Alcohol\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good idea to opt for mocktails instead of cocktails when taking this medication as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gabapentin-and-alcohol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol does not mix well with gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So drinking alcohol while taking gabapentin will result in additive or synergistic impairment.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-central-nervous-system-depressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Central nervous system depressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gapabentin is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant, so it can be a dangerous combination to take it with another CNS depressant, such as oxycodone, Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), or Ambien (zolpidem).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/fda-brief\/fda-brief-fda-requires-new-warnings-gabapentinoids-about-risk-respiratory-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the FDA announced it was requiring new warnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on gabapentanoids (which includes gabapentin) about the risk of severe respiratory distress, which could lead to death, when combining the medication with opioid drugs or other CNS depressants. Older people and those with existing respiratory issues (such as asthma or COPD) have a higher risk of respiratory complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other medications have potential <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/gabapentin-oral-route\/precautions\/drg-20064011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interactions with gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. For your safety, it\u2019s important to let your healthcare provider know every medicine you\u2019re taking, including any recreational drug use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-some-vitamins-and-supplements\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Some vitamins and supplements<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you tell your provider about medications you take, don\u2019t leave out vitamins and supplements. While gabapentin doesn\u2019t have any known vitamin interactions, being deficient in\u2014or having too much\u2014of a particular vitamin sometimes resembles a condition that might warrant using gabapentin. For example, B6 and B12 deficiencies can cause nerve damage and neuropathy. Knowing what you are taking will help your provider diagnose and prescribe you properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking gabapentin for epilepsy, you should avoid ginkgo biloba. Large amounts of ginkgotoxin, which is found in ginkgo biloba, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-ginkgo\/art-20362032\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can cause seizures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thus, it\u2019s possible that taking ginkgo could reduce the anticonvulsive effects of gabapentin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-antacids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Antacids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be tempting to pop an antacid to counteract heartburn or an upset stomach when it arises. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/gabapentin\/taking-gabapentin-with-other-medicines-and-herbal-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antacids can reduce the effectiveness of your gabapentin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by not allowing the body to absorb as much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need to take an aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids like Maalox or Mylanta, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/21561-gabapentin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wait at least two hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before you take your next dose of gabapentin. \u201cThis way, the mineral has been absorbed before the gabapentin hits the circulation,\u201d Dr. Nathan says. Or, ask your healthcare provider if you should try another type of medication for heartburn, such as Nexium (esomeprazole).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-dehydration\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Dehydration<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be purposeful about drinking plenty of water, as gabapentin can sometimes cause mild dehydration or dry mouth as possible side effects, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/neurowellnessspa.com\/about\/care-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Josh Lichtman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DO, a psychiatrist and medical director at Neuro Wellness Spa in Los Angeles. It\u2019s important to note this possibility and try to drink throughout the day. Peeing less often and dark pee that smells strong are signs of dehydration to look out for. It may depend, in part, on whether you\u2019re taking an immediate-release or extended-release form of the medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However you take it, gabapentin works best when it\u2019s at a steady level in your system, so it\u2019s important to stick to the same time to avoid having your levels drop too low\u2014and the medicine not working.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience any serious side effects, be sure to contact your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYour healthcare provider can assess your situation and determine if your symptoms are related to gabapentin and provide appropriate guidance,\u201d Dr. Lichtman says. \u201cThey may adjust the dose, change the timing of the dose, consider alternative treatment options, or just wait it out, as it is most likely a temporary side effect.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you start experiencing side effects while taking gabapentin, don\u2019t stop taking the drug without talking to your healthcare provider. You should notify your healthcare provider about your symptoms or seek immediate medical attention for any severe side effects like suicidal thoughts, signs of an allergic reaction, or trouble breathing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with all medications, discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider so they can prescribe the appropriate regimen for your symptoms. Let them know if you\u2019re taking any prescription or over-the-counter meds that could be causing an interaction.
