Because mucus filters harmful particles from your nose, your body increases mucus production in an effort to remove the cause of inflammation. This could be from a variety of causes, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A virus like a cold, influenza, or COVID-19<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sinus infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental irritants<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But mucus isn\u2019t the only thing your body\u2019s immune system produces when your nose becomes inflamed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen your body senses the inflammation, it triggers the release of histamine, a chemical that causes the lining of your nasal passages to swell further, making it harder to breathe through your nose,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturesrise.com\/pages\/sony-sherpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony Sherpa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a holistic physician at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturesrise.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature&#8217;s Rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an organic wellness company. \u201cThis reflex is an evolutionary adaptation that helps protect the nasal cavity from foreign particles and irritants. The result is difficulty breathing through your nose, as well as a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and coughing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience a stuffy nose that started while you felt under the weather with other symptoms like a sore throat, sinus pressure, and a runny nose, it\u2019s likely caused by a virus or infection like the common cold. However, if you otherwise feel well and you always have a stuffy nose, this is more likely from allergies or environmental elements. If you have a stuffy nose in only certain places, like in your house or at work, the cause is likely environmental.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8-ways-to-get-rid-of-a-stuffy-nose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 ways to get rid of a stuffy nose<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter the reason you\u2019re dealing with a stuffy nose, it can get old quickly. For some relief, try these eight ways to get rid of a stuffy nose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-add-moisture-to-the-dry-air\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Add moisture to the dry air<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201dOne of the most effective treatments is to use a humidifier or vaporizer to add moisture to the air; this helps thin mucus in your nasal passages, making it easier to breathe,\u201d Dr. Sherpa says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some humidifiers also work as essential oil diffusers, and many find that peppermint and eucalyptus oils naturally decrease congestion.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t own a humidifier, a steamy hot shower may provide some temporary relief. Or you can boil some water, and afterward while the hot water cools, put your head above the steam to breathe in the moisturizing mist. Clean the humidifier per the owner\u2019s manual or you may spew mold into your air.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-apply-warm-compress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Apply warm compress<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to adding moisture to the air, a warm compress is a common and natural way to relieve nasal congestion. Soak a small washcloth with warm water (be sure you can comfortably touch it), wring it out, lie down, and place it over your nose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathe through your nose and take in warm moisture from the damp towel to break up mucus build up. This is an excellent solution if you\u2019re trying to sleep. When you\u2019re done, just throw the towel on your nightstand and stay cozy in bed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-try-a-saline-nasal-spray\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Try a saline nasal spray<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would recommend a nasal spray that has saline in it,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acls-pals-bls.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brian Clark<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered nurse and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acls-pals-bls.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Medical Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cNasal sprays help to reduce the inflammation in your nose, clearing up your breathing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saline spray quickly clears a stuffy nose. Often, you can unblock your stuffy nose in three minutes or less. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/deep-sea-nasal-spray\/what-is\">Saline nasal sprays<\/a>, made with gentle ingredients, are available in generic brands, readily available at major drugstores, and are inexpensive. These are not to be confused with nasal sprays like Afrin, which use more powerful ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-drink-clear-fluids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Neti pots are available in two forms: one looks like a teapot that you use to pour saline into your nostrils and the other is a squeeze bottle with a lid that fits into your nostril and you squeeze saline up your nostril. These aid in nasal irrigation and help some people find relief more effectively than a swim or nasal spray.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-look-into-air-purifiers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Look into air purifiers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you believe your stuffy nose is from environmental irritants or allergens, an air purifier in your room could provide some relief. There is limited research on if air purifiers can help stuffy noses, but it has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32233173\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helped children with asthma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in some studies.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opt for a machine with a HEPA filter, which traps dust, pollen, and certain mold spores. Change the filters as recommended by the owner\u2019s manual.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-speak-to-a-pharmacist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Speak to a pharmacist<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When natural remedies don\u2019t cut it, you can always try an over-the-counter medication like a nasal decongestant, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-12-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mucinex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
