Blood pressure medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBenadryl does not directly interact with blood pressure medications,\u201d says William A. McCann, MD, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allergypartners.com\/providers\/william-a-mccann-m-d-\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chief medical officer of Allergy Partners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHowever, antihistamines such as Benadryl are often combined with decongestant medications such as pseudoephedrine, which can cause increased blood pressure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl may cause side effects with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bystolic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nebivolol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014an FDA-approved medication for treating high blood pressure. \u201cNebivolol stays longer in the body because Benadryl slows the liver\u2019s filtration,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drbenjamingibson\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benjamin Gibson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Austin. \u201cThis may cause lowering of blood pressure and side effects such as headache, dizziness, and changes in heart rate. Anticholinergic drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAcetylcholine is a chemical messenger that allows our nerve cells to communicate with one another and carry out essential functions within our bodies,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/whitneyprude\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whitney Prude, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mywholeandhappylife.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole &amp; Happy Living<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhen acetylcholine is blocked, it interferes with signals in your body and results in common anticholinergic side effects like dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, drowsiness, sedation, hallucinations, memory problems, and trouble urinating.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl has some anticholinergic effects, and you will notice more side effects if you combine Benadryl and an anticholinergic such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atropine, benztropine, glycopyrrolate, or flavoxate, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Benzodiazepines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines\u2014like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diazepam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alprazolam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alprazolam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/clonazepam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clonazepam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lorazepam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lorazepam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and o<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxazepam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">xazepam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014are prescribed for insomnia, anxiety, muscle relaxation, or seizures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl and benzodiazepines don\u2019t interact directly with each other, but both can cause sedation in the CNS and combining the medications can amplify these effects, says Dr. Prude. \u201cBenzodiazepines work by interacting with a receptor in the brain called the GABA type A receptor, which causes sedation\u2014and, at higher doses, amnesia and unconsciousness,\u201d she says. Benadryl causes sedation with its effect on the histamine receptor, she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines and Benadryl should not be taken together, says Dr. Prude. She recommends second-generation antihistamines to treat allergies while taking a benzodiazepine. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/loratadine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loratadine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cetirizine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetirizine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xyzal-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xyzal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levocetirizine-dihydrochloride\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levocetirizine dihydrochloride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are second-generation antihistamines that cross the blood-brain barrier to a much lesser extent and have significantly fewer side effects like drowsiness and impairment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Antidepressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants treat clinical depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and addictions. \u201cCertain antidepressants can interact with diphenhydramine,\u201d Dr. McCann says. \u201cThese include tricyclic antidepressants (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tricyclic-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TCAs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. McCann lays out how each of these classes of antidepressants interacts with Benadryl:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TCAs are closely related to antihistamines, and they cause sedation by blocking histamine, just like diphenhydramine. When taken together, you could become too sedated with symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, and dry mouth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs and SNRIs can make some people drowsy, especially when you first take them. Drowsiness increases when combined with diphenhydramine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to diphenhydramine, MAOIs can cause side effects like dry mouth, drowsiness, and dizziness. Taking Benadryl with MAOIs can exacerbate them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"5-sleeping-aids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Sleeping aids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current statistics suggest that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/sleep-deprivation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 to 70 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. have a sleep disorder. People often use sleeping aids like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxepin-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxepin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to induce sleep or manage insomnia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDiphenhydramine can make people feel drowsy, and combining it with other sleep medications can worsen this effect,\u201d says Dr. McCann. Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl Allergy, is commonly found in nonprescription sleep aids, he says. Be cautious not to consume too much when treating allergies and insomnia. Double check labels, or better yet, ask your pharmacist to make sure you aren\u2019t doubling up on diphenhydramine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Alcohol\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol and Benadryl have sedative functions, so you can experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3334287\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taken together or within the same time frame. Combining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/harmful-interactions-mixing-alcohol-with-medicines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Benadryl can lead to drowsiness, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, poor motor skills, and an increased risk of drug overdose. You shouldn&#8217;t mix the two, especially in older adults who metabolize alcohol more slowly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-other-antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Other antihistamines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Prude says Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and other first and second-generation antihistamines relieve allergy symptoms by blocking histamine receptors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause these medications all work by the same mechanism, there is very little to no benefit to taking more than one,\u201d she says. \u201cIt only results in an increased risk of sedation, impaired mental state, and psychomotor performance, to name a few.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are exceptions for people who have severe allergies and are prescribed high doses of antihistamine under doctor supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Opioids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers commonly prescribe opioids containing ingredients like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tramadol-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tramadol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/methadone-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methadone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxycodone-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxycodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fentanyl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fentanyl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydrocodone-acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrocodone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat moderate or severe pain. Experts suggest that using the medications together can cause adverse reactions due to synergistic activity\u2014Benadryl and an opioid combine to produce more potent sedative effects than if taken alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 4% of drug overdose deaths between 2019 and 2020 involved diphenhydramine and opioids like fentanyl, according to the CDC\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/wr\/mm7141a4.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weekly morbidity and mortality report of October 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The combination of drugs caused stronger sedation in those who took them. The CDC urges patients to use only verifiable pharmacies to avoid illegally manufactured opioids containing diphenhydramine (some manufacturers add it to prevent side effects like itching). People who unknowingly consume these medicines are more susceptible to drug overdose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-benadryl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take Benadryl?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a history of allergic reactions to Benadryl should never take it. Beyond that, Dr. McCann says children should avoid it unless directed by a physician.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, if you have the following conditions, you should not take Benadryl:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Narrow-angle glaucoma:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This occurs when fluid cannot be drained from the eye because of the narrowing of the iris and cornea. Benadryl worsens the condition and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/tips-prevention\/dangerous-medications-glaucoma-dayquil-bendadryl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases the risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of angle closure glaucoma\u2014a medical condition associated with sudden extreme pressure in the eyes. Its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK430857\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> headaches, blurred vision, eye pain, nausea, and vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pregnancy:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Occasionally, taking the proper dose of Benadryl may be safe during pregnancy.
