There are many kinds&mdash;from condoms to oral contraceptives and vaginal rings.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value='{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}' data-sheets-userformat='{\"2\":6849,\"3\":{\"1\":0},\"9\":1,\"10\":2,\"12\":0,\"14\":{\"1\":2,\"2\":0},\"15\":\"Arial\"}' data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&rsquo;re on a hormonal form of birth control like the patch, ring, or the pill, it&rsquo;s important to know that some medications can make your contraceptive less effective. And while most antibiotics won&rsquo;t reduce the efficacy of hormonal birth control, there are two that will. Here&rsquo;s what you need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-antibiotics-and-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take antibiotics and birth control?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most antibiotics don&rsquo;t affect birth control, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medzino.com\/us\/kimberly-langdon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Langdon, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, OB-GYN and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coologics.com\/about-us\/#faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coologics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifampin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rifadin (rifampin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifabutin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mycobutin (rifabutin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been shown to reduce the effectiveness of some hormonal contraceptives, but data on how much these antibiotics impact hormonal birth control efficacy is lacking and they are not as commonly prescribed as other options.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytoolboxgenomics.com\/about-us\/erika-gray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pharm.D., chief medical officer and co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toolboxgenomics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toolbox Genomics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a DNA and epigenetic testing company, the following forms of hormonal birth control may be affected by rifampin, and to a lesser extent, rifabutin:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Combined oral contraceptives, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birth<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">control pills that contain a combination of synthetic estrogen and progestin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Progestin-only pills (minipill), <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral contraceptives containing only synthetic progestin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/plan-b-one-step\"><b>Plan B<\/b><\/a><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an emergency contraceptive pill made of levonorgestrel that is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Contraceptive patches,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraception applied to the skin that releases estrogen and progestin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vaginal rings,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> flexible rings that are inserted into the vagina, releasing a combination of estrogen and progestin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ulipristal (Ella)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an emergency contraceptive pill made of levonorgestrel that is taken within 120 hours of unprotected sex<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These antibiotics do <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/contraception\/antibiotics-contraception\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affect how well other birth control options work, such as an intrauterine device (IUD), Depo Provera (progestin-only shot), hormonal implant, or barrier methods such as foam, condom, or diaphragm.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With perfect use, meaning you take the pill at the same time every day and never miss a dose, oral contraceptives are up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/3977-birth-control-the-pill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but because many users miss a pill from time to time, their rate of effectiveness with normal use is closer to 91%. Most antibiotics won&rsquo;t affect birth control efficacy, so your chances of getting pregnant are the same as with normal use unless you&rsquo;re taking rifampin or rifabutin, says Dr. Gray.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Planned Parenthood, having diarrhea or vomiting for more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/ask-experts\/im-currently-taking-birth-control-is-it-okay-for-me-to-use-laxatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">48 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or taking laxatives can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. A backup method of birth control such as a barrier method should be used for seven days to prevent pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><b>What is the best birth control pill for you?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-the-research-says\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What the research says<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10223781\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the antibiotic rifampin (600 mg\/day) reduced the effectiveness of birth control pills&mdash;as did rifabutin (300 mg\/day); the drugs reduced levels of ethinyl estradiol (a synthetic estrogen) and norethindrone (a synthetic progesterone).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But according to Dr. Langdon, it&rsquo;s unlikely you will get pregnant when on hormonal birth control if you&rsquo;re taking antibiotics other than rifampin or rifabutin. <\/span><b>In fact, according to a <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28694152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>2017 systematic review<\/b><\/a><b>, no evidence of drug interactions between hormonal contraception and non-rifamycin antibiotics was found.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rifampin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rifampin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifampin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rifadin (rifampin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treats the infectious diseases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/tuberculosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tuberculosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and meningitis. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This antibiotic is known to interact with hormonal contraceptives, potentially reducing their effectiveness, says Dr. Gray. &ldquo;Rifampin affects the way the body metabolizes hormones, specifically estrogen and progestin, which are the key components of most hormonal birth control methods,&rdquo; she explains.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&rsquo;s more, Rifampin induces the activity of certain liver enzymes that are responsible for breaking down and eliminating hormones, adds Dr. Gray. When this occurs, the hormones in birth control are metabolized and eliminated from the body more quickly than usual, making them less effective and increasing the risk of unplanned pregnancy, she explains.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rifabutin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rifabutin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rifabutin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mycobutin (rifabutin)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to treat tuberculosis, Mycobacterium avium complex disease (MAC), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/h-pylori-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H. pylori.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like rifampin, the antibiotic rifabutin may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal birth control because it can speed up the breakdown of hormones (estrogen and progestin) in the body by increasing the activity of liver enzymes, explains Dr. Gray. As a result, hormone levels in the blood might decrease, she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-other-medications-affect-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What other medications affect birth control?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some medications, like antifungals, can interact with hormonal birth control and potentially reduce its effectiveness, says Dr. Gray. Examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anticonvulsants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carbamazepine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbamazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxcarbazepine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxcarbazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenytoin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenytoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/topiramate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">topiramate<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antifungal medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/griseofulvin-microsize\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">griseofulvin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluconazole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, metronidazol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/itraconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itraconazole<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Antiretroviral medications<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for HIV such as ritonavir and efavirenz<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Herbal supplements <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/st-johns-wort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John&rsquo;s Wort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/melatonin\/effects-on-birth-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&mdash;although more research is needed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>diabetes medication<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/actos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actos (pioglitazone)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>General anesthesia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Sugammadex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>anti-nausea medication<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/emend\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emend (aprepitant)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>pulmonary hypertension medication<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tracleer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tracleer (bosentan)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>NSAIDS<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/naproxen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naproxen<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-interfere-with-birth-control\/\"><b>11 medications that interfere with birth control<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"birth-control-and-antibiotics-faqs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control and antibiotics FAQs&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"can-amoxicillin-or-other-antibiotics-affect-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can amoxicillin or other antibiotics affect birth control?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Z-Pak, or azithromycin,&nbsp; is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is commonly prescribed for various bacterial infections, says Dr. Gray. &ldquo;There is no strong evidence suggesting that azithromycin significantly affects the effectiveness of hormonal birth control,&rdquo; she says. If you&rsquo;re taking rifampin or any other medication, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider before taking Plan B or Ella.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-long-after-taking-antibiotics-does-birth-control-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long after taking antibiotics does birth control work?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most antibiotics do not significantly impact birth control, with the exception of rifampin and, to some extent, rifabutin, says Dr. Gray. If you&rsquo;re on either of these medications short-term, discuss with your healthcare provider and use a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.andorrapediatrics.com\/antibiotic-oral-contraceptive-interactions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form of birth control (a barrier method such as a condom) for the duration of your treatment and for seven days after you&rsquo;ve finished to avoid an unintended pregnancy.
