Although we usually think of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-blood-pressure-during-pregnancy\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a complication of pregnancy, low blood pressure during pregnancy is quite common as well\u2014especially in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/the-facts-about-high-blood-pressure\/low-blood-pressure-when-blood-pressure-is-too-low\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first 24 weeks of pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thankfully, experiencing low blood pressure while pregnant usually doesn\u2019t cause severe complications and can be treated with at-home remedies. Here\u2019s what to know about low blood pressure and pregnancy, including causes, typical symptoms, and preventive strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-low-blood-pressure-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes low blood pressure during pregnancy?<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure (hypotension) in pregnancy is common, especially in the first two trimesters, says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/obstetrics-and-gynecology\/dr-mitchell-scott-kramer-md-11312030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitchell S. Kramer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Huntington Hospital in New York. \u201cThis is partly due to increased blood flow to the fetus as well as dilation of blood vessels, which occurs in pregnancy from pregnancy hormones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/internal-medicine\/dr-adi-davidov-md-11364427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adi Davidov, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, associate chair of OB-GYN at Staten Island University Hospital in New York elaborates: \u201cThis phenomenon is poorly understood, but it is thought to be due to progesterone-mediated relaxation of the muscles that surround the blood vessels.\u201d Other possible contributing factors to low blood pressure in pregnancy include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anemia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood loss, such as from an accident<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/ectopic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ectopic pregnancies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when the egg implants outside the uterus; low blood pressure is a possible symptom of this serious and life-threatening condition<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"normal-blood-pressure-for-pregnant-women\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal blood pressure for pregnant women<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-pressure-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure is measured<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using two numbers. Systolic blood pressure (top number) measures how much force your blood is exerting against your blood vessels as your heart beats. Diastolic blood pressure (bottom number) measures how much force your blood is exerting against your blood vessels during the pauses between heartbeats. Normal blood pressure during pregnancy is the same as in non-pregnant people\u2014when systolic blood pressure is lower than 120, and diastolic blood pressure is lower than 80 (or 120\/80 mmHg), according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/understanding-blood-pressure-readings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re considered to have low blood pressure when your readings dip below 80\/50. If your blood pressure gets to this level, you may also notice symptoms, such as faintness or lightheadedness, Dr. Davidov says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms-of-low-blood-pressure-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of low blood pressure during pregnancy<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typical signs of low blood pressure in pregnancy<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/low-blood-pressure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may include:<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or faint<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling clammy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sense of dread or something is wrong<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling overheated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiencing headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiencing blurred vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling nauseous<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a racing heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are more likely to notice these symptoms when you stand up from sitting down or when you\u2019ve just showered. \u201cSometimes pregnant women in the first or early second trimester feel faint or dizzy when they shower,\u201d explains Lindemann. \u201cIt\u2019s a combination of low blood sugar, motion sickness, and low blood pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although these symptoms are typical low blood pressure symptoms, you should report any signs of low blood pressure to your family physician, obstetrician or midwife. While low blood pressure during pregnancy is considered normal, some of the symptoms of low blood pressure, such as headache and blurry vision, resemble symptoms of other, more serious conditions like<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17952-preeclampsia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preeclampsia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your blood pressure will be monitored closely during all prenatal checkups using a blood pressure monitor. If there are signs that your blood pressure is deviating from normal, and is either too high or dangerously low, your healthcare provider may ask you to check your blood pressure even more frequently, such as with at-home blood pressure readings.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-pregnancy-complications-can-low-blood-pressure-cause\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What pregnancy complications can low blood pressure cause?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure rarely causes complications for pregnant people or their babies\u2014and only if blood pressure is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extremely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> low, says Dr. Kramer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lindemannmd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alan Lindemann,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, OB-GYN, and maternal mortality expert, agrees, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy hormones cause the vascular system to enlarge in preparation for more blood volume, which is necessary for a healthy pregnancy.\u201d Rather, gestational hypertension is more concerning. \u201cAlthough low blood pressure might be annoying, it is high blood pressure that can cause injury or death,\u201d says Dr. Lindemann.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, low blood pressure may very rarely cause serious pregnancy complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"premature-birth-or-stillbirth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premature birth or stillbirth<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are very few studies about how low blood pressure affects babies during pregnancy. However, there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/jch.14494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that, in extreme cases, low blood pressure may pose risks to babies. For example,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3428686\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study from 2012<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that low blood pressure during pregnancy may increase the risk of stillbirth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"falling-and-accidents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falling and accidents<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lindemann says that one of the greatest risks of low blood pressure during pregnancy is the increased risk of falling and injuring yourself or your fetus. That\u2019s because some of the main symptoms of low blood pressure include feeling dizzy, lightheaded, and off-balance, which can increase the risk of fainting or falling. This risk increases if you stand up suddenly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"increased-morning-sickness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased morning sickness\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the symptoms of low blood pressure mirror the symptoms of morning sickness, such as feeling faint and dizzy. Interestingly,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/hr2010172\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an older study from 2010<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people with hypotension are at higher risk of developing severe morning sickness during early pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"shock\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shock<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who experiences extremely low blood pressure is at risk of going into shock. During shock, your blood and organs aren\u2019t getting enough oxygen, which could put both you and the fetus in danger. Signs of shock include clammy skin, rapid breathing, and skin turning bluish. Here is what experts recommend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"treat-the-underlying-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treat the underlying conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although low blood pressure in pregnancy is usually caused by hormonal and vascular changes that are normal for pregnancy, occasionally, an underlying medical condition causes low blood pressure. The most common condition is anemia, which affects<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4375689\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than half of pregnant people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most physicians will take your blood during pregnancy to check for anemia. If you have anemia, iron supplements are usually recommended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ask-your-provider-about-your-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your provider about your medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications you are taking may lower blood pressure. For example, medication for high blood pressure may cause your blood pressure to dip too low during the first two trimesters of pregnancy, says Dr. Davidov. Make sure you share any medications you are taking with your prenatal care team in case adjustments need to be made.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing exercises that raise your heart rate for 30-60 minutes a day helps increase your overall heart health. It can also help to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-after-exercise\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boost your blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if it\u2019s too low. It also improves circulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"increase-fluid-intake\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increase fluid intake<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being dehydrated can lower your blood pressure. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure can be minimized by drinking the recommended 2-3 liters of fluid a day,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Davidov says<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you have trouble drinking enough plain water, you can supplement it with decaffeinated tea, electrolyte drinks such as Pedialyte, or seltzer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"stand-up-slowly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand up slowly<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low blood pressure in pregnancy can make you feel lightheaded when you stand up, says Dr. Kramer. For this reason, he recommends taking your time as you stand up from lying down or sitting. You should also drink a glass of water before getting out of bed in the morning. When possible, avoid standing for long periods of time. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compression stockings can also help by preventing blood from pooling in the feet and increasing blood return to the heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"eat-a-meal-before-showering\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat a meal before showering<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many pregnant people feel dizzy after showering, especially if they haven\u2019t eaten recently. \u201cThe development of low blood pressure during pregnancy sometimes has annoying manifestations, including feeling faint in the shower,\u201d Dr. Lindemann says. \u201cFor that reason, I recommend eating a complete breakfast and letting it digest for 20 or 30 minutes before the shower.\u201d If you feel dizzy or weak when you get out of the shower, do so slowly, and sit down for a bit after you\u2019ve exited the shower. Also, be sure not to skip meals\u2014even if you are feeling queasy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"add-extra-salt-to-your-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add extra salt to your diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain dietary tweaks may help low blood pressure during pregnancy. Try maintaining a healthy diet consisting of small, frequent meals and staying well-hydrated. Sometimes adding a little extra salt to your diet can help low blood pressure, but you shouldn\u2019t go overboard. You can pack salty snacks like pretzels, popcorns, sunflower seeds, and salted nuts in your bag to have available in the event that you feel dizzy or lightheaded.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-treat-low-blood-pressure-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to treat low blood pressure during pregnancy<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost pregnant women with low blood pressure do not need treatment, especially if they are asymptomatic,\u201d Dr. Davidov says. \u201cFor patients who are symptomatic, it is recommended that they increase their fluid intake.\u201d If you have serious symptoms, you should have a thorough examination by a healthcare provider to rule out other causes of low blood pressure, not related to pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the rare case that low blood pressure during pregnancy requires treatment, the following would be considered, according to Dr. Davidov:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intravenous fluids (IV)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that raise blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several different types of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-blood-pressure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications used to raise blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fludrocortisone-acetate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fludrocortisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (contraindicated in the first trimester) and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/midodrine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">midodrine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (adverse events observed in animal reproduection studies). However, many of the medications used to address low blood pressure<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/taking-medicine-while-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aren\u2019t completely safe for pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and may include risks to the fetus. However, sometimes the risk is justified if the life of the expectant mom or fetus is in danger. These medications should only be prescribed and closely monitored by your prenatal care provider.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, however, low blood pressure is just a fact of life when you are pregnant and isn\u2019t something you need to worry about. In fact, it\u2019s a normal part of gestation. While the symptoms of low blood pressure can be uncomfortable, most people find that taking it slow when they stand up, eating regular meals, and increasing fluid intake work wonders.
