But it does depend in part on where the weight is.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4038351\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us that not all weight gain (or obesity) is the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople that naturally gain weight in their belly are more prone to insulin resistance,\u201d notes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/texasdiabetes.com\/about-us\/our-advanced-practice-providers\/brandy-wellmon\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bran<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">y Wellmo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n, PA-C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a physician assistant and certified diabetes educator with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/texasdiabetes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas Diabetes &amp; Endocrinology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A big belly, or a potbelly, is a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/24147-visceral-fat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sign of visceral fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Cleveland Clinic. If you have extra weight in your abdominal area, those excess pounds may be visceral adipose tissue, surrounding your internal organs. Visceral adipose tissue is hormonally active and can interfere with insulin signaling. This is different from the fat that lies just beneath your skin, which is known as subcutaneous fat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts say that those with insulin resistance can still lose weight\u2014though it may be more difficult. \u201cWeight loss can be a challenge for anyone,\u201d says<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natasha Agbai<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a pediatrician who specializes in obesity medicine and founder of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weightlossforkids.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight Loss for Kids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFor someone with insulin resistance, it\u2019s an even bigger challenge due to the way their body processes glucose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your cells don\u2019t respond to insulin very well, levels of insulin increase as does glucose in your bloodstream. Understanding what constitutes a healthy weight for you can help you set a goal, and then you can work toward that number. Here are some strategies to help you lose weight and improve insulin sensitivity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-incorporate-healthy-foods-into-your-diet\"><b>1. Incorporate healthy foods into your diet<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, you can work on keeping your blood glucose levels well controlled by eating right, says registered dietitian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/simplestartnutrition.com\/?page_id=85\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amanda Stahl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RD, LDN, co-owner of Simple Start Nutrition. Assess what is missing from your current diet so you\u2019ll know what to add. For example, substitute brown rice for white rice, or opt for whole-grain bread rather than white bread. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20881074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that eating a diet rich in whole grains, rather than refined grains, can lower your propensity for putting on visceral adipose tissue, aka belly fat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But don\u2019t stop there. \u201cWe want to focus on a wide variety of fruits and non-starchy vegetables (i.e., broccoli, mushrooms, and salad greens), whole grain starches (instead of the white, pasty items), nuts and nut butter, and legumes (i.e., beans and lentils),\u201d Stahl says. \u201cWe also want to ensure that we are including lean protein sources into our diet, i.e., chicken, turkey, eggs, and fish while including moderate amounts of dairy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulin-resistance-diet\/\"><b>The best diet for insulin resistance<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-cut-back-on-unhealthy-foods\"><b>2. Consume more fiber<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to tackle stubborn body fat, try adding more fiber to your diet plan, too. Increasing both your total dietary fiber and insoluble fiber may help you reduce some of that adipose tissue in your abdomen, according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3856431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obesity<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-drink-less-alcohol\"><b>5. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12888654\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests an association between central adiposity and consuming multiple alcoholic drinks per day. In other words, if you\u2019re trying to shed some belly weight, start by reducing or even eliminating your alcohol consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-exercise\"><b>6. Exercise<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While diet matters when it comes to losing weight, so does regular physical activity. \u201cExercise is also very beneficial for improving insulin sensitivity, as it increases glucose uptake into the cells,\u201d says Dr. Agbai. \u201cExercise helps not only to reduce fat but also increases the availability of glucose receptors on cell surfaces\u2014making them more sensitive to available glucose or other nutrients needed for energy production.\u201d If you\u2019re not exercising regularly, consider talking to a professional trainer or another expert to get tips on how to get started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-consider-weight-loss-medication\"><strong>7. Consider weight-loss medication<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might want to discussi a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-weight-loss-pills\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight-loss medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your primary healthcare provider or endocrinologist, especially if dietary changes and exercise aren\u2019t working as effectively as you\u2019d like. To qualify for a prescription <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/obesity-and-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight-loss drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you must have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater or have a BMI of 27 or greater with at least one weight-related disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, or diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you already have Type 2 diabetes, your healthcare provider might prescribe a diabetes medication known for suppressing appetite and helping with weight loss. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a commonly used diabetes drug that also suppresses appetite, aiding in weight loss. Another class of medications, called<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is known to be effective in helping people lose weight. Semaglutide is now also available specifically as a weight-loss drug for people with obesity or excess weight and a weight-related medical problem. That version is sold under the name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Your doctor can also prescribe the above medications off label, but your insurance may not cover it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-reduce-your-stress-levels\"><b>8. Reduce your stress levels<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are stressed out, the body releases hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Unfortunately, those<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org.uk\/guide-to-diabetes\/emotions\/stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormones contribute to insulin resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That can make your blood sugar levels rise, and it may also impede your efforts to lose weight. There are<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/stress-management\/in-depth\/stress-relievers\/art-20047257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">great stress management strategies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out there, such as mindfulness, meditation, exercise, making social connections, journaling, and making music. Pick your preferred stress relief activity and embrace it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-get-adequate-sleep\"><strong>9. Get adequate sleep<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can\u2019t overlook sleep because sleep significantly improves metabolic function for people suffering from obesity\/insulin resistance issues,\u201d Dr. Agbai says. \u201cInadequate rest impairs hormones related to appetite control, such as ghrelin, which reduces your ability to regulate hunger pangs safely without overeating or indulging in unhealthy snacks throughout the day.\u201d Additionally, she notes, if you don\u2019t get enough quality sleep, your body produces extra cortisol, which makes fat loss more difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-fastest-way-to-lose-weight-with-insulin-resistance\"><b>What is the fastest way to lose weight with insulin resistance?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone wants a quick fix. But patience is necessary for successful weight-loss. \u201cWe expect to see results immediately,\u201d says Wellmon. \u201cIf you set your expectations to attainable goals, then the first and most important thing to remember is you should stick with your lifestyle improvements for at least three months before you should expect to see a significant amount of weight loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Agbai agrees that making changes in diet or exercise regimen are best made gradually over time\u2014and in consultation with a healthcare provider or nutritionist who is knowledgeable about insulin resistance. If you\u2019re making positive changes and the weight still won\u2019t come off, your healthcare team can help with other options for weight management.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line-insulin-resistance-and-weight-loss\"><b>The bottom line &#8211; Insulin resistance and weight loss<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re overweight or obese, losing weight significantly reduces your chances of developing health conditions such as cardiovascular disease or metabolic syndrome.
