Furosemide works on the kidneys to help minimize water retention, says Dr. Pate. She says it helps alleviate symptoms such as bloating, ankle or leg swelling, and trouble breathing due to illnesses such as heart failure, liver disease, or kidney difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-foods-and-beverages-to-avoid-with-furosemide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 foods and beverages to avoid with furosemide<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furosemide may be affected by certain foods and beverages, so your healthcare provider may recommend avoiding or limiting their intake. For example, you may wonder if you must avoid grapefruit juice, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/familydoctor.org\/drug-food-interactions-how-grapefruit-interacts-with-certain-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interacts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with many medications. That said, if you\u2019re taking furosemide, you\u2019ll want to watch your intake of high-sodium foods, caffeine, and alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-high-sodium-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. High-sodium foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you a fan of potato chips? You\u2019ll want to pass on that extra salt if you\u2019re taking furosemide. If someone is on a diuretic medication, they are probably already experiencing fluid retention, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/family-medicine\/dr-eric-michael-ascher-do-11379678\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Ascher, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified family medicine physician at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lenoxhill.northwell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northwell Health\u2019s Lenox Hill Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5409798\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Too much sodium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes our bodies to hold onto more water, potentially increasing swelling and fluid retention, Ascher explains, and advises to watch out for these foods in particular, which are all packed with sodium: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen meals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canned and jarred soups<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processed meats, including deli meats and hot dogs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred condiments and sauces<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unsure how much sodium a specific food contains, check the nutrition labels on its packaging. The American Heart Association <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sodium\/how-much-sodium-should-i-eat-per-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium daily. Less than 1,500 milligrams is ideal for optimal heart health and blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And you\u2019ll want to take it easy on the salt shaker, advises Dr. Kuhn. He suggests avoiding salty items in favor of fresh fruits, meats, and vegetables, which naturally contain much less sodium. You may not need to give up caffeine altogether, according to Dr. Ascher. Moderation is key, he says, so be sure to speak with your healthcare provider about a safe amount.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Alcohol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether your preference is a glass of wine or a hot toddy, it\u2019s best to skip the alcohol when taking furosemide. That\u2019s because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5537780\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is also a diuretic, and combining the two can cause severe dehydration, says Dr. Kuhn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol may even counteract your treatment by causing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/high-blood-pressure\/expert-answers\/blood-pressure\/faq-20058254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and stress to your body, asserts Dr. Ascher. Alcohol can also worsen side effects of furosemide, such as dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting, notes Dr. Pate.
