Approximately 154 million (or 75%) of American adults drink coffee, and nearly half of U.S. adults drink it daily. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee consumption<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can improve mood, increase cognition, enhance exercise performance, and it helps some people with digestion. But is coffee a good remedy for constipation?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve likely felt the need to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after drinking your morning coffee, and you might wonder if it can help when you feel backed up. Here\u2019s what to know about coffee\u2019s laxative properties and if it should be a go-to fix for constipation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coffee-benefits\/\"><b>10 health benefits of coffee<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-coffee-make-you-poop\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does coffee make you poop?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re not alone if your morning cup of joe sends you straight to the bathroom to poop, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trent G. Orfanos, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of Integrative and Functional Cardiology at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Case Integrative Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Chicago. One older <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 29% of people reported an increased urge to defecate after drinking coffee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.caseintegrativehealth.com\/drorfanos\">Dr. Orfanos<\/a> says that there are several reasons why coffee can make you poop. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7824117\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicates that coffee contains acids that boost levels of gastrin and cholecystokinin (CCK) hormones. These hormones initiate a response called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK549888\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastrocolic reflex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which stimulates colon contractions and triggers the passage of waste through the rectum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe mechanism of how coffee stimulates motor activity (i.e. muscle contractions in the colon to propel the exit of stool) isn\u2019t totally clear but some evidence for chemicals in coffee, like cholinergic acid and melanoidins, are what might have the greatest impact on colorectal contractions,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/gastroenterology\/dr-arun-swaminath-md-11361885\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arun Swaminath<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, chief of gastroenterology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The stimulating effect of drinking coffee when you wake up plays into the body\u2019s natural digestive process. \u201cContractions in the colon tend to be strongest in the morning, which is also when most drink their daily coffee,\u201d Dr. Orfano explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee\u2019s caffeine content enhances its laxative effect, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/our-team\/shilpa-mehra-dang-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shilpa Mehra Dang, MD,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a double board-certified gastroenterologist and internist at Medical Offices of Manhattan. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCaffeine increases colon muscle contractions and stool movement, called peristalsis,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how long does it take for coffee to make you poop? It varies, but the stimulating effects can kick in quickly, says Dr. Orfanos. Some people report moving their bowels as soon as four minutes after drinking coffee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Dang explains that when you experience the laxative effects depends on your metabolism, general GI health, and your sensitivity to caffeine. Some people may feel the effects of coffee on their bowel movements 30 minutes to one hour after drinking it; in others, it might take a few hours\u2014or it might not happen at all, she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-coffee-help-with-constipation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does coffee help with constipation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee may work as a natural laxative to get your bowels moving. However, it may not be a good long-term option to relieve constipation in everyone, according to Dr. Orfanos. Chronic constipation may signify an underlying condition, such as endocrine disorders like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4790001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2699000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1738209\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurological conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coffee-and-diabetes\/\"><b>What you should know about coffee and diabetes<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking too much coffee may exacerbate certain conditions, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8241212\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33333105\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3036994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive bladder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Orfanos points out. He says there are better ways than coffee to relieve constipation, like adequate hydration and plenty of fiber.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as scientific studies go, there is little direct research about how effective coffee is when treating constipation, says Dr. Dang. More research is needed to find a clear link.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, coffee consumption could even worsen constipation, she says. While caffeine stimulates some people&#8217;s gastrointestinal tracts, others may become constipated or have other bad reactions. According to Dr. Dang, coffee can cause or exacerbate constipation for the following reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It can cause dehydration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coffee, a diuretic, may cause dehydration, hardening feces, and causing constipation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It can irritate the GI tract:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coffee&#8217;s acidity might irritate the stomach and intestines, which may increase constipation or gastrointestinal pain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It can disturb the balance of the gut microbiome:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coffee may upset gut flora, which affects digestion and bowel regularity, leading to constipation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It can cause dependency:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coffee&#8217;s laxative effects might become addictive and make bowel movements more difficult without it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If coffee worsens or amplifies your constipation, Dr. Dang suggests you restrict or avoid it and try other diet and lifestyle adjustments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-constipation-last\/\"><b>How long can constipation last?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-decaf-or-regular-coffee-better-for-constipation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is decaf or regular coffee better for constipation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1378422\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that decaffeinated coffee may help you poop, too. Even hot water has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27684632\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to speed up digestive system motility, so sipping a warm beverage can get things moving. But the caffeine in coffee increases its bowel-stimulating effect. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/9581985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that caffeinated coffee stimulated activity in the colon 60% more than water and 23% more than decaf coffee. So if your goal is to lighten your load, coffee with caffeine is your best bet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s generally safe to drink 400 mg of caffeine\u2014about four to five cups of coffee\u2014per day, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abnutritiontherapy.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashley Baumohl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian at Northwell Health\u2019s Lenox Hill hospital in New York. But it likely won\u2019t take that much to get the laxative effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAmong those who report an impact on bowel function after drinking coffee, most feel the effects after a single, 8-ounce cup of coffee,\u201d says Dr. Orfanos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s no recommended coffee dose for constipation relief, says Dr. Dang. She says some individuals may experience a bowel movement after one or two cups of coffee, but there are no medical guidelines. If you have any health issues, see a healthcare provider before using coffee to treat constipation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also find caffeine in tea, energy drinks, and some medicines. But Dr. Orfanos points out that coffee\u2019s effect on digestive motility results from a combination of factors, so caffeine is only part of the puzzle. He says if you want that \u201cneed to go\u201d effect you get from coffee, you won\u2019t get it from a different caffeine source.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long can you use coffee for constipation?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While coffee may be an acceptable option for occasional constipation relief, consult a healthcare provider for a long-term solution, says Dr. Orfanos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re trying to figure out why you\u2019re constipated, Baumohl advises asking yourself if you can answer \u201cyes\u201d to the following questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I drinking enough fluids?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I taking in fiber-rich foods that contain soluble and insoluble fibers?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I taking any medications that may be slowing down my digestive tract?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Am I engaging in enough physical activity?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not already doing all the above, Dr. Dang suggests making the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/digestive-diseases\/constipation\/treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat more whole grains, fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, and seeds to increase your fiber intake, which makes stools bulkier and promotes regularity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink a lot of water throughout the day to keep yourself from dehydrating, which can worsen constipation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engage in regular physical exercise to help move your bowels and improve your overall gut health.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from coffee, home remedies to relieve constipation include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fiber supplements (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/citrucel\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citrucel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metamucil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metamucil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:
