Both of these neurotransmitters, she adds, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can play a role in depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Increasing them may positively impact mood, alertness, energy, and other common depression symptoms. These beneficial effects can happen within the first two weeks of taking Cymbalta, increasing over the next four to eight weeks, she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepharmacistsguide.com\/about\">Dr. Lewis<\/a> says Cymbalta&#8217;s role in relieving nerve pain is less clear. Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2811866\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an imbalance of serotonin and norepinephrine in central pain pathways plays a role in pain sensitivity. Cymbalta\u2019s ability to increase the amount of these neurotransmitters in the body may be able to decrease nerve pain, says Dr. Lewis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2020.554899\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, indicated that Cymbalta is a safe and effective drug for treating neuropathic pain, fibromyalgia, generalized anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"foods-to-avoid-while-taking-cymbalta\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods to avoid while taking Cymbalta<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many documented drug interactions with Cymbalta but no known food interactions, according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digestivereset.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inna Melamed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., functional medicine practitioner and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive Reset<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you should still monitor the amount of certain beverages you consume, like alcohol and coffee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking a lot of coffee (or other caffeinated beverages) with Cymbalta can increase duloxetine levels, which increases the risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007272.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Dr. Melamed. This rare but potentially severe, life-threatening drug reaction may occur when serotonin levels are too high.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to cut out coffee completely, but you should limit your overall caffeine intake to avoid adverse effects\u2014and apply the same rule to how much alcohol you drink. If you drink caffeinated beverages or moderate amounts of alcohol, speak with your healthcare provider about a safe amount.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCymbalta can affect the liver, [so when combined with alcohol], it can produce a double negative effect,\u201d Dr. Melamed says. It can increase the likelihood of liver problems, including liver damage. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=2f7d4d67-10c1-4bf4-a7f2-c185fbad64ba\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends that people who drink a substantial amount of alcohol should not take Cymbalta.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-cymbalta-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 Cymbalta interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since duloxetine increases norepinephrine and serotonin levels, there are medications you may need to avoid or be careful taking with Cymbalta. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements so they can check for possible drug interactions. When taking Cymbalta, do not start any new medications unless your doctor approves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. NSAIDs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cymbalta-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cymbalta carries a risk of increased bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Dr. Melamed. Combining duloxetine with common NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen can increase this risk since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4809680\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs also are associated with a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to your prescribing healthcare provider about the risks of taking NSAIDs with Cymbalta\u2014you may be instructed to take other pain relievers, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-tylenol-an-nsaid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol (acetaminophen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-other-antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Other antidepressants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people take a combination of antidepressants for various medical conditions. Amphetamines and opioids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amphetamines used to treat ADHD, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can increase serotonin levels, as can opioid medications like fentanyl, says Dr. Lewis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an additional risk with opioids, Dr. Lewis notes: \u201cCymbalta works on a certain enzyme in the body, CYP2D6, [which] could block the conversion of opiates like hydrocodone and oxycodone to their active metabolite, meaning the opiates would not work as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-st-john-s-wort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most herbal supplements don\u2019t increase serotonin levels. Still, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/st-johns-wort-and-depression-in-depth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dietary supplement St. John\u2019s wort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is often thought of as a natural antidepressant, does\u2014so it could lead to serotonin syndrome when taken with Cymbalta. Studies are mixed on the effectiveness of St. John\u2019s wort for treating depression symptoms, and it should only be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional when used for the treatment of depression, especially if you are taking other medications for depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-cymbalta-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for Cymbalta side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact your doctor or seek emergency care if you have recently taken Cymbalta and experience the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007272.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common symptoms of serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: sudden agitation, rapid heart rate, increased body temperature, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, high blood pressure, or sudden changes in blood pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants like Cymbalta come with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the possibility of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. While this is unlikely, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a604030.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicidal thoughts are more common in children and young adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
