Read on to see what veterinarians recommend about treating your cat\u2019s allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-give-cats-benadryl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you give cats Benadryl?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Found over the counter, Benadryl can be given to cats for allergies or other health issues. There are many forms of Benadryl, including liquid, topical, and tablet, and some will work better than others to meet your pet\u2019s needs. Much like in humans, cats can take Benadryl to treat allergies, nausea, sleep, and anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBenadryl is most often used for cats to help with sudden allergic reactions, such as a bee sting,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cat-world.com\/team\/dr-chyrle-bonk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chyrle Bonk, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an Idaho-based veterinarian and cat expert at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/cat-world.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat World<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt can also be used long term for other types of allergies, but it has varying success.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat allergy symptoms are similar to those of humans with allergies: a runny nose, sneezing, itching, and\/or upper respiratory issues. Cats can also have itchy, irritated skin due to allergies. Depending on what they are allergic to, cats may have these allergy symptoms seasonally, like during spring, or year-round.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl works well as an allergy medication because it \u201ccan help decrease the mucus in your cat&#8217;s nose and help with upper respiratory issues due to grass and pollen,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cat-world.com\/team\/dr-sara-ochoa-dvm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sara Ochoa, DVM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veterinarian in Louisiana<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But not all allergy medications for humans are recommended for cats\u2014and you shouldn\u2019t give anything without first checking with your veterinarian.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anti-nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-nausea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl also has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antiemetic properties, meaning it can prevent vomiting. A vet-approved recommended dose of the med, can work as a sleep aid before long travel or a calming Rx if your pet is very anxious and needs to rest. Some pets even take Benadryl to sedate them slightly before visiting the veterinarian.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they do not get as sleepy as humans,\u201d Dr. Ochoa says, \u201ccats will tend to sleep a little more on days when they have taken Benadryl.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"benadryl-dosage-for-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl dosage for cats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always check with your veterinarian before giving your cat Benadryl. They will determine if it\u2019s right for your cat and help you calculate the proper dosage of Benadryl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe amount of Benadryl that you give your cat will be prescribed by your veterinarian,\u201d Dr. Bonk says. \u201cThe dose will depend on their weight, what you\u2019re trying to treat, and any health conditions they have.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, Dr. Ochoa says that a typical dosage is 1 mg per pound, every eight to 12 hours. \u201cSo, a 12-pound cat would need to take about half of an adult 25 mg tablet,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The correct dosage will also depend on what format you use. Dr. Bonk says giving <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cat-world.com\/liquid-benadry-for-cats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liquid Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often easier than pill form and you can get a more accurate dosage. Oral Benadryl will begin working half an hour to an hour after ingestion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTablets can take a few hours to reach peak levels in your cat\u2019s body,\u201d Dr. Ochoa says, so plan accordingly if you\u2019re using Benadryl before a plane or car ride to optimize the effects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl also can be given as an injection, which is a good way to get it into your cat\u2019s system quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"benadryl-for-cats-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl for cats&#8217; side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the sometimes beneficial side effect of sleepiness, there are several other possible side effects of Benadryl. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of urination or urinary retention\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excitement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foaming at the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitor your cat for side effects and speak to your vet about alternate options if needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not be too concerned if your cat foams at the mouth after taking Benadryl. \u201cLiquid Benadryl may cause foaming at the mouth or drooling because it is often flavored with a sweetener to taste like bubble gum or cherry. Your cat may not like these tastes,\u201d Dr. Bonk says. \u201cSimilarly, Benadryl tablets may have a bitter taste that could cause drooling or foaming at the mouth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl will last in your cat\u2019s system for six to 12 hours, at which point both the intended effects and the side effects should go away. Mixing medications with Benadryl can lead to serious side effects or even death.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overdosing on Benadryl can have serious ramifications for your pet, so it\u2019s important that you don\u2019t give your pet more than your vet recommends. Besides the worsening of side effects, too much Benadryl can lead to coma or even death.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"natural-alternatives-to-benadryl-for-cats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural alternatives to Benadryl for cats\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are unable to use Benadryl on your cat, there are natural alternatives you can use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are using Benadryl for skin allergy treatment, Dr. Bonk recommends natural anti-inflammatories such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-e-skin?q=Vitamin%20E%20Skin\"><b>vitamin E<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fish-oil?q=Fish%20Oil%20(Omega%20III%20EPA+DHA)\"><b>fish oil<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they help restore the natural skin barrier. Cats can get vitamin E from food, such as fish, or as a supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish oil is usually given to cats in the form of a capsule or the liquid from the capsule. Oils can have some unwanted side effects, including diarrhea and vomiting\u2014so be sure to tell your cat\u2019s vet if you notice any adverse side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bathing with <\/span><b>shampoos that contain oatmeal or fatty acids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also help soothe the symptoms of allergic skin disease. Not all cats are accepting of baths, but if your cat tolerates bathing, this method can be very effective for itchy skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet has itchy skin, Dr. Ochoa recommends <\/span><b>CBD<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cCannabidiol (CBD) products can also help decrease the inflammation and irritation of your cat\u2019s skin,\u201d she says.
