Caffeine is the world\u2019s most-consumed drug\u2014found in the leaves and fruits of some plants, and a key ingredient in caffeinated beverages like coffee, energy drinks, soft drinks, and black or green tea. It\u2019s also found in energy snacks and some non-prescription drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know that caffeine gives you a boost, and it\u2019s those same energizing properties that can raise blood pressure, even in people with no history of high blood pressure (hypertension). Should you avoid caffeine if you have high blood pressure, or is it safe to consume? Read on to learn more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-caffeine-affect-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does caffeine affect blood pressure?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine is a stimulant that causes a short-term increase in blood pressure. \u201cIt can cause your heart rate and the force of your blood flow to increase temporarily,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/flora-sadri-azarbayejani-42023345\/\">Flora Sadri-Azarbayejani<\/a>, DO, MPH, the medical director at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psyclarity Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and former family physician. This increase in blood flow may lead to an immediate elevation in blood pressure, which usually lasts a few hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe impacts on blood pressure are real,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepline.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Kelvas, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the chief medical adviser at<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhen I worked in the ER, I had several cases of teenagers who came in with arrhythmias [also known as irregular heartbeat] from too many energy drinks.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How each individual responds to caffeine is unique. Someone who drinks one cup of coffee daily has likely built a tolerance to it, where their body has become used to it and more caffeine is needed to feel an effect. If you\u2019ve developed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30673725\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caffeine tolerance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s likely you won\u2019t notice any difference in blood pressure. On the other hand, a person who consumes caffeine infrequently or has a sensitivity to it might feel more side effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-does-caffeine-raise-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does caffeine raise blood pressure?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine works quickly and can cause a temporary spike in blood pressure levels as soon as 30 minutes after consumption. The elevation typically lasts between one to four hours, says Dr. Sadri-Azarbayejani. The effects of caffeine can last longer depending on how much and what type was consumed. For instance, a 10-ounce cup of regular coffee is digested more quickly than a caffeine pill, which can have effects for three to seven hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone\u2019s response to caffeine is different, but for those prone to high blood pressure, or chronic hypertension, caffeine\u2019s effects may be more serious and longer-lasting. This is particularly true if someone is drinking more than the recommended daily amount, says Dr. Sadri-Azarbayejani, as it increases the risk of arrhythmia and increases blood pressure for a longer period during the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning that it narrows blood vessels. This makes it more difficult for the heart to pump blood through them. When you consume caffeine throughout the day, it can increase your blood pressure chronically, because your heart is working harder to get blood through the constricted vessels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with hypertension should be cautious when consuming caffeine and should reduce their caffeine intake to 400 mg or less to prevent long-term blood pressure elevation. And if you notice that you experience signs of elevated blood pressure after caffeine consumption, let your healthcare provider know; you might have an increased sensitivity to caffeine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-people-with-high-blood-pressure-drink-coffee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can people with high blood pressure drink coffee?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, a cup of coffee is fine and won\u2019t have any long-lasting impacts on blood pressure. The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/nutrition-physical-activity\/dietary-guidelines\/previous-dietary-guidelines\/2015\/advisory-report\/appendix-e-2\/appendix-e-240\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends no more than 400 mg of caffeine daily for healthy adults, which is about four 10-ounce cups of coffee. If you have hypertension, it\u2019s likely that you can enjoy a cup of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19183744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee safely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it\u2019s important to seek medical advice from your healthcare team first; their recommendation will likely depend on how serious your hypertension is and how much coffee you\u2019ve been drinking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have caffeine, like a cup of coffee, it might be best in the morning, when you naturally have lower blood pressure after being at rest overnight. It tends to be the highest midday after moving and running around, says Dr. Kelvas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf your blood pressure is wildly out of control, or above 140\/90 mmHg, avoid caffeine,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kelvas says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Normal blood pressure is less than 120\/80 mmHg, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bloodpressure\/about.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving chronically high blood pressure increases your risk of heart attack and stroke, which largely outweighs the benefits of consuming caffeine,\u201d Dr. Kelvas says. \u201cIt&#8217;s always a risk versus benefit analysis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other factors can play a role in whether you should cut back on caffeine or eliminate it entirely, including whether or not you have other cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Kelvas recommends that patients on anti-arrhythmia medication steer clear of caffeine. Blood pressure medication like beta blockers can be affected by caffeine, so check with your provider, she says. If your high blood pressure is not too severe, a cup of coffee (with no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day) is likely safe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-causes\"><b>What causes hypertension?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-coffee-have-heart-health-benefits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does coffee have heart health benefits?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure can be a risk factor for health events like heart attacks and strokes, and often doesn\u2019t have visible symptoms. But if you\u2019re a coffee connoisseur and your blood pressure is under control, good news: Coffee consumption can be good for your heart. This is important because, over time,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/health-threats-from-high-blood-pressure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">untreated hypertension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can narrow your arteries, leading to heart attacks and strokes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29276945\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that, in healthy people, drinking three to five cups of coffee (remember to keep it under 400 mg of caffeine a day) reduced the risk of heart disease by 15%. And one large<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0273230017302210\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that having moderate amounts of coffee didn\u2019t have a negative long-term effect on cardiovascular health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHowever, these benefits are best enjoyed when caffeine is consumed in moderation, as any excessive intake [over the recommended 400 mg daily] can lead to long-term elevations in blood pressure,\u201d says Dr. Sadri-Azarbayejani. So, coffee drinkers should enjoy a standard cup of coffee or two but skip the supersize lattes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-lower-your-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to lower your blood pressure\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have chronic hypertension, reducing or eliminating caffeine can help, but that\u2019s only one piece of the puzzle. There are other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ways-to-manage-high-blood-pressure-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lifestyle changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you can make to keep your blood pressure in check if it\u2019s high or reduce your risk of hypertension if it\u2019s not.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Quit smoking.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Interestingly, there is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/01.HYP.37.2.187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no conclusive evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that smokers have higher blood pressure than non-smokers. But we do know that nicotine temporarily<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9162447\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raises blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is an independent risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8534426\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also found that quitting smoking significantly reduced blood pressure in a group of people with hypertension. It\u2019s also one of the best things you can do for your health.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Add exercise to your routine. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRegular physical activity helps bring down blood pressure by about 5 to 8 mmHg by making your heart stronger and more efficient at pumping blood,\u201d Dr. Sadri-Azarbayejani says. The stronger your heart is, the more blood it can pump with less effort, which reduces the pressure in your arteries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduce sodium intake. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cutting back on salt and foods with lots of sodium, like processed and packaged foods, can help lower your blood pressure. Reducing high-sodium foods means your body won\u2019t hold on to as much water and will bring down blood pressure readings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Work with your provider on a weight loss plan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re obese or overweight (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/obesity-overweight.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 73%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the U.S. population is), losing weight can help lower your blood pressure. Being overweight or obese also puts you at risk for other cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities such as Type 2 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Try the DASH diet. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adjusting how you eat is a great way to manage hypertension and is an important factor in weight loss. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-blood-pressure-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DASH diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, can help with high blood pressure and reduce the risk of other chronic diseases.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Limit alcohol. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8130994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one drink<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> likely won\u2019t raise your blood pressure, binge drinking will increase it temporarily. In women, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/binge-drinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">binge drinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is four or more drinks in one session; for men, it\u2019s five or more. And if you drink often, you\u2019re at a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8130994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing chronic high blood pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Check for other causes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re seeing your healthcare professional about high blood pressure, don\u2019t forget to mention anything else that\u2019s going on, either physically or mentally. \u201cSometimes high blood pressure is a symptom of another problem,\u201d says Dr. Kelvas. For example, someone with chronic pain will have higher-than-normal blood pressure or they may be dealing with anxiety. High blood pressure can also be indicative of kidney or thyroid disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important for high blood pressure to be diagnosed. You can check your blood pressure at home or at the pharmacy. If it is over 140\/90, you should see your healthcare provider for treatment. Take high blood pressure seriously because it can cause cardiovascular diseases.
