How long after taking ibuprofen can you drink alcohol?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts suggest combining alcohol and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can raise the risk of serious side effects, including kidney damage and liver problems and gastrointestinal bleeding. Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with brand names like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/midol-complete\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what to know if you\u2019re considering drinking alcohol and taking ibuprofen\u2014and why you might want to wait.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-safe-to-take-ibuprofen-with-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to take ibuprofen with alcohol?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally speaking, if you\u2019re not at increased risk, over-the-counter (OTC) ibuprofen, which is 200 mg to 400 mg, is safe to take before or after drinking alcohol\u2014in moderation. But, the key is moderation, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zinniahealth.com\/about\/team\/dr-david-hu-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Hu,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MD, head of psychiatry at Zinnia Health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/moderate-drinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">define moderate alcohol consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for men as two drinks or fewer per day and one drink or fewer per day for women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLife-threatening adverse events with ibuprofen, even in combination with alcohol, are extremely rare,\u201d Dr. Hu says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, there are certain groups who should be cautious when drinking alcohol and taking NSAIDs like ibuprofen for pain management. Say, for instance, you\u2019ve just taken ibuprofen for a headache, arthritis pain, or muscle pain and are headed out to a happy hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have just taken ibuprofen, it is generally better to wait a few hours before beginning to drink [alcohol], especially if you have any history of gastrointestinal illness,\u201d Dr. Green says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some alcohol recovery centers recommend waiting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/roots-recovery.com\/mixing-ibuprofen-and-alcohol-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an entire day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take ibuprofen after drinking alcohol, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoisrecoverycenter.com\/alcohol\/ibuprofen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warning that alcohol can remain in the body for up to 24 hours.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They also recommend waiting in between taking ibuprofen and then drinking alcohol. For example, the Illinois Recovery Center suggests waiting 10 hours between drinking and taking ibuprofen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Cleveland Clinic, ibuprofen is typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/is-it-bad-to-take-ibuprofen-every-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended for short-term use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only as long-term use carries health risks. However, doctors approve the long-term use of ibuprofen in some circumstances. Not only can taking an NSAID like ibuprofen with alcohol reduce the medication\u2019s effectiveness, but you also open yourself up to an alcohol and ibuprofen interaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On their own, alcohol and ibuprofen have their own side effects. If you drink too much alcohol in the short term, you can experience a hangover, pass out, or even risk alcohol poisoning. Over time, heavy alcohol use takes a toll on your body, including inflammation and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis). According to the NIAAA, side effects of drinking alcohol with ibuprofen include headaches, drowsiness, fainting, loss of coordination, nausea, upset stomach, and vomiting. More severe cases can put you at risk for breathing difficulties, heart problems, stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, rapid heartbeat, and internal bleeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth ibuprofen and alcohol are metabolized in the liver, which can stress out the organ and contribute to more long-term damage if done repeatedly,\u201d Dr. Green says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hu explains that \u201cthis can be particularly problematic for chronic alcoholics who may have a liver impairment or even cirrhosis from long-term alcohol use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alcohol-and-ibuprofen-interactions-to-watch-for\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol and ibuprofen interactions to watch for<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you combine alcohol and ibuprofen, you should keep an eye out for potential signs of complications\u2014especially if you are at high risk.
