But most people didn\u2019t give much thought to more serious illnesses during the summer\u2026 until COVID-19 came along.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, many people wonder if they might be at risk for contracting other serious illnesses in the summer, too. One illness that many people don\u2019t associate with summer, but you still can catch, is pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection of one or both lungs in which the air sacs fill up with pus or fluid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, one type of bacterial pneumonia known as walking pneumonia is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most commonly spread in late summer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth considering your chances of contracting this potentially serious illness during the warm summer months. Experts suggest that most people probably don\u2019t need to hide out in their houses to avoid it, but some people are at greater risk than others\u2014and they may want to be extra careful in some locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of your particular risk, you can still benefit from understanding what causes pneumonia and how to reduce the risk of developing it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-pneumonia\"><b>What is pneumonia?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that is caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pneumonia\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When germs get down into your lungs, your immune system is alerted and sends immune cells to attack the invaders. This causes the alveoli, the tiny air sacs where your body exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide when you breathe, to become inflamed. As a result, the air sacs may fill up with fluid and cause you to develop symptoms of pneumonia: coughing and difficulty breathing, among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bacterial-pneumonia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial pneumonia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have recently undergone surgery, have weakened immune systems, or have respiratory disease or viral infection are at the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/lung-health-diseases\/lung-disease-lookup\/pneumonia\/what-causes-pneumonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greatest risk for developing bacterial pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the American Lung Association (ALA). Examples of bacterial pneumonia include pneumococcal pneumonia, \u201catypical pneumonia,\u201d (which is not actually uncommon), and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lung.org\/blog\/what-is-walking-pneumonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">walking pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"viral-pneumonia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viral pneumonia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viruses are responsible for about one-third of the cases of pneumonia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/winter-illness-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Johns Hopkins Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most common<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes of viral pneumonia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include viruses that affect the upper respiratory tract, such as influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"fungal-pneumonia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fungal pneumonia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain fungi can cause pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in people with weakened immune systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-season-is-pneumonia-more-common\">What season is pneumonia more common?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4910181\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that pneumonia occurs more often in the wintertime. The cold, dry air of wintertime seems to be associated with higher rates of illnesses like pneumonia and the flu.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winter is associated with higher rates of respiratory illnesses in general. When it\u2019s cold and blustery outside, people spend more time indoors where it\u2019s warm. And when people crowd together inside, they\u2019re more likely to spread infections to one another. The problem is further complicated because cold, dry air also appears to weaken resistance, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that doesn\u2019t mean you can\u2019t get pneumonia in the summer. Germs spread regardless of the temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can spread germs to others through direct contact via saliva or mucus,\u201d notes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drlaurapurdy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laura Purdy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician who practices virtually in the U.S. \u201cThis can be from sneezing and coughing. This can happen any time of the year, including the summer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-do-you-get-pneumonia-in-the-summer\"><b>How do you get pneumonia in the summer?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the places that you might venture to when the weather is warm. There are a few locations that might make your risk of contracting pneumonia more likely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Spas and pools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hot tubs, spas, and swimming pools can be risky spots for contracting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legionnaires&#8217; Disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a type of bacterial pneumonia that can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/legionellosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">range from mild to serious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s caused by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/legionella\/causes\">Legionella bacteria<\/a> that can grow in water systems and can be inhaled through tiny droplets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor most healthy people, if it caused an infection, it would just lead to cold symptoms,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarah-y-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Park, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kariusdx.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karius<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a company specializing in infectious disease diagnostic testing. \u201cHowever, older people, smokers, and people with underlying medical issues (or who are immunocompromised or have lung problems) can develop pneumonia.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hotels and resorts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Leginonnaire\u2019s disease has also been <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to some hotels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with water management problems. Again, bacteria in the water is usually the culprit, which can grow in places like cooling towers, showers, hot tubs, decorative fountains, and other water features.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Museums and theaters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Air-conditioned entertainment can be just the ticket on a hot day. But spending time in tight proximity with someone who\u2019s sniffing, sneezing, and coughing could be risky, especially if you\u2019re already at increased risk. Keep your distance, and remember good hygiene tips, like not touching your face with your hands and washing your hands frequently.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-pneumonia-contagious\/\"><b>Is pneumonia contagious?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-s-at-risk-of-catching-pneumonia-in-summer\"><b>Who\u2019s at risk of catching pneumonia in summer?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, there are<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pneumonia\/risk-factors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four categories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people who are at higher risk for contracting or developing pneumonia\u2014any time of year:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People older than 65<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children younger than 5<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with ongoing or chronic medical conditions (such as chronic lung disease)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smokers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Park, immunocompromised people and others who cannot fight off infection effectively are among the most vulnerable. \u201cThe highest risk individuals have chronic lung issues, are older adults, or are very young infants,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summertime-pneumonia-symptoms-diagnosis-and-treatment\"><b>Summertime pneumonia symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re unaware that you can catch pneumonia in the summer, you might be tempted to dismiss pneumonia symptoms. People in high-risk categories should seek medical treatment right away as pneumonia can progress quickly in vulnerable people and become life-threatening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor will review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/pneumonia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">order blood tests and other diagnostic tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like a chest X-ray, a sputum culture, and others in order to make the diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pneumonia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pneumonia depends on the type. For instance, bacterial pneumonia requires <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-antibiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to lower your chances of contracting pneumonia, no matter the season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are steps you can take to prevent pneumonia:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mind your health. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to stay as healthy as possible, make sure you\u2019re getting enough sleep, eating a nutrient-rich diet, taking all medications as prescribed, and seeing your healthcare provider for regular checkups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Wash your hands.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Good hygiene, which includes handwashing (for a minimum of 20 seconds to kill germs), can help you avoid contracting an infection from bacteria or viruses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t smoke or vape. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you smoke, your lungs can\u2019t filter out and defend themselves (and the rest of your body) against germs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Address swallowing issues. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have trouble swallowing, you may be more likely to accidentally get food, drinks, or saliva in your lungs, which could facilitate an infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t share drinks or food<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with other people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Beware of mold. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Purdy says there are some cases when mold caused by periods of frequent rainfall has contributed to cases of pneumonia. \u201cIt\u2019s crucial to keep indoor spaces dry and well-ventilated by using dehumidifiers or air conditioning systems as well as opening windows or using fans to circulate air,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Get vaccinated. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to getting a flu shot each year, you should speak with your healthcare provider about the pneumococcal vaccine, which is designed to prevent bacterial pneumonia.
