Now your doctor is recommending that you join the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/ATV.0000000000000073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25% of people over age 40 who are on statin therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/cholesterol-management\/guide\/understanding-numbers#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LDL cholesterol into the safe zone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Does this mean you are going to need to give up your favorite adult beverages, too?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve got good news! Probably not\u2014at least not for the sake of your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/crestor-vs-lipitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lipitor or Crestor prescription<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is it safe to mix statins and alcohol?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStatins in general are safe with alcohol consumption,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiology.uw.edu\/faculty\/eugene-yang-md-ms-facc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Eugene Yang, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a member of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acc.org\/#sort=%40fcommonsortdate90022%20descending\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Cardiology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Prevention Council and medical director of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/eastside.uwmedicine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Washington Medicine Eastside Specialty Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Bellevue, Washington.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, just as with many rules, there are exceptions to this one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Liver inflammation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn some cases, statins can lead to mild inflammation of the liver as a potential side effect, so if people consume alcohol in excess and they have the statins causing some mild liver inflammation, then that could make it worse,\u201d Dr. Yang says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the risk of liver inflammation as a statin side effect is so low that the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-drug-safety-communication-important-safety-label-changes-cholesterol-lowering-statin-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Food and Drug Administration no longer recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> routine monitoring of liver function for patients taking statins, Dr. Yang points out (routine monitoring used to be standard).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9506 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_082319_Statin-1024x480.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating the risk of mixing alcohol and meds\" width=\"604\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_082319_Statin-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_082319_Statin-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_082319_Statin-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_082319_Statin-1536x720.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_082319_Statin.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Liver disease<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concern, experts say, is most applicable to those who have some sort of underlying liver-related problem, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/liverfoundation.org\/for-patients\/about-the-liver\/diseases-of-the-liver\/non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonalcoholic fatty liver disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStatins are processed in the liver, so if your liver is impaired in any way it might not be able to process the medication in the same way a healthy liver could,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sop.washington.edu\/people\/jennifer-bacci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jennifer Bacci, Pharm.D., <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an assistant professor at the University of Washington School of Pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, she recommends that anyone with chronic liver disease completely abstain from alcohol while taking statins (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2001\/1101\/p1555.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abstinence from alcohol is recommended for all people with chronic liver disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, statins or not).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Excessive alcohol use<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if you don\u2019t have liver issues? You <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to have an honest conversation about alcohol use with your doctor before starting statin therapy, she says, and you also need to make sure you are not exceeding the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/dietaryguidelines\/2015\/guidelines\/appendix-9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended daily guidelines for alcohol use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (one drink per day for women; two drinks per day for men) because it is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excess<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alcohol consumption that can lead to problems in the general population.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The bottom line: statins and alcohol are (mostly) safe<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the encouraging news about statins and alcohol consumption, Dr. Yang says it isn\u2019t unusual for patients to feel apprehensive about mixing the two. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are worried, speak to your doctor about a baseline liver function test, which Dr. Yang provides to patients when there are concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the tests come back abnormal, Dr. Bacci says that would be a signal to do some additional information gathering.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve already given up burgers, pizza, doughnuts, and ice cream in an attempt to lower cholesterol levels.
