A spider angioma is a small red or purple mark on the skin caused by dilated blood vessels near the skin&#8217;s surface. Spider angiomas get their name from the appearance they create on your skin, which looks like a red spider&rsquo;s body and legs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-spider-angioma\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is spider angioma?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/home\/quick-facts-skin-disorders\/noncancerous-skin-growths\/spider-angiomas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spider angioma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appears as a small, red lesion or dot on the skin, surrounded by thin red lines. Spider angiomas resemble a red spider, thus, their name. The good news (especially for those who do not like spiders and bugs!) is that spiders do not cause spider angiomas&mdash;there are no spiders in or on your body. A spider angioma is simply called a spider angioma because the mark on your skin resembles a red spider.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spider angioma is caused by tiny blood vessels called capillaries near the skin that dilate (widen). Unlike many skin conditions, spider angiomas do not cause itching or irritation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may hear a spider angioma called:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider naevus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider nevi<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevus araneus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider naevi<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider telangiectasia<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-spider-angiomas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes spider angiomas?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angiomas are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/23200-spider-angioma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are thought to affect about 38% of healthy children at some point in their childhood and almost 60% of pregnant women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angiomas may appear on the skin&rsquo;s surface when blood vessels dilate or widen. This happens when muscles restrict blood flow in the arteriole, a small tube that branches off the arteries (a major blood vessel) and leads to capillaries (small, thin blood vessels).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angiomas can affect anyone, including healthy adults and young children, but are more common in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with certain conditions, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hepatitis-c-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hepatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (inflammation of the liver) or liver cirrhosis (chronic liver damage which leads to scarring and liver failure, often caused by hepatitis or excess alcohol consumption)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rheumatoid-arthritis-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatoid arthritis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-during-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals who are assigned female at birth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals who take an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-interfere-with-birth-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral contraceptive pill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (birth control pill)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are malnourished<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"spider-angioma-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angioma symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although spider angiomas can appear anywhere on the skin, they are most common on the arms, fingers, face, legs, neck, and upper chest or trunk. They are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/conditions-diseases\/spider-angiomas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most noticeable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of spider angiomas include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A flat (or slightly raised) red or purple dot on the skin that may resemble a pimple<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dot has red or purple lines extending from the center that resemble spider legs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dot is less than &frac14; of an inch in diameter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire mark (dot and lines) disappears with the application of pressure on the central red spot and reappears when you remove your finger&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angiomas do not cause pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angiomas may bleed a little bit if injured<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"spider-angioma-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angioma treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the spider angioma is due to an underlying condition, the healthcare professional will recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK507818\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treating the cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when possible.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actual spider angioma, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-conditions\/spider-angioma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not require treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in most cases. Some healthcare providers will perform fine-needle electrocautery (burning) or laser therapy to the site if treatment is desired or needed. These treatments are often successful but may be associated with scarring&mdash;and the spider angiomas may return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider angiomas may disappear:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In children after puberty<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In pregnant women after giving birth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In women who take birth control pills after they stop taking the medicine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In patients with cirrhosis after they have a liver transplant&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In adults, if untreated, spider angiomas tend to stay. Consult your healthcare professional for more information and questions about treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-spider-angiomas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent spider angiomas<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no known advice on preventing spider angiomas. Results of clinical studies suggest that spider angiomas are related to levels of the hormone estrogen in your body. When estrogen levels increase during puberty and pregnancy, spider angiomas may increase. When estrogen levels are lower, spider angiomas may decrease or even disappear.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts recommend maintaining good care of your health, especially if you have a medical condition such as chronic liver disease or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blog-january-thyroid-awareness-month\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> condition. If spider angiomas are a concern, you can discuss prevention tips with your physician.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diagnosis-and-when-to-see-a-doctor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis and when to see a doctor<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A spider angioma can be clinically diagnosed based on its spider-like appearance. Some people may need a skin biopsy to rule out skin cancer and other conditions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider may order additional tests if you have several spider angiomas or recurring spider angiomas.
