to be certified, registered, or licensed (and a few not requiring anything at all). Make sure you don\u2019t invest the time and money into taking the PTCE if it\u2019s not the right step forward in your state; you can check the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptcb.org\/resources\/state-regulations-and-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTCB\u2019s state regulations map<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for specific info.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, know what you need to do before registering to take the exam. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptcb.org\/ptcb-team\/ptcb-staff\/zachary-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zachary Green<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CPhT, associate director of Partnership Development at the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), you need to complete <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a PTCB-Recognized Education\/Training Program <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have equivalent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-to-become-a-pharmacy-technician\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work experience as a pharmacy technician<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (500 hours minimum).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll also need to disclose all criminal and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions, and be a resident of the U.S. or its territories to be eligible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019re ready to hit the books, use these 8 expert-recommended tips to improve your study process.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-make-a-study-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Make a study plan<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one of those times when you don\u2019t want to \u201cwing it\u201d before a big test, says Dr. Staiger: \u201cIt\u2019s important to create a study plan and stick to it, making sure to cover all of the content areas and practicing with sample questions\u2014breaking down how you will spend your preparation time is key to success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of content areas, it pays to know how the PTCE is divided so you can devote the right amount of time to each one. Green says there are four knowledge domains that make up the exam\u2019s content areas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications, 40%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federal Requirements, 12.5%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patient Safety and Quality Assurance, 26.25%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Order Entry and Processing, 21.25%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"2-identify-your-knowledge-gaps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Identify your knowledge gaps<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using what you know about the content areas covered by the exam, Green suggests reviewing the exam outline (found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptcb.org\/guidebook\/ptce-content-outline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and picking out any knowledge areas you\u2019re less familiar with. Then, he says, you can use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ptcb.zendesk.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/9310795263757-At-a-Glance-PTCE-Practice-Bank-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTCE Practice Bank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create groups of questions based on those knowledge areas. This will help you study smarter, focusing your attention on your current gaps in knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-take-practice-tests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Take practice tests<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of the PTCE\u2019s Practice Bank, Dr. Staiger strongly recommends preparing for the exam by taking practice tests: \u201cThis will give you a feel for the types of questions you&#8217;ll face, how they&#8217;re formatted, and how to manage your time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To take a practice test, you can use an exam prep book or take the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ptcb.zendesk.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360057979191--At-a-Glance-Pre-PTCE-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-PTCE exam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available on the PTCB website for $29. The Pre-PTCE exam, Dr. Staiger explains, is a simulation of the real PTCE; it includes questions that were previously used on the actual exam, is designed to look and feel just like the real thing, and provides explanations for the answers at the end to help you understand where you need to improve.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-brush-up-on-your-math-skills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Brush up on your math skills<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t already know, math skills are a key component to any pharmacy career. These skills are highlighted in the \u201corder entry and processing\u201d domain of the exam, though Dr. Staiger says it\u2019s important to be prepared for math calculations that could come up in any category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a pharmacy technician instructor, I know that math and calculations are often the most intimidating part of the course and exam for students who haven&#8217;t used these techniques in years,\u201d says Dr. Staiger. \u201cA little refresher and consistent practice can go a long way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-give-yourself-enough-time-to-prepare\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Give yourself enough time to prepare<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering how long you need to study for the PTCE, unfortunately there\u2019s no single answer. Dr. Staiger says it\u2019s dependent on several factors, such as prior work experience as a pharmacy technician, math skills, and learning style. While some people could cram in all the info they need in just a couple of weeks, other people will need to slowly build their knowledge base over a longer period of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a general guideline, Dr. Staiger suggests setting aside at least four to six weeks to study if you\u2019re looking to feel confidently prepared.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-focus-on-federal-regulations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Focus on federal regulations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that can trip people up when taking the exam is forgetting its focus on federal\u2014not state\u2014regulations. Dr. Staiger says some of his former students, especially when already working as pharmacy techs in a particular state, have mistaken a state regulation for a federal one. Make sure you know the difference and focus only on federal regulations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-utilize-memorization-tools\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Utilize memorization tools<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest knowledge domain on the PTCE is \u201cmedications,\u201d which Dr. Staiger says includes things like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/are-generic-drugs-as-good-as-brand-name-medicines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic drug names<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medication classifications, common and dangerous drug interactions, and administration instructions. With literally thousands of prescription drugs on the U.S. market, it isn\u2019t possible to memorize every fact about every single drug that exists\u2014but you can study smarter, not harder, by utilizing memorization tricks and tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConsider using exam prep resources like books and materials that provide memorization techniques and ways to simplify the information,\u201d advises Dr. Staiger. \u201cFor instance, grouping similar drugs by their suffix\u2014such as all [statin drugs] ending in \u2018-statin\u2019 like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atorvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atorvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simvastatin?q=Simvastatin%20(Zocor)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lovastatin?q=Lovastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lovastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can make them easier to remember.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-stay-up-to-date-with-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Stay up-to-date with changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last time the PTCE was updated was on January 1, 2020, says Green, who adds that the exam changes on an as-needed basis, based on data generated by the PTCB\u2019s Job Task Analysis (which is performed around every five years). Make sure you\u2019re using relatively current exam prep materials, so you don\u2019t study information that\u2019s out of date, or accidentally put too much\u2014or not enough\u2014emphasis on the current content areas of the exam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn recent years, there has been a particular emphasis on patient safety and mathematical calculations,\u201d says Dr. Staiger, \u201cso those should be prioritized as well [as medications] when studying.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PTCE is a tough exam, but it\u2019s not impossible to pass. If you take your preparation seriously, commit to studying the knowledge domains, and practice your test-taking skills, you can walk away from your first exam attempt ready to show off your shiny new CPhT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you don\u2019t pass on the first try, that\u2019s okay, too: you can retake the PTCE as many times as you need to in order to pass, though there is a six-month waiting period after the third attempt and additional restrictions about how often you can take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the exam in a 12-month period (so make sure you brush up on the PTCB\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptcb.org\/guidebook\/after-the-exam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retake policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether you\u2019ve been working as a pharmacy assistant for a while and are ready to take on more job responsibilities or are just beginning to consider a career in the pharmacy field, you might have heard about the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE).
