This small part of the male reproductive system plays a not-so-small role in male fertility by helping to produce semen, and the prostate\u2019s proximity to the bladder means it can also impact urination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor a gland the size of a walnut that\u2019s tucked away out of sight and out of mind, a man\u2019s prostate can have its fair share of problems,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Samadi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a New York City-based prostate cancer surgeon and urologist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prostate cancer affects about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13 out of every 100 American men<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and prostate enlargement, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benign prostatic hyperplasia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BPH), is so common it affects about 50% of men between the ages of 51 and 60. BPH can cause frustrating symptoms and more severe complications if left untreated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many other health conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/prostatecancer911.com\/dr-david-samadi\/\">Dr. Samadi<\/a> says the best approach to preventing prostate problems is a regimen of regular exercise, stress management, adequate sleep, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and\u2014of course\u2014eating a healthy diet. But what, exactly, does a healthy prostate diet look like? Here are the five best foods for prostate health (and four you should limit or avoid).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-diet-affect-prostate-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does diet affect prostate health?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re wondering how what you eat affects a small gland in your reproductive system, the answer is in your cells, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sperlingprostatecenter.com\/profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan Sperling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, medical director of Sperling Prostate Center in Delray Beach, Florida. Eating a typical Western diet of red meat, processed meats, fried foods, high-fat dairy, high-sugar drinks, and prepackaged foods causes chronic inflammation which puts \u201cconstant demands on your body\u2019s cells,\u201d according to Dr. Sperling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This stress on healthy cells, adds Dr. Sperling, can cause mutations that increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. These mutations can lead to prostate inflammation, abnormal precancerous prostate cells, and prostate cancer itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news? Eating anti-inflammatory foods can decrease your risk for prostate problems and, in some cases, reverse some of the damage done before it turns into a bigger problem, says Dr. Sperling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anti-inflammatory-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammatory diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the Mediterranean diet, which is not a \u201cdiet,\u201d per se, so much as a style of eating. The focus is on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean poultry, fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and nuts, seeds, and legumes high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated healthy fats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/kbwnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kimberley Wiemann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MS, RDN, a Long Island-based dietitian, the research is inconclusive in tying any specific diet to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Still, some studies have shown that people whose diets were closely aligned with the Mediterranean diet or the DASH diet were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1047279718302837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less likely to be diagnosed with an aggressive prostate cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth of these diets are rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains,\u201d says Wiemann, who notes that it\u2019s widely accepted that a balanced diet rich in these foods can help reduce the risk of cancers, including prostate cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mediterranean and DASH diets aren\u2019t the only anti-inflammatory options out there, but the evidence isn\u2019t quite as strong yet for experts to recommend other diets for prostate health. The keto diet, for example, may <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contribute to a reduction in insulin. Couple that information with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7379157\/\">studies<\/a> showing that insulin reduction may inhibit tumors in different ways,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and excitement about the potential for dietary treatment of cancer is naturally growing. There are still ongoing clinical trials looking at this connection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-foods-to-eat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 foods to eat<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many types of foods are considered anti-inflammatory. However, a few have been specifically studied for their benefits in treating or preventing prostate cancer and BPH. When in doubt, says Dr. Sperling, think about your heart: \u201cA general rule of thumb: If it\u2019s good for the heart, it\u2019s good for the prostate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-fatty-fish\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Fatty fish<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mediterranean diet heavily emphasizes eating fatty or oily fish, a strategy you should definitely adopt if you\u2019re concerned about prostate health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCold-water, fatty fish like salmon, albacore tuna, halibut, sardines, trout, and mackerel\u2026are high in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which prevent inflammation the way saturated animal fats cause it,\u201d Dr. Samadi says. \u201cThese omega-3-rich fish have also been linked to a lower risk of high-grade prostate cancer and a decreased mortality rate of prostate cancer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Samadi recommends eating two to three servings of broiled, baked, or grilled fish each week. Getting your omega-3 servings from one of their natural sources can sometimes pack a bigger punch than when you just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/supplements-to-lower-cholesterol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take a supplement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-cruciferous-vegetables\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Cruciferous vegetables<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not a huge fan of broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and kale, it\u2019s time to learn to love them. Dr. Samadi says these cruciferous vegetables are exceptionally high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, which are all excellent for fighting free radicals in the body that can increase the risk of cancers, including in the prostate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you have to pick just <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Make it broccoli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBroccoli stands out as a prostate superfood, as it contains a phytochemical called glucoraphanin,\u201d says Dr. Samadi, \u201c[which] research has linked to possibly targeting and preventing cancer cell growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-pumpkin-seeds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Pumpkin seeds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While prostate cancer prevention is important, it\u2019s even more common for men to face an enlarged prostate as they age. Focusing on prostate health can improve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/urologic-diseases\/prostate-problems\/prostate-enlargement-benign-prostatic-hyperplasia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of BPH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which include urinary frequency and urgency, frequent urination during the night (nocturia), and incontinence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the easiest and most risk-free ways to improve BPH is by consuming pumpkin products, especially pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed oil. Both have been shown to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/ebp\/Abstract\/2018\/06000\/Do_pumpkin_seeds_or_pumpkin_supplements_reduce.30.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce urinary obstruction symptoms in men with BPH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmcurol.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12894-021-00910-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested pumpkin seed oil wasn\u2019t as effective as the medication Flomax (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tamsulosin-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamsulosin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in reducing symptoms, it still had health benefits and, importantly, didn\u2019t cause any side effects.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-tomatoes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Tomatoes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another unexpected prostate superfood is the humble tomato, which contains a powerful plant-based compound called lycopene. Lycopene not only gives tomatoes their characteristic red color, but it may help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11192026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk of epithelial cancers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0753332220306521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specifically prostate cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Wiemann, possibly due to its antioxidant properties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only catch? As delicious as fresh tomato wedges are in a summer salad, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019ll get far more lycopene per serving by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2002\/04\/020422073341.htm\">cooking<\/a> your tomatoes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as in a healthy tomato sauce.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-green-tea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. The key foods to avoid for prostate health are ones known to cause inflammation across multiple systems in the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-processed-meat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Processed meat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processed and prepackaged meat products\u2014including deli meat, bacon, hot dogs, sausage, ham, and canned meats\u2014are high in saturated fat and sodium as well as nitrates, which Wiemann says are associated with a higher risk for developing cancers, including prostate cancer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35303088\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, participants who consumed high amounts of food additive nitrates, especially sodium nitrate, had a higher prostate cancer risk than participants who didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-dairy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Dairy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all dairy contributes to a higher risk of prostate cancer. But dairy products high in saturated fat, like whole milk, ice cream, and cheese, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6518142\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may have a negative impact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on prostate health, says Dr. Samadi, who adds that diets high in dairy have also been linked to an increased incidence of BPH.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-red-meat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Red meat<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, what\u2019s good for your heart is good for your prostate, per Dr. Sperling, and red meat has been on the \u201creduce or avoid\u201d list for cardiovascular health for a long time. For good reason, too, since eating a lot of it can contribute to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/the-effects-of-processed-meats-on-your-heart-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension and high cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sperling says red meat has also been shown to cause inflammatory processes in the prostate, which not only aggravate BPH but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/joim.12543\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could be a precursor to prostate cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to decrease your red meat intake without\u00a0 cutting it out entirely, try avoiding red meat that\u2019s been grilled or cooked well done, says Dr. Samadi: \u201cPart of the reason meat may be associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer could be due to substances formed when it\u2019s grilled, called heterocyclic amines (HCAs).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HCAs form when meat is exposed to high temperatures, and have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/diet\/cooked-meats-fact-sheet\">linked<\/a> to certain types of cancers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; instead of grilling meat, try baking, broiling, or cooking it in soups, stews, or chilis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-added-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Added sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Samadi, sugar fuels cancer cells, so reducing your intake by limiting foods and beverages containing high amounts of sugar\u2014like soda, sweetened tea, cookies, pies, cakes, and other baked goods\u2014could help protect your prostate health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMen who avoid drinking sugary beverages are doing a favor to their prostate, as reduced sugar consumption can lessen symptoms and improve the prostate health of men with BPH or prostatitis,\u201d says Dr. Samadi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t forget to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-are-carbohydrates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consider your carbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: products made with refined carbohydrates are often higher in sugar than ones made with whole grains, so opt for brown rice, whole wheat bread, and oats, barley, or quinoa whenever possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-treatment-options-for-good-prostate-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other treatment options for good prostate health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, dietary changes aren\u2019t the only thing that can improve prostate health. The best treatment for prostate issues is a combination of strategies for overall health that may include additional lifestyle changes, medication, or supplements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lifestyle-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to eating healthy, it\u2019s important to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain a healthy weight\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise regularly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink plenty of water daily<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cancer-screening-for-men\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tested for prostate cancer as you age<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cAs a prostate cancer surgeon, I strongly recommend prostate cancer screening beginning at age 40 for all men,\u201d Dr. Samadi says. \u201cYou can take a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test at your doctor\u2019s office and know the results within a day.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/prostate-problems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of prostate cancer and other prostate problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sooner prostate cancer is found, the earlier treatment or active surveillance can begin.
