Below, we\u2019ll explore how common pregnancy is in the United States and worldwide, along with other statistics related to childbearing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPregnancy is the period when a woman\u2019s body carries a baby growing inside her,\u201d explained <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturesrise.com\/pages\/sony-sherpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sony Sherpa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a holistic physician at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturesrise.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature&#8217;s Rise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an organic wellness company. \u201cWhen a woman conceives, one of the sperm from her partner successfully fertilizes her egg, and the fertilized egg implants itself in the uterus, resulting in pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A full-term pregnancy will take an average of 40 weeks before the woman gives birth. This is divided into three stages: the first trimester, the second trimester, and the third trimester.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 3.6 million births registered in the United States in 2021. This was a 1% increase from 2020 numbers. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/sosmap\/fertility_rate\/fertility_rates.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"common-pregnancy-complications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common pregnancy complications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant women may experience the following maternal health complications when pregnant:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preterm labor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-eclampsia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placental abruption\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cesarean delivery<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sherpa explained, \u201cGestational diabetes occurs when a woman&#8217;s blood sugar levels become too high due to her body not producing enough insulin during pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preterm labor happens if a woman gives birth before 37 weeks of gestation, often resulting in low birth weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPreeclampsia is a pregnancy-induced condition marked by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system, such as the liver or kidneys,\u201d said Dr. Sherpa. \u201cIt can be life-threatening to both the mother and the baby and should be managed promptly by medical professionals.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Placental abruption means that the placenta has become unattached to the uterus before birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cesarean delivery, or a C-section, is a way to deliver a baby if vaginal delivery is not an option or unsafe for the mother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sherpa also noted, \u201cInfections during pregnancy are common and can lead to complications, so it\u2019s important to take steps to reduce your risk of infection.\u201d This includes practicing good hygiene, cooking meat fully, and talking to your healthcare professional about vaccinations, among other things.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-cost-of-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost of pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaiser Family Foundation found that between 2018 to 2020, those with private health insurance plans had claims that averaged $18,865 for pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-costs\/issue-brief\/health-costs-associated-with-pregnancy-childbirth-and-postpartum-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KFF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same analysis found that the average out-of-pocket costs paid by these women were $2,854.
