Here are just a few ways garlic can improve your overall health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-improved-heart-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Still, one small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9638143\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that garlic extract may help reduce BMI when taken twice daily as a supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-stronger-immune-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Stronger <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune system<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interested in another one of garlic\u2019s many superpowers? It can boost your immune function thanks to its antiviral <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">properties<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/danielle-kelvas-md-488936186\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Kelvas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a medical adviser for Speediance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pointing to a study that found a 63% reduction in the number of infections with the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common cold<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people taking a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garlic supplement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Kelvas explains that the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfur compound<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allicin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is thought to stimulate white blood cells to help fight off infections and viruses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-bolstered-antimicrobial-and-antifungal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Bolstered <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antimicrobial<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antifungal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garlic is known to have both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antimicrobial<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antifungal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> properties, which means it may help fight certain types of infections and bacteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Kovalenko, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allicin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be particularly beneficial for women because it may help prevent yeast infections and urinary tract infections (UTIs).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/6-surprising-ways-garlic-boosts-your-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use garlic to relieve symptoms of athlete\u2019s foot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thanks to its fungus-fighting compounds, and it may work as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-toenail-fungus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural remedy for toenail fungus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the same way.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garlic\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibacterial properties<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can clear up the skin, says Dr. Michael, by killing acne-causing bacteria. But garlic may also have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4211483\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-aging benefits for the skin, too, and can help improve psoriasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (along with other treatments).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"6-improved-inflammation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Lower cancer risk<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consuming garlic has been associated with a lower risk of certain types of cancer\u2014particularly stomach cancer and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colon cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Kelvas points out. Dr. Michael says some warning signs that garlic is irritating to your gut include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heartburn-how-to-treat-nausea-and-stomachaches\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, burning in your mouth or throat, nausea, vomiting, gas, or diarrhea (especially when eating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raw garlic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, always ask your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider about consuming garlic for its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential health benefits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you are taking any blood-thinning medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Dr. Michael says large amounts of garlic can increase your risk of bleeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-what-does-garlic-do-for-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: What does garlic do for the body?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless you can\u2019t tolerate it or it interacts with one of your medications, garlic is a powerful little bulb vegetable.
