If you\u2019re among them, you may have noticed that your regular treatment with over-the-counter medications has become less effective over time. Or maybe you never experienced full relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-do-allergy-medications-stop-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do allergy medications stop working?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many different reasons why your allergy medication isn\u2019t working. Maybe the medication you\u2019re using isn\u2019t appropriate for the true cause of your symptoms. Or, maybe you\u2019ve taken it so frequently that it\u2019s become less effective. Keep reading to learn more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-you-re-taking-the-wrong-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. You\u2019re taking the wrong medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are different allergy medications for different symptoms. For example, eye drops are appropriate for itchy eyes, while steroid nasal sprays or oral decongestants are appropriate for a stuffy nose or sinus pressure. If you\u2019re taking a medication that\u2019s not appropriate for your symptoms, it might not be effective. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/seasonal-allergies-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following types of allergy medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are available:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines (first-generation and second-generation)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal spray corticosteroids<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decongestants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal spray decongestants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inhalers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye drops<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leukotriene modifiers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immunotherapy tablets<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each is indicated for different symptoms. It\u2019s important to work with your healthcare provider or pharmacist to determine the best treatment plan for your specific allergy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button sc-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/allergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allergy Medicine Coupons &amp; Resources<\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-you-don-t-have-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. You don\u2019t have allergies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of environmental\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergies-vs-sinus-infection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allergies<\/a> can be similar to non-allergic rhinitis, such as a runny nose, sneezing, and coughing.\u00a0\u201cThere are times that other conditions can mimic allergy symptoms, but the treatment may be completely different,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohsu.edu\/providers\/shyam-joshi-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shyam Joshi, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist and assistant professor of medicine at Oregon Health and Science University and chief medical officer at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nectarlifesciences.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nectar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOther causes of congestion include anatomical or structural abnormalities, heartburn or reflux, exposure to environmental irritants such as smoke, and chronic sinus disease,\u201d says Dr. Joshi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These irritants cause your body to react with congestion or allergy-like symptoms. However, unlike allergies, they do not trigger the release of histamine. Meaning, an antihistamine medication will not work.\u00a0<\/span>When you have environmental allergies, your body\u00a0<em>does<\/em>\u00a0produce histamine, and that is why medications such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy-extra-str\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Benadryl (diphenhydramine)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zyrtec (cetirizine)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allegra (fexofenadine)<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claritin (loratadine)<\/a> are effective.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-it-s-peak-allergy-season\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. It\u2019s peak allergy season<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on what type of allergen causes your symptoms, the changing seasons could cause your allergy symptoms to worsen. \u201cThe more common reason their symptoms are flaring is due to more exposure to their allergens or peak allergy season,\u201d says Dr. Joshi. Additionally, the warmer weather that coincides with spring and summer pollen can exacerbate symptoms. Basically, it seems like your medication is ineffective when it\u2019s really just that you\u2019re having a more severe reaction than usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-you-re-skipping-medication-doses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. You\u2019re skipping medication doses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, people think that allergy medication is similar to pain-relieving medication\u2014once the pain is gone, you no longer have to take the medication. But this is not the case with allergy relief. If you stop taking the medication once you feel better, your symptoms will come back as long as environmental allergens like pollen are still present. In other words, you may not be taking your allergy medicine consistently enough for it to be effective. The nasal steroids (fluticasone) particularly require consistent use to be effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-your-allergies-are-changing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Your allergies are changing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you age, your body changes\u2014including your hormones and immune system function. Over time, you can develop <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adult-onset-allergies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Or, in some cases, your seasonal allergies may be worse year over year due to climate change or other environmental factors. That can make your current allergy medication ineffective. You may experience more stress as well. These factors can cause you to be more susceptible to environmental allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-your-symptoms-are-a-medication-side-effect\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Your symptoms are a medication side effect<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain allergy treatments are only intended for short-term use, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-12-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nasal spray. When you use it for longer than intended, you can experience side effects such as rebound congestion. Basically, your stuffy nose comes back as soon as you stop using it and is a medication side effect rather than an allergic reaction. Some other medications can cause allergy-like symptoms, such as anti-hypertension medications (ACE inhibitors), which can cause a chronic cough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rebound-congestion-nasal-spray-addiction\/\"><b>If you have nasal spray addiction, it\u2019s time to put down the Afrin<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-you-have-a-medication-tolerance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. You have a medication tolerance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have taken your allergy medicine for a long period of time, you may find that the medication is no longer helping relieve your symptoms.\u201cAntihistamines may stop working after a while if the body develops a tolerance to the medication,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drlaurapurdy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Purdy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, board-certified family medicine physician based in Nashville, Tennessee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this is most common with antihistamines, it\u2019s also possible with a nasal spray. \u201cThere may be select individuals in whom the effectiveness of antihistamines and nasal sprays may decrease over time, but this is rare,\u201d says Dr. Joshi. \u201cThis phenomenon, called \u2018tachyphylaxis,\u2019 can occur due to the body developing other strategies to bypass the effects of the medication and lead to uninhibited inflammation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our allergies newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Allergies Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-when-your-allergy-medicine-doesn-t-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do when your allergy medicine doesn\u2019t work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf your allergy medications do not seem to work, it is time to see an allergist,\u201d says Dr. Joshi. This type of specialist may recommend the following strategies to help:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Trying a new treatment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an over-the-counter treatment isn\u2019t working, your provider might recommend moving on to prescription strength. Or, simply switching the medication within the same class of treatment could help, for example, trying Zyrtec instead of Allegra. \u201cIf antihistamines do not work for allergies, there are other types of medications that may be effective, such as decongestants, corticosteroids, and leukotriene modifiers,\u201d says Dr. Purdy. Also, some non-medication treatments, such as nasal saline rinses or neti pots, can be effective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Using a higher dosage of current medication: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your provider may recommend this during peak allergy season, or if you\u2019ve been taking allergy medication too inconsistently to relieve symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Combining multiple medications:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can \u201cdouble up\u201d on certain types of allergy medications\u2014such as antihistamines and nasal sprays. \u201cIntranasal steroid sprays like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-sensimist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are very effective in managing sneezing, an itchy nose, and congestion. On the other hand, antihistamine tablets are more helpful for rashes associated with direct contact with pets and itchy or watery eyes. Taking both can be helpful for some patients who may suffer from multiple symptoms,\u201d says Dr. Joshi. However, some combinations are unsafe, so always talk to your provider first.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Taking a drug holiday:\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a planned break from your medication that could help reduce tolerance to a particular treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Evaluating other conditions that could cause symptoms: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If no allergy medications are providing relief, it may be time to determine if another condition or medication is causing look-alike symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Repeating allergy testing: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you had allergy testing in the past, you might have developed new allergies since the testing was completed.\u00a0 so repeat testing may be necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Starting immunotherapy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve tried all of the available allergy medications and still aren\u2019t experiencing relief from your symptoms or are having symptoms year-round, your allergist may recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-shots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy shots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also known as immunotherapy, this treatment gives small doses of an allergen over time to eventually cure your reaction to the trigger in a period of three to five years.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Making lifestyle changes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other nonmedical treatments that can help relieve allergy symptoms. Some ideas your provider may recommend are avoiding triggers when possible, making environmental changes (such as adding air filters to your home), and trying natural remedies like nasal saline rinses or steam inhalation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People living with allergies know that symptoms are difficult to deal with and affect their daily functioning. If allergy symptoms are not relieved by medication, don\u2019t give up hope. Working with an allergist or an immunologist can help you find relief and may help you avoid unwanted side effects such as drowsiness or sedation. \u201cYour doctor can help you determine the best course of treatment for your specific symptoms and medical history,\u201d says Dr. Purdy.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Environmental allergies, to irritants such as dander and dust mites, are common.
