But the data isn&rsquo;t conclusive.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27612937\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that low to moderate caffeine intake (40 to 300 mg) increased alertness, attention, and reaction time but did not improve memory, judgment, or decision-making. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8202818\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that while caffeine impacts receptors in the brain responsible for memory, alertness, and cognitive function&mdash;and enhances processing speed&mdash;it does not significantly impact how well you can pay attention.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-rich-in-antioxidants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.118.038908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 research analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated high levels of omega-6 with a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and death. And a 2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31567003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> linked fish oil-based omega-3 supplements with a reduced risk of heart attack and death from heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tea may also improve cholesterol levels. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31610673\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that women who were overweight and supplemented with yerba mate every day for 12 weeks&mdash;along with a reduced calorie food plan&mdash;experienced a reduction in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-improves-digestion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Improves digestion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proponents claim you can use yerba mate as a digestive aid, but no scientific research supports this benefit. Even so, beverages containing caffeine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganmedicine.org\/health-lab\/energy-drinks-caffeine-and-your-digestion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stimulate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gut motility to expedite movement through the digestive tract. According to one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.1703728114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caffeine-containing drinks promote gastric acid secretion, which aids digestion, by activating bitter taste receptors called TAS2Rs in the mouth and stomach.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-reduces-fluid-retention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Reduces fluid retention<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No scientific evidence supports claims that yerba mate tea detoxes the body. However, the caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline in the tea <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ift.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1750-3841.2007.00535.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have mild diuretic properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In other words, these substances may reduce fluid retention by ridding the body of excess salt and water. Because of this diuretic effect, drink plenty of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4725310\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with your yerba mate, especially when consuming several cups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-improves-physical-performance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Improves physical performance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Kulp, the phenolic compounds in yerba mate may improve endurance and decrease muscle damage from exercise. A recent research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35563043\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that phenolic compounds (which suppress inflammation) reduced muscle soreness and increased the rate of post-exercise recovery. And a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29117073\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 11 male cyclists found that yerba mate increased fat utilization and endurance during exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-helps-with-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Helps with weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.br\/j\/bjps\/a\/BrcpCjnRS7mpSsX3WGhjYSr\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, yerba mate can potentially prevent obesity in individuals. The review of clinical trials linked consuming the tea with reduced body weight, BMI, waist circumference, and belly fat. It noted these effects could be related to the high caffeine content of the tea.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3315195\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on mice, yerba mate reduced appetite and the rate of weight gain. It also increased how fast the mice burned fat, says Kulp, leading to a reduced risk of obesity. In a placebo-controlled human <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26408319\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with individuals who were obese, they were given oral yerba mate supplements for 12 weeks.
