People with diverticulitis often experience abdominal pain during or after eating a meal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating is a part of everyday life, so coping with a condition that is worsened by eating can be challenging. To help people with these issues, two gastroenterologists share the best way to manage diverticulitis pain and promote digestive health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-diverticulitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is diverticulitis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diverticulitis is a limited form of colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease that can be uncomfortable and painful. \u201cDiverticulitis is an infection of the colon,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Boxer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a gastroenterologist with Gastroenterology Associates of New Jersey. It stems from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diverticulosis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when small pouches (diverticula) develop in your digestive tract, mainly in the lower part of the large intestine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[Diverticulitis] occurs when diverticula, a small outpouching of the colon caused by a weakness in the colon wall, develop an infection,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ganjllc.com\/physician\/andrew-s-boxer-md\/\">Dr. Boxer<\/a> says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some cases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diverticulosis-vs-diverticulitis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diverticulosis don\u2019t progress to the point of infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it can be severe and require treatment when it turns into chronic, symptomatic diverticular disease. \u201cWe think that diverticulitis is caused by a backup of stool and other material into these little pockets [which causes] irritation, and then later infection,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/umg.rwjms.rutgers.edu\/doctor_page.php?phys_id=125744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ellen Stein, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gastroenterologist at Rutgers. She says people prone to constipation \u201cseem to get more diverticulitis than others.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While mild diverticulitis often goes away without treatment, more severe cases can be dire. \u201cDiverticulitis can be serious; it can be life-threatening,\u201d Dr. Boxer says. Sometimes it requires surgery to remove the infected portion of the colon, which poses its own risks. And even after surgery, diverticulitis can sometimes recur. Managing symptoms of diverticulitis and avoiding constipation is a priority for people who have had it or are at risk of developing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diet can have a lot to do with developing diverticulitis. \u201cP<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eople who eat low volumes of fruits, vegetables, and nuts tend to get diverticulitis more often than those who eat a healthy fiber-rich diet,\u201d says Dr. Stein. But even someone with a well-rounded diet could wind up with diverticulitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress can be another factor in developing the disease, but \u201cthere is no good evidence that stress causes diverticulitis,\u201d says Dr. Boxer. However, maintaining a healthy, low-stress lifestyle will improve your overall health, including your colon, potentially decreasing your risk of developing diverticulitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diverticulitis can result from other medications you take. Many pain meds, such as opioids or NSAIDs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are not recommended for people with diverticulitis because they can worsen symptoms and cause a flare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issues often arise from drugs that include constipation as a side effect, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anti-nausea medications, and some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Iron, which is important to maintaining a healthy diet, can also cause constipation when consumed in foods like red meat and when taken as a supplement. You should give your full health history to your healthcare provider\u2014 including how you eat and what over-the-counter medications and supplements you take\u2014to avoid increasing your risk of diverticulitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-triggers-diverticulitis-flare-ups\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What triggers diverticulitis flare-ups?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s called an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-does-a-diverticulitis-attack-feel-like\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attack or flare-up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when diverticulitis causes patients discomfort or pain; various triggers cause these. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people feel that small pieces of material, like the seeds from strawberries, crunchy small pieces of nuts, or other sharp things, can make diverticulitis worse,\u201d says Dr. Stein. While there is no evidence that organic material directly causes flare-ups, she says people with diverticulitis \u201cusually try to avoid these things that can get stuck in the diverticular pockets and then lead to infection or exacerbation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diverticulitis-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-fiber diverticulitis diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which includes many fruits with seeds, can prevent constipation, which in turn can prevent diverticulitis. The balance between eating enough fiber and not consuming plant or nut matter you believe may make your diverticulitis symptoms worse or cause a blockage can be tricky.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diverticulitis-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diverticulitis symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most commonly reported symptom of diverticulitis is abdominal pain. Other symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Change in bowel habits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rectal bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always seek medical attention for ongoing gastrointestinal issues to ensure you are not experiencing diverticulitis, other gastrointestinal diseases, or problems that can have a combination of these symptoms. Pay close attention to fever and chills, which can indicate the presence of an infection. When untreated, it can be serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-relieve-diverticulitis-pain-fast\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to relieve diverticulitis pain fast<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are some home remedies for acute diverticulitis pain, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is usually treated with a combination of conservative treatments and antibiotics. Always check with your healthcare provider if you are experiencing significant pain or signs of infection, such as fever.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Dr. Boxer says there\u2019s \u201cno best drink\u201d to relieve uncomplicated diverticulitis pain, drinking water is one of the most accessible remedies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A clear liquid diet can help in the short term,\u201d he says. Staying on a clear liquid diet\u2014water, sports drinks such as Gatorade, clear soup, broth, etc.\u2014during the initial treatment is essential to soothing your digestive system. You can reincorporate other foods once you\u2019re feeling better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Stein recommends a liquid diet for mild cases of diverticulitis, which is what most people experience. More painful flare-ups indicate a possible infection. She says these instances \u201cmay need antibiotics, a liquid diet, and time to resolve.\u201d Dr. Stein says severe diverticulitis flare-ups with an abscess, fistula, or infected pocket of fluid may need drainage, antibiotics, and even surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diverticulitis can take days to weeks to calm down. \u201cMost mild [and moderate] flares will take five to seven days to respond \u2026 and severe flares can take several weeks,\u201d says Dr. Stein. You may need to rest and limit your physical activity if you\u2019re experiencing symptoms or do not have as much energy as a result of a limited diet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-diverticulitis-go-away\/\"><b>Does diverticulitis go away?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-diverticulitis-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for diverticulitis pain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[The] worst thing is when a patient gets complicated diverticulitis. This is when the colon bursts and infection spills into the abdomen (peritoneal cavity),\u201d says Dr. Boxer. Infections in the peritoneal cavity can prove fatal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are experiencing persistent abdominal pain or signs of infection, go to the doctor to rule out other medical conditions or to confirm and treat diverticulitis. \u201cIf ever there is concern, a patient should see a doctor,\u201d Dr. Boxer says. \u201cAlarm signs are increased pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If temporary treatments don\u2019t work, seek medical advice. Unfortunately, Dr. Boxer says there is \u201cno long-term treatment\u201d for recurring bouts of diverticulitis. It\u2019s essential to reduce your risk factors with a high-fiber diet and treat mild flare-ups so they don\u2019t progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In severe cases, surgery can help repair or resolve diverticulitis issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pain management is essential to the treatment plan when someone is suffering.
