Talk to your healthcare provider if you are concerned about a medication causing vitamin D deficiency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"ways-to-increase-vitamin-d-levels\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ways to increase vitamin D levels<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are three ways to make sure you\u2019re getting enough vitamin D: sunlight, diet, and supplements. None of these raise vitamin D levels immediately, so talk to a healthcare provider if you are concerned about a suspected or ongoing deficiency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is possible to increase D levels with diet alone,&#8221; Dr. Warner says. However, our experts warn that this would require consuming a lot of fish liver oils and fatty fish like sardines and mackerel. The following foods are high in vitamin D:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freshwater rainbow trout<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salmon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canned light tuna<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortified orange juice or milk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mushrooms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egg yolks and beef liver are also good sources of vitamin D. The trouble is that raising levels through these foods alone could lead to large, monotonous portions of animal products\u2014good for vitamin D levels but not great for a balanced diet and overall health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, Wiemann says it&#8217;s important to remember that vitamin D is fat-soluble which is why many dairy products are fortified with vitamin D. &#8220;These foods are best consumed with a healthy fat source in order to help absorption in the digestive system,&#8221; she explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-sun-exposure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Sun exposure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposing skin to UV light from the sun can boost vitamin D. That\u2019s why it is often called the \u201csunshine vitamin.\u201d However, it can be difficult to get enough time in the sun while protecting skin from harmful UV rays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Lighter pigmented skin requires 20-30 minutes daily; darker pigmented skin requires up to 60 minutes daily,&#8221; Dr. Warner says. However, chronic sunscreen use can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19663879\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lower vitamin D absorption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by up to 90%. Strike a balance by spending just five to 30 minutes in the sun at least twice a week without sunscreen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, vitamin D supplements can also boost levels. Our experts suggest that anyone interested in supplements check with their healthcare provider first because it is possible to over-supplement. Supplements don&#8217;t require a prescription, but that doesn&#8217;t mean they can&#8217;t cause unpleasant side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This is a fat-soluble vitamin, so taking too much can build up to toxic levels in your blood,&#8221; Wiemann says.
