Any of the inflamed diverticula may rupture and can cause scarring. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any inflammation can cause concern and indicate a more significant health problem, and diverticulitis can be challenging to manage as there are not always clear risk factors. Although many would like to identify their flare triggers to avoid symptoms, it\u2019s not always possible to predict or prevent them. For example, it\u2019s a myth that certain foods, such as seeds or nuts, will cause problems, according to Dr. Boxer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation is a leading cause of diverticulitis symptoms and flares. Chronic constipation can be painful, and the inability to move stool regularly causes colon blockage, which can inflame or damage the colon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"8-drugs-to-avoid-with-diverticulitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 drugs to avoid with diverticulitis<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since diverticulitis affects the colon and the passing of solids, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-constipation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications that cause constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or straining to pass a stool will make it worse, according to Dr. Stein. There are also classes of medications that can lead to an increased risk for diverticulitis and its complications, such as perforation. Here are 8 drugs that you should avoid if you have had diverticulitis in the past or are having a current flare.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-opioids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Opi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ids<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3785615\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pain-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increases the risk of diverticulitis. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9987253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also points to opioids leading to \u201cother complications of diverticulitis, including bleeding, sepsis, abscess formation, fistula formation, and obstruction.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-steroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Antihistamines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21956435\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that a high volume of histamine expression receptors could lead to diverticulitis complications. One\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7331903\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">case report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also found that iron supplements led to \u201cileus secondary to bowel obstruction from constipation.\u201d Ileus is a painful temporary paralysis of the small intestine or other part of the intestine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-blood-pressure-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Blood pressure medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcium-channel-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calcium channel blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCBs) such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amlodipine-besylate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amlodipine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treat hypertension, but they can have a negative effect on acute diverticulitis, according to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/jag.journalagent.com\/nci\/pdfs\/NCI-23540-RESEARCH_ARTICLE-ABDEL_JALIL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It showed that taking medications to lower blood pressure is \u201cassociated with a higher rate of diverticular hemorrhage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-blood-thinners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Blood thinners<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study looking at blood pressure medication also showed that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticoagulants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xarelto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xarelto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are likely to cause diverticular hemorrhage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8.
