In fact, in the United States, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/health-statistics\/overweight-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 3 adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is overweight (defined as a body mass index, or BMI, between 25 and 25.99), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/php\/data-research\/adult-obesity-facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two in five <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are obese (defined as a BMI over 30). <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthy-weight-growth\/food-activity\/overweight-obesity-impacts-health.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being obese and overweight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads to an increased risk of serious health issues, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polycystic ovary syndrome, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is a common women\u2019s health condition that\u2019s linked to obesity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the endocrine disorder affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% to 13%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 of women of reproductive age, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6734597\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38% to 88%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are overweight or obese. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/8316-polycystic-ovary-syndrome-pcos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes higher levels of androgen hormone production, resulting in symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, acne, excess hair growth, cysts, skin tags, thinning hair, skin darkening, and infertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5622756\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is critical to minimizing PCOS symptoms. In addition to eating a healthy diet and regular exercise, certain diabetes medications, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\">Ozempic<\/a>, may help. Keep reading to find out how Ozempic works for PCOS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Ozempic?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic-0-25-or-0-5-mg-dose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(semaglutide) belongs to a class of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/medications-containing-semaglutide-marketed-type-2-diabetes-or-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. These medications work by copying the action of a hormone called GLP-1 that\u2019s released by the pancreas after eating. GLP-1 stimulates insulin secretion, decreases appetite, and increases satiety (feeling full and satisfied).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brand-name medication is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in adults and adolescents over the age of 12 as a treatment for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a condition in which the body does not use insulin correctly, leading to high levels of blood glucose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic comes in a prefilled syringe that you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a618008.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inject<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> subcutaneously (under the skin) once a week in the stomach, thigh, or upper arm. A pill version of semaglutide called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> works the same as Ozempic but in daily doses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rybelsus-weight-loss\/\"><b>Who can take Rybelsus for weight loss?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another weekly injection of semaglutide, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-new-drug-treatment-chronic-weight-management-first-2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for use in patients with obesity, says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/minishasood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minisha Sood, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified endocrinologist at Northwell Health\u2019s Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this time, Ozempic does not have FDA approval for weight loss, but it may be prescribed off-label for this purpose. No FDA approved generic version of semaglutide injection is currently available. Compounded versions of injectable semaglutide are available from compounding pharmacies, but these have not been tested by or approved by the FDA.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-ozempic-for-pcos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Ozempic for PCOS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, factors contributing to its onset include chronic inflammation, higher levels of androgens (male sex hormones that impede ovulation), weight gain, and insulin resistance, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/22206-insulin-resistance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">precursor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to prediabetes and Type 2 diabetes that impairs the body\u2019s ability to use glucose efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic and other semaglutide medications have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/2042018821989238\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promise in women who are overweight or obese with PCOS, according to Dr. Sood, who explains that these medications improve metabolic parameters like weight loss and blood sugar levels. More studies looking at the effect of semaglutide GLP-1 medications on PCOS are underway, and Dr. Sood expects them to show a positive outcome of this class of drugs as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But does taking Ozempic increase fertility? In short, yes\u2014but indirectly, says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/hpvhub.com\/doctor\/monte-swarup-m-d-facog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monte Swarup, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified OB-GYN in Chandler, Arizona. It can help because of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4456969\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">link<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between infertility and obesity, he says, adding that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> losing weight often helps patients who had stopped ovulating restart their cycle. In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10531549\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 27 obese women with PCOS who were unable to lose weight through lifestyle changes were given a weekly 0.5-ounce dose of semaglutide for three weeks. Over 80% experienced at least a 5% reduction in their body weight. Even so, more research into the effects of Ozempic for women with PCOS is needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT05646199\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a drug used to lower blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes, is currently being conducted, says Dr. Swarup. While research is still ongoing, he says, patients have shown a reduction in body weight and metabolic and hormonal parameter improvement with semaglutide. That is, semaglutide has been shown to improve hormone regulation and metabolism, resulting in weight loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Sood, other GLP-1s have more data to support their use as weight loss drugs. For example, in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3241299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 41 obese but not diabetic women were given exenatide injections (with no lifestyle changes). They experienced modest weight loss and significantly reduced waist circumferences. Research has shown that liraglutide is effective at weight loss and maintenance in individuals with or without Type 2 diabetes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since obesity and PCOS are linked, these medications can also improve symptoms of PCOS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><b>GLP-1 agonists: Uses, common brands, and safety info<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the best weight loss medication for PCOS, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2023\/0300\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Family Physician<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points to Metformin as a first-line treatment for individuals with PCOS who have metabolic issues such as insulin resistance. Dr. Swarup adds that the Type 2 diabetes drug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acarbose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acarbose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also helpful in treating insulin resistance and PCOS. Your best bet? Insulin resistance makes the body\u2019s cells less responsive to insulin, causing the pancreas to ramp up insulin production. This results in hormonal imbalances and causes the ovaries to overproduce androgens. Excess androgens worsen PCOS symptoms like irregular periods and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/hirsutism\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hirsutism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (hair growth on the face, chest, and back).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance can also affect ovarian function, leading to the formation of cysts and irregular ovulation. What\u2019s more, weight gain is common among women with PCOS, which can worsen insulin resistance and lead to the development of Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"will-insurance-cover-ozempic-for-pcos\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will insurance cover Ozempic for PCOS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is the only semaglutide that is FDA approved for treating overweight and obesity, and it may be covered by insurance for individuals with PCOS who meet eligibility requirements, says Dr. Sood.
