It\u2019s such a common\u2014and dangerous\u2014 problem that many organizations exist only to promote heart-healthy living, from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world-heart-federation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Heart Federation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They encourage people to protect their own hearts and inspire others (family, friends, colleagues) to do the same. The good news is that one health threat is highly treatable. There are many high triglyceride treatment and prevention options\u2014from statins to supplements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High cholesterol (total blood cholesterol of 200 mg\/dL or more) affects <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cholesterol\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 2 in 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> American adults. While there are no symptoms associated with this condition, it\u2019s tracked regularly in your annual physical. A complete blood cholesterol test (otherwise referred to as a lipid panel or lipid profile) provides the various types of cholesterol levels measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg\/dL). One cholesterol it tracks is triglyceride levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are triglycerides?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTriglycerides are a type of fat and the most common type of fat in your body,\u201d states Roshini Malaney, DO, a board-certified cardiologist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/manhattancardiology.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhattan Cardiology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York City. Similar to cholesterol, triglycerides are made in the liver and exist in certain foods, including butter, margarine, and oils, as well as other high-fat or high-carbohydrate foods. \u201cWhen we consume extra calories, the body converts the calories it doesn&#8217;t need to use right away into triglycerides, which are then stored in fat cells,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What qualifies as high levels of triglycerides?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/triglycerides.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MedlinePlus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the website powered by the United States National Library of Medicine), blood levels less than 150 mg\/dL fall under the triglycerides normal range, while anything higher\u2014known as hypertriglyceridemia\u2014can increase the risk for heart disease. \u201cElevated triglycerides can also be a very early sign of diabetes,\u201d states Kristin Thomas, MD, a board-certified internist and co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxhallmedicine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foxhall Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Washington, D.C. She adds that a high fasting triglyceride level should prompt additional testing, including fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extremely high triglycerides\u2014blood levels over 500 mg\/dL\u2014may be due to a genetic disorder and can increase the risk of pancreatitis, along with heart disease, including atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), Dr. Thomas, co-author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You Can Prevent A Stroke<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explains. \u201cIt can be seen alone or in association with many other conditions, as well, such as metabolic syndrome, hypothyroidism, fatty liver disease, and kidney disease,\u201d Dr. Malaney says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Triglycerides level chart<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are your triglyceride levels in the normal range? Dr. Malaney adds that it can also be a side effect of certain medications, such as some birth control pills, beta blockers, antipsychotic medications, and corticosteroids.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How to lower triglycerides<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several natural remedies for high triglycerides\u2014like diet and lifestyle changes\u2014that your healthcare provider may recommend trying first before prescriptions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Diet\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triglycerides come from the food we eat and occur naturally in the liver. Eating a low-sugar, lower-carbohydrate diet with lots of high-fiber foods rich in omega-3s can help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What are the best foods to eat to lower triglycerides?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the Mediterranean diet as a guide. Aim for 150 minutes per week (you can break it up into five, 30-minute sessions) of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physicalactivity\/basics\/adults\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderate-intensity exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like walking\u2014and add two days of strength training. Consult your healthcare provider before starting a new exercise program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>High triglycerides treatment options<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If lifestyle modifications fail to lower triglyceride levels, your healthcare provider may give you one of the following four prescriptions:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Statins<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStatins, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atorvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atorvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rosuvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosuvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are medications typically used to treat high cholesterol levels, as well as other risks for cardiovascular disease,\u201d Dr. Malaney says. She further explains that these drugs work by decreasing the liver\u2019s production of cholesterol and, at higher doses, can decrease triglyceride levels by 50%. \u201cAnd with these newer, more potent statins, both LDL (\u201cbad\u201d cholesterol) targets and triglyceride targets can be reached,\u201d Dr. Thomas adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even more encouraging: According to a December 2018 scientific statement released by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2018\/12\/10\/safety-of-statins-emphasized-in-new-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, side effects from statins tend to be rare, and their benefits far outweigh any possible risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/statin-side-effects\/\"><b>Read more about the side effects of statins<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Omega-3 fatty acids<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish oil tablets have been shown to decrease triglyceride levels by up to 30%, Dr. Malaney says. \u201cThese pills work by inhibiting the release of triglycerides from the liver and by stimulating the enzyme that clears triglycerides from the blood,\u201d she continues. Dr. Malaney further adds that prescription fish oil preparations, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lovaza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lovaza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, contain more active fatty acids than most non-prescription dietary supplements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. Fibrates\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fenofibrate-micronized\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fenofibrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/gemfibrozil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gemfibrozil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can lower triglyceride levels similarly to fish oil tablets. \u201cFibrates reduce the liver&#8217;s production of VLDL (the particle that circulates in the blood carrying triglycerides) while speeding up the removal of triglycerides from the blood,\u201d Dr. Malaney explains. However, she warns that these medicines should not be prescribed for patients with severe kidney or liver disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><b>Prescription discount card<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>The bottom line<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High triglyceride treatment can reduce cardiovascular risk by preventing conditions such as coronary heart disease and heart attack. There are several treatment options to help reduce LDL cholesterol, including diet, exercise, decreased alcohol consumption, statins, and supplements.
