If you\u2019re one of them, you might be sick of living with allergy symptoms in your own home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAllergies are a condition in which the immune system reacts abnormally to a foreign substance,\u201d explains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Henry Hiltzik, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the interim chair of otolaryngology at Northwell Health\u2019s Staten Island University Hospital in New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, these substances are harmless to most people but trigger the immune system to release chemicals like histamines, leading to allergy symptoms, in those prone to allergies. \u201cIndoor and outdoor allergies are similar in the reactions they provoke in the body, but it is thought that indoor allergies can be more severe and harmful,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/otolaryngology\/dr-david-henry-hiltzik-md-11355160\">Dr. Hiltzik<\/a> says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the symptoms may present the same, indoor allergies have different triggers and causes than seasonal allergies. Here\u2019s what you need to know about what allergy triggers may be present in your home and what you can do about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"causes-and-common-symptoms-of-indoor-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes and common symptoms of indoor allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outdoor pollen is a primary cause of seasonal allergies, but indoor allergies are caused by airborne allergens in your own home. This is why retreating inside doesn\u2019t always help allergy symptoms subside. Identifying what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/spring-allergies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their triggers can help you take the necessary steps to address them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor allergies have three main causes: dust mites, pet dander, and mold, explains allergist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/people\/shyam-joshi-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shyam Joshi, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor of medicine at Oregon Health &amp; Science University and chief medical officer of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynectar.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nectar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Portland, Oregon. Cockroaches can also bring allergens into the home, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/Tools-for-the-Public\/Conditions-Library\/Allergies\/Indoor-allergens-TTR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAAAI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience any of the following common symptoms, they could be chalked up to allergens in the home, namely dust mites, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/dust-mites\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postnasal drip<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scratchy throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these symptoms overlap with seasonal allergies, but experiencing them year-round is a telltale sign that indoor allergens are the root cause of your symptoms. Fortunately, there are ways around this\u2014mainly involving improving the air quality in your home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7-ways-to-reduce-in-home-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 ways to reduce in-home allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to avoiding indoor symptoms is to reduce airborne allergens. To do so, you\u2019ll need to keep surfaces, bedding, and other materials clean. Here\u2019s what you can do immediately to reduce in-home allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-use-hepa-air-purifiers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Use HEPA air purifiers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do air purifiers actually help reduce allergies? Yes, they do\u2014though they\u2019re more like air cleaners than purifiers. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/news\/hepa-help-hype\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy and Asthma Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the key is to use one with a HEPA filter, which is designed to capture 99.7% of all particles 0.3 microns or smaller.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsing HEPA filters, or high-efficiency particulate air filters, are very effective in reducing overall exposure to common allergens found indoors and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7393300\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been proven<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce allergy symptoms like itchy eyes, sneezing, and runny nose,\u201d Dr. Joshi says, adding that you\u2019ll need a HEPA filter in each room. One cleaner isn\u2019t enough for an entire home. If you start with one room at a time, prioritize bedrooms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-decrease-humidity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Decrease humidity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While humidifiers help soothe dry nasal passageways in the winter, they can worsen indoor allergies. Dust mites thrive where there is moisture, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/humidifiers-and-indoor-allergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AAAAI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOne tip is to decrease humidity and moisture in the home, which helps reduce mold and dust mites,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.austinregionalclinic.com\/doctors\/kelly-simpson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelly Simpson, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified allergist at Austin Regional Clinic in Texas. Instead, use a dehumidifier, or run your central air system to reduce moisture levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-use-dust-mite-covers-on-your-bedding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Use dust mite covers on your bedding<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As gross as it sounds, your bed is likely crawling with thousands of dust mites\u2014one of the main causes of allergy symptoms indoors. Special bedding covers, often called dust mite covers, create a physical barrier that can reduce your exposure to dust mites, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/do-hypoallergenic-pillow-and-mattress-covers-really-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDust mite covers are very effective,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/about-us\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purvi Parikh, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist at the Allergy and Asthma Network in New York City and a clinical assistant professor in medicine at New York University School of Medicine. \u201cThe pores are small enough so that the particles do not go through.\u201d You can use coverings on your mattress, box spring, and pillows for full protection. Then, wash your bedding regularly in hot water to further reduce your exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-clean-the-house-regularly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Clean the house regularly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish a weekly cleaning routine that includes dusting, vacuuming, and washing the fabrics in your house. \u201cDust is one of the most common irritants for indoor allergies, and cleaning the house regularly helps minimize the presence of dust,\u201d Dr. Joshi says. Children\u2019s stuffed animals are often a source of dust mites, so you should clean those, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-bathe-pets-often\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Bathe pets often<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your four-legged friends can also track allergens from outside to indoors. Or, by depositing their dander in different locations. \u201cHousehold pets are a common source of indoor allergies as they transport respiratory allergies around the house,\u201d Dr. Joshi says. If you\u2019ve identified pet dander as one of your triggers, bathing your pet regularly could help, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/allergies\/in-depth\/allergy\/art-20049365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-remove-your-shoes-when-you-get-home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Remove your shoes when you get home<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re prone to seasonal and indoor allergies, avoid bringing outdoor allergens into your home. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3040605\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that pet dander allergens can be brought into the home even if you don\u2019t own pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removing your shoes and changing clothes when you get home is especially helpful during peak pollen season\u2014you don\u2019t want to transport these allergens in your home or get them into your bed. You may even consider showering when you get home or before going to sleep to keep your bedroom as allergen-free as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-use-allergy-friendly-materials-in-your-home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Use allergy-friendly materials in your home<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible, Dr. Hiltzik recommends removing all carpets, rugs, and drapery. Allergens can cling to these materials, making them more likely to stir up your symptoms. Wall-to-wall carpet, high-pile rugs, heavy drapes, and fabric furniture can all harbor dust mites and should be kept to a minimum, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/allergies\/prevent-allergies\/control-indoor-allergens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAFA). If you must have them, keep them clean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also recommends choosing hypoallergenic bedding materials, such as pillows, sheets, and comforters. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/community.aafa.org\/blog\/protect-yourself-from-dust-mites-with-asthma-and-allergy-friendly-pillows-and-pillow-covers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AAFA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, allergy-friendly pillows and pillow covers are made with a special outer fabric that blocks dust mites from passing through.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatment-options-for-when-other-strategies-aren-t-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment options for when other strategies aren\u2019t working<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When these strategies aren\u2019t providing enough relief, you still have a few more options to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/8-ways-treat-seasonal-allergies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Allergists recommend:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Allergen avoidance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as staying indoors when pollen counts are high, but this can be difficult if your allergens are in your own home.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Over-the-counter medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can provide relief, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zyrtec-vs-benadryl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/phenylephrine-vs-pseudoephedrine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decongestants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rhinocort-vs-flonase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nasal sprays<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and nasal rinses.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-shots\/\"><b>Allergen immunotherapy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, specifically allergy shots or sublingual drops or tablets, is a preventive treatment that treats the root cause and can offer life-long relief from allergies,\u201d Dr. Joshi says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out what\u2019s causing your allergies, you may need to see an allergist\u2014he or she can perform blood or skin tests to uncover triggers.
