Yet, it\u2019s also possible to overdose by simply using it incorrectly\u2014on purpose or accidentally. It\u2019s important to know the recommended uses for this antihistamine, the correct dosing, as well as the signs of potential overdose, and what to do if you suspect you or someone else has taken too much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the ingredients of Benadryl?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, the active ingredient in Benadryl is diphenhydramine. \u201cAntihistamines such as diphenhydramine block the activity of histamine, a chemical that is released by the body after exposure to allergens,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/kelly-johnson-arbor-bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelly Johnson-Arbor, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical toxicologist and medical director at the National Capital Poison Center<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHistamine release is responsible for many of the signs and symptoms associated with allergic reactions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some symptoms of allergies or an allergic reaction include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rash, hives, or itchy skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watery, itchy eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain or tenderness around cheeks, eyes, or forehead<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing, wheezing, or breathlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling or being sick<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen eyes, lips, mouth, or throat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl can usually help put a stop to mild to moderate allergy symptoms, though some allergic reactions are life-threatening and require treatment with an EpiPen. Sudden, severe symptoms onset can signal an emergency. In that case, call 911 or seek emergency assistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other uses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl is also an antiemetic, which means it helps prevent and treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/motion-sickness-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">motion sickness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is also used to treat certain patients with Parkinson\u2019s disease because it can decrease stiffness or tremors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it causes sleepiness as a side effect, Benadryl is often used as a sleep aid. However, Benadryl is not approved in the U.S. to manage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-related sleepless nights. \u201cIt can cause drowsiness due to histamine receptors sites in the central nervous system,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christina M. Diphenhydramine overdose can, if untreated, lead to death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl comes in many formulations, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy-con-ultratabs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy-childrens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral liquids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and topically, as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-itch-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gel, spray, or cream<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and is dosed differently depending on the form, what it\u2019s being used for, and whether it is for an adult or child. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Benadryl for adults and children 12 and older is 25 mg-50 mg by mouth, every four to six hours as needed. Do not exceed 300 mg\/day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children ages 6-11 can take 12.5-25 mg of Children\u2019s Benadryl Chewables every four to six hours. Do not exceed 150 mg\/day. \u201cHowever, since children\u2019s dosing recommendations may vary between Benadryl products, it\u2019s best to check the package label for dosing instructions to ensure appropriate and safe dosing,\u201d says Dr. Johnson-Arbor. Or, you can always ask your pharmacist for help with dosing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosing for the topical versions of Benadryl will differ, so always follow package instructions or consult your healthcare provider. Shared and spread primarily by adolescents and young adults on TikTok, this phenomenon urged people to take excessive amounts of Benadryl with the goal of inciting hallucinations. These \u201ctrips\u201d were then documented for entertainment purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/medical-product-safety-information\/benadryl-diphenhydramine-drug-safety-communication-serious-problems-high-doses-allergy-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in September 2020 explaining that people, primarily teenagers, have been ending up in the emergency room and dying because of ingestion of high doses of Benadryl, which was leading to drug overdose and severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> beyond hallucinations, including coma, seizures, and irregular heartbeats. The statement recommended caregivers store Benadryl and similar products \u201cup and away\u201d from children, or locked up, so kids and adolescents could not gain access.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also urged healthcare professionals to be aware of this trend so they can be on the lookout for this concerning behavior. Similarly, parents and caregivers should be aware of these viral challenges since it is sometimes difficult to moderate content on social media apps such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Look into parental controls on your devices and the internet, but also, make sure you talk to kids about the dangers of following along with these challenges since they may still be exposed to them from peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abuse of medications for any reason is not recommended as it is very dangerous. Always use over-the-counter and prescription medications only as intended. If you suspect medication misuse, seek help from a healthcare provider or trusted specialist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do in the event of a Benadryl overdose<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or someone you are with is suspected to have overdosed on Benadryl, you should act quickly. \u201cIf someone takes too much Benadryl or experiences unwanted or unexpected symptoms after use of Benadryl, contact Poison Control immediately for fast and expert advice,\u201d says Dr. Johnson-Arbor. \u201cDo not make the affected individual vomit or let them \u2018sleep it off.\u2019\u201d There are two ways to contact Poison Control in the United States: online at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poison.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">www.poison.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or by phone at 1-800-222-1222. Both options are free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your poison control center recommends it, or, \u201cIf someone has taken an excessive amount of Benadryl, they should be taken to the emergency room,\u201d says Dr. Madison. You can also call 911 if you are not sure. \u201cThey may require the use of activated charcoal or have their stomachs pumped,\u201d explains Dr. Madison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, \u201cIt is possible for an individual to recover from a Benadryl overdose, especially if the overdose is recognized in a timely manner and appropriate medical care is provided,\u201d says Dr. Johnson-Arbor.
