But that doesn\u2019t mean you can share your meds with your pup. Read on to learn more about how the allergy remedy for your dog works and what vets recommend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-zyrtec-used-for-in-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Zyrtec used for in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cetirizine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetirizine hydrochloride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a brand-name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prescription-savings-card-otc-meds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OTC) second-generation antihistamine approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in humans\u2014but it works similarly in dogs. It helps block <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-medicine-not-working\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as sneezing, itching, and watery eyes, caused by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6129797\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a chemical the immune system releases in response to allergens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec can help reduce the allergic response and provide relief for the dog,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.animalhospitalwm.net\/our_staff.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sara Ochoa, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a veterinarian at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.animalhospitalwm.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in West Monroe, Louisiana, and cofounder of the pet resource site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.howto-pets.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Pets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs can have allergic reactions to various allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold, and certain foods.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may notice your pet has allergies because they are scratching, licking, biting, or rubbing excessively on certain areas of their body or have red or inflamed skin. Zyrtec is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/cetirizine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commonly used<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in dogs to ease itching from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atopic dermatitis, a condition characterized by itchy and inflamed skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flea allergies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stings<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Zyrtec is available over-the-counter and generally considered safe, you should speak with your pet\u2019s veterinarian before administering it. They will take into account your dog\u2019s pre-existing health conditions as well as any other medications or supplements they take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"is-zyrtec-the-same-as-benadryl-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Zyrtec the same as Benadryl for dogs?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are both antihistamines, but they contain different active ingredient: Zyrtec\u2019s active ingredient is cetirizine hydrochloride while Benadryl\u2019s is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK526010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK549776\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Zyrtec and Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are available as over-the-counter medications\u2014and can be given to dogs under a veterinarian\u2019s supervision. However, as a \u201cfirst-generation\u201d antihistamine, Benadryl crosses the blood vessels (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4292164\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood-brain barrier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the central nervous system, and can cause drowsiness. Zyrtec is a second-generation antihistamine, which doesn\u2019t cross the blood-brain barrier to the same degree, and is less likely to cause drowsiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVets have the knowledge and expertise to determine the appropriate dosage and form of Zyrtec for dogs based on their individual needs and health conditions,\u201d says Dr. Ochoa. They can further inform you about any possible drug interactions with other medications, so you can take precautions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zyrtec-dosage-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec dosage for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA hasn\u2019t approved Zyrtec for treating allergies in dogs, so there is no dog-specific Zyrtec product available. You may be able to give your dog the same OTC Zyrtec product you\u2019d buy for yourself at the drugstore\u2014but you\u2019ll need to speak with your vet first, so they can confirm an appropriate canine-specific dose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cZyrtec should be used under the guidance of a veterinarian who can determine the appropriate dosage and duration of treatment for your dog,\u201d Dr. Ochoa says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When considering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckvetmanual.com\/multimedia\/table\/antihistamine-dosages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the correct dose of Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for dogs, your veterinarian will consider your dog\u2019s weight. The dose also depends on the cause of the allergy or itching, the dog\u2019s overall health, symptom severity, and the form of Zyrtec given. Zyrtec is available in 5 mg tablets and 10 mg tablets or as a syrup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard dose recommendation for dogs is 1 mg of Zyrtec per 2.2 pounds of your dog\u2019s body weight. Zyrtec tablets are small, so for doses under 5 mg, it may be easier to use the syrup formulation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec is a fast-acting medication. It typically starts working within an hour of dosing. Dosage times are every 24 hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zyrtec-side-effects-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec side effects for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Benadryl, which has a sedative effect, Zyrtec isn\u2019t as likely to make your dog sleepy. However some small dogs may experience some drowsiness depending on the dosage given. \u00a0 The possible <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veterinarians.org\/zyrtec-for-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Zyrtec for dogs include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive salivation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperactivity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec typically remains in a dog\u2019s system for no longer than 24 hours. If your dog has kidney or liver disease, it may take longer for their body to completely eliminate the medication. If side effects last longer than 24 hours, consult your veterinarian. They can recommend another antihistamine medication that might not have the same side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"zyrtec-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to let your veterinarian know all other medications and supplements your pup is taking, to avoid harmful interactions. Zyrtec may have adverse reactions with other medications, including the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central nervous system depressants, such as opioids (codeine, hydrocodone), benzodiazepines (alprazolam, lorazepam), or muscle relaxants (carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine(MAOIs), and tricyclics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other antihistamines<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf your dog is taking Zyrtec or any other medication, it&#8217;s important to monitor them closely for any signs of adverse reactions,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/maria-baker-931841262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Baker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DVM, a veterinarian at Veterinary Emergency Group in Montclair, New Jersey, and founder of pet resource <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pet-how.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet-how.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThis includes watching for any changes in behavior, appetite, or activity level, as well as monitoring for any unusual symptoms or side effects.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-zyrtec-safe-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Zyrtec safe for dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular Zyrtec is generally safe for dogs at the proper dosage, but Zyrtec-D is not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cZyrtec-D can be dangerous for dogs because it contains a decongestant called pseudoephedrine,\u201d Dr. Ochoa says. \u201cDecongestants can be harmful to dogs due to their stimulant effects, which can lead to increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent scientific research on the effectiveness of cetirizine (the active ingredient in Zyrtec) for dogs is sparse. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/vde.12840\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinary Dermatology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that cetirizine reduced skin allergic symptoms in dogs \u201csignificantly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But a separate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2306-7381\/9\/4\/149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinary Sciences<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 1 mg to 3 mg of cetirizine was \u201cpoorly effective\u201d in reducing symptoms. Without treatment, your dog may experience persistent or recurrent infection that could lead to hearing loss or even long-term ear damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Digestive issues:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Untreated allergies can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and poor nutrient absorption. \u201cPersistent gastrointestinal issues can result in weight loss, malnutrition, and overall weakness if not addressed promptly,\u201d Dr. Ochoa explains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Respiratory problems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In addition to congestion and difficulty breathing, severe cases of dog allergies can lead to asthma-like symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Behavioral changes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201dConstant itching and discomfort can lead to mood swings, irritability, and restlessness,\u201d Dr. Ochoa says. This could be further impacted by your pet having a hard time sleeping. Extended periods of this discomfort could eventually manifest as aggression.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Bacterial or yeast skin infections:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When man\u2019s best friend itches, he scratches his skin. Repeated skin irritation could lead to infections when not treated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Eye infections: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to in humans, allergy can cause itchy and watery eyes. When your pup scratches at its eyes, it can lead to unintended infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s important to work with a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of your dog&#8217;s symptoms, as different conditions may require different treatment approaches,\u201d Dr. Baker recommends. She warns that ignoring \u201cthe root cause\u201d could leave your pet\u2019s discomfort unresolved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-zyrtec-for-dogs-may-reduce-allergy-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Zyrtec for dogs may reduce allergy symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When given at the proper dose, Zyrtec may relieve your dog\u2019s itching and other allergy symptoms. Don\u2019t use Zyrtec-D, which can be dangerous for your dog, and talk to your veterinarian before giving your dog Zyrtec.
