Because there is some overlap in the conditions these two types of healthcare providers treat, deciding which one to visit can be confusing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While allergists are trained in allergy diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, ENTs are trained to treat medical issues occurring in the head, throat, ear, nose, and neck\u2014and may or may not have experience with allergies. Here\u2019s how to determine if you should see an ENT or allergist and what to expect from your appointment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-s-the-difference-between-an-allergist-and-an-ent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the difference between an allergist and an ENT?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you\u2019re wondering, should I see an ENT or allergist? While there are a few similarities between allergists and ENTs\u2014for example, both types of medical professionals diagnose and treat allergies\u2014there are a few important differences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe you have symptoms that could be allergies, like sneezing, runny nose, congestion, and watery eyes. Should you see an allergist first, or should you go with an ENT? \u201cIt is not wrong to start at either place,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.comhs.org\/find-a-doctor\/h\/husain-inna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inna Husain, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified otolaryngologist at Community Healthcare System in Indiana<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/24635-otolaryngologist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>ENT<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a surgical sub-specialist who treats chronic medical conditions of the head, neck, ears, nose, and throat ranging from mild (like asthma and ear infections) to severe (such as head and neck cancer). ENTs perform surgical procedures, allergists do not. ENTs are better suited to identify and treat anatomical issues\u2014such as nasal polyps or septal deviation\u2014that could be causing your symptoms, says Dr. Husain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/24053-allergist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>allergist<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or immunologist, is a specialist who is trained to diagnose and manage asthma, allergies, and other problems with the immune system. If your symptoms are consistent with seasonal allergies, food allergies, recurrent hives or swelling (even in the mouth),<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0it\u2019s a good idea to start with an allergist, Dr. Husain says. That\u2019s because they\u2019re specifically trained to manage such immune system reactions. You might see an ENT if you have chronic issues with these structures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entnet.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology\u2013Head and Neck Surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ENTs diagnose and treat conditions such as sinusitis, hearing loss, chronic ear disease, allergies, swallowing disorders, hoarseness, snoring, sleep apnea, nosebleeds, dizziness, and head and neck tumors. They are also able to perform surgeries of the head and neck. An ENT might also perform the following <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tests<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hearing-tests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearing tests<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/24222-tympanometry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Tympanometry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tests for pressure changes in the ear to determine how well your eardrum moves. It helps diagnose hearing loss related to the middle ear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/pure-tone-audiometry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Pure tone audiometry<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses a series of tones and vibrations to test how well you can hear.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK564321\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Evoked potential (EP), or auditory brainstem response<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helps diagnose hearing loss through the use of electrodes to record the brain\u2019s response to sound.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"throat-and-voice-tests\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throat and voice tests<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.otolaryngology.pitt.edu\/centers-excellence\/swallowing-disorders-center\/diagnosing-swallowing-disorders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Barium swallow tests<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are performed when patients have dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, to help determine what is causing the issue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Biopsy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involves taking a small sample of cells or tissue from the mouth, nose, larynx, throat, or other areas of the head and neck to determine whether an abnormal mass or growth is benign or cancerous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007507.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Laryngoscopy<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a test that examines the back of your throat and voice box using a scope to diagnose conditions in these areas. Their<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/24053-allergist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specialty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to identify and treat asthma, allergies and allergic disorders, and primary immunodeficiency disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Siddiqi, allergists commonly treat allergic rhinitis, allergic sinusitis, allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, seasonal allergies, hay fever, food allergies and intolerances, drug allergies, and intolerances, immunodeficiencies, and recurrent infections. They provide medicine-based treatment options as well as immunotherapy and biologic medications (which target the immune system), she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An allergist can conduct several types of allergy tests, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/21495-allergy-testing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Skin prick test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A thin needle is used to prick the skin on the forearm or back; each prick contains a different allergen (of which there can be 10-50). A reaction to triggers typically occurs within 15 minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Intradermal test:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Small amounts of an allergen are injected into the outer layer of the skin, or epidermis to see if a reaction occurs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Patch test:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An allergen is placed directly on the skin and covered with a bandage for 48-96 hours, after which a provider will check for a skin reaction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blood (IgE) test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A blood sample is sent to a lab to measure levels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/allergy,-asthma-immunology-glossary\/immunoglobulin-e-(ige)-defined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IgE antibodies,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which are produced by the immune system in response to allergens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Challenge test: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performed under an allergist\u2019s close supervision due to the risk of anaphylaxis, small amounts of suspected food or drug allergens are swallowed by the patient.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tests identify triggers including environmental allergens including mites, pets, pollen, mold, or food allergens, medications, and other chemicals found in personal care products, and adhesives and metals, says Dr. Siddiqi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-shots\/\"><b>Do allergy shots work?<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-testing-for-kids\/\"><b>Allergy testing for kids<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-expect-from-your-ent-or-allergist-appointment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to expect from your ENT or allergist appointment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your appointment is with an ENT, and you\u2019re coming in with complaints related to the nose, your full exam may include a nasal endoscopy; if your issue is throat related, a laryngoscopy may be performed, says Dr. Husain, adding that imaging tests of the sinuses or throat may also be ordered. For issues related to the ear, hearing tests will likely be done, she says. And if allergies are suspected, you may undergo skin or blood tests\u2014or receive a referral to an allergist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At an allergist appointment, expect a thorough medical interview followed by a focused physical examination, says Dr. Siddiqi. If appropriate, allergy testing will be performed, and your provider will discuss an individualized treatment plan that includes various modalities such as immunotherapy or biologic agents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Husain, your provider may ask the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long have your symptoms been present?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do your symptoms come and go or are they progressive?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there associated pain or bleeding?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you experiencing any facial weakness\/numbness?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is your sense of smell?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have any history of nasal or head and neck surgery?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have any history of smoking or vaping history (including marijuana)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients may consider asking their provider:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you see on my exam?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you think is causing my symptoms?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this condition chronic or self-resolving?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are all my treatment options?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What will happen if I decide against treatment?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergists and ENTs work closely together to provide patients with the best care and outcomes for their condition, says Dr. Siddiqi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"cost-of-an-ent-or-allergist-visit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cost of an ENT or allergist visit<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost of your visit depends on your specific insurance coverage and location.
