We went to the veterinarian medical experts to find out.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-my-dog-have-diarrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my dog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have diarrhea?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like with humans, there are numerous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">causes of diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in dogs. Some of them include:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Intestinal parasites<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roundworms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hookworms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whipworms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coccidia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giardia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dietary indiscretion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where a dog gets an upset stomach from spoiled food or garbage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stress<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a big life change<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diet change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a switch in their normal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Food intolerance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food allergies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A side effect of <\/span><b>a <\/b><b>viral infection<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>bacterial infection<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">salmonella<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parvovirus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distemper<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Canine enteric <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>medication<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that irritates the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>An underlying <\/b><b>health condition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammatory bowel disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, kidney disease, liver disease, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-serious-is-diarrhea-in-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How serious is diarrhea in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The seriousness of diarrhea in dogs can vary depending on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underlying cause<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the severity of the symptoms,&rdquo; said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.greatvet.com\/about-alex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Schechter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a DVM who works at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal hospital<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/burrwoodvet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burrwood Veterinary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Michigan. He continued. &ldquo;In most cases, diarrhea is a temporary issue that resolves on its own or with basic home care. However, there are certain signs that indicate diarrhea may be more than just a fleeting problem and could be a cause for concern.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Schechter explained that diarrhea could be a sign of a more serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health issue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if your dog has the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or diarrhea persisting for more than one or two days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloody diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lethargy or weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid weight loss&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-i-give-my-dog-for-diarrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can I give <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my dog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for diarrhea?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog isn&rsquo;t showing any of the concerning symptoms above, there are a few at-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home remedies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that may help your pup feel better in more mild <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cases of diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and improve your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog&rsquo;s stool<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"try-a-bland-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bland diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Your veterinarian may suggest changing the diet to bland, easily-digested food, like boiled chicken and rice,&rdquo; said Dr. Schechter<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bland diet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will not be your dog&rsquo;s new long-term diet, but rather what they&rsquo;ll eat on the day they&rsquo;re experiencing diarrhea and until they have normal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bowel movements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While these foods will help with some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cases of diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they may also help instances of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bland foods that most dogs can safely eat include cooked lean meats, white fish, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white rice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pasta, potato, and oatmeal. Start out with small amounts to see how your dog tolerates them before giving them larger amounts. Also, be sure you don&rsquo;t add any spices to these foods, as they can further upset your dog&rsquo;s stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"switch-to-a-specialty-dog-food\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switch to a specialty <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog food<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Specialty veterinary diets, such as Royal Canin <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are the best option to help ensure your dog is getting a completely balanced, nutrient-packed food whilst they recover from diarrhea,&rdquo; said Dr. Corinne Wigfall, the veterinary spokesperson for online dog training resource <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spiritdogtraining.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SpiritDog Training<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog foods<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are specially designed, they are high in energy, so your dog won&rsquo;t have to eat as much while their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrointestinal tract<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recovers. Dr. Wigfall added, &ldquo;It is highly palatable, meaning your dog should find it extra tasty, which is great if they have been suffering from reduced appetite.&ldquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"add-nutritional-supplements-to-their-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add nutritional supplements to their diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few supplements that may help keep your dog&rsquo;s stomach happy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One option is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probiotics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Just like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probiotics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help balance the human gut, it can also help your dog&rsquo;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digestive tract<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Products containing Kaolin help &lsquo;bind&rsquo; up diarrhea to restore a normal stool consistency,&rdquo; suggested Dr. Wigfall. She also recommends trying out oral <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrolytes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they can help keep your dog hydrated, as many dogs lose too much fluid when dealing with diarrhea and become dehydrated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When giving your dog <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or supplements, ensure that they are not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as these will not be properly formulated for your canine and could cause further issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-visit-your-veterinarian\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to visit your veterinarian<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s always better to be safe than sorry in regard to your dog&rsquo;s health. While sometimes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be nothing to worry about, Dr. Schechter explained four scenarios where your dog will need <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veterinary attention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sooner rather than later.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diarrhea lasting for more than 24 to 48 hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Prolonged diarrhea can cause dehydration and other more serious problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Presence of blood in the stool.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It&rsquo;s always helpful to look at the color of your dog&rsquo;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poop<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dark, bloody, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tarry<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stools require immediate attention from your veterinarian as they could indicate a serious underlying condition.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vomiting and other symptoms.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If your dog isn&rsquo;t just experiencing diarrhea but also symptoms like vomiting, lethargy, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loss of appetite<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this can also be a sign there is something more serious going on.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dogs with weakened <\/b><b>immune systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with chronic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to have serious complications as a result of diarrhea. You&rsquo;ll also want them examined by a vet to make sure it&rsquo;s nothing more serious.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these cases, your dog&rsquo;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veterinary care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will most likely include a physical exam, fecal testing, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and possibly take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x-rays<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to look for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foreign objects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Treatment will vary depending on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause of diarrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your dog. In the case of worms, your dog will be prescribed a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dewormer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take care of the issue. Fluids can also be given to restore hydration.
