The overall prevalence of ETD in the United States is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaotolaryngology\/fullarticle\/2740679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">around 5%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or nearly 11 million affected adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eustachian tubes have three main functions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re normally filled with air and help equalize pressure between the middle air and the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They help drain fluid and secretions from the middle ear to the throat.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They help prevent bacteria from traveling from the upper throat to the middle ears and causing an infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eustachian tubes have a valve-like structure at the opening in the middle ear, which helps to prevent the backflow of air and fluid into the middle ear. As the muscles in the wall of the eustachian tube contract, they open the valve and allow air to flow into or out of the middle ear, equalizing pressure. If the tube remains open most of the time, air and sound can travel from the back of the upper throat to the ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"obstructive-etd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obstructive ETD\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of ETD occurs when the eustachian tube becomes partially or completely blocked. A blocked eustachian tube can result in negative pressure in the middle ear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"baro-challenge-induced-etd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baro-challenge-induced ETD<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of ETD occurs when the eustachian tube valve doesn\u2019t open properly due to changes in air pressure. People with patulous ETD may also experience the ability to hear echoes of their own voice or breathing, in addition to a feeling of fullness in the ear.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A healthcare provider will diagnose ETD based on an assessment of these symptoms, a complete medical history, and various tools or exams. They may observe the eardrum (tympanic membrane) for changes in response to breathing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-eustachian-tube-dysfunction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes eustachian tube dysfunction?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eustachian tube problems can have various causes.
