Almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/conditions\/vertigo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experience vertigo at least once in their lifetime. Some people experience vertigo\u2014a nausea-inducing tilting or spinning sensation\u2014even when well-rested and hydrated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, two doctors share what to know about vertigo, what causes the condition, and how to treat it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-vertigo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is vertigo?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertigo is a balance-related condition that causes dizziness and a spinning sensation when a person is not moving. The attacks can last from seconds to days, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lindora.com\/dr-amy-lee-chief-medical-officer-lindora-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Lee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, RDN, chief medical officer at Lindora Clinic. She says dehydration or ear infections are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/living-with-vertigo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common triggers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; underlying conditions such as migraine or a vestibular disorder can also cause episodes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The condition is most prevalent in people <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/vertigo\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20370055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 and older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is more common in women than men. Most cases of persistent vertigo are due to problems with the vestibular system. This sensory system in the inner ear \u201cprovides your brain with information about balance, motion, and the location of your head and body in relation to your surroundings,\u201d according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/hearing\/dizziness-and-balance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Speech-Language-Hearing Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When there is a problem sending signals within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532978\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vestibular apparatus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a feeling of imbalance or that the world is spinning occurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertigo can also be a side effect of some health conditions, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labyrinthitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vestibular neuritis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/menieres-disease-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meniere\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head injury<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BPPV is one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/vertigo\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20370055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common causes of vertigo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Lee says BPPV is likely caused by misplaced pieces of calcium (canaliths) in the ear canal. These free-floating canaliths (like little pieces of sand) can upset the delicate vestibular system, creating a feeling of movement when standing still.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because vertigo is a symptom of several diagnoses rather than a diagnosis itself, it can take longer for healthcare providers to figure out the cause. Sometimes the exact cause of vertigo will remain unknown.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-exercises-to-help-with-vertigo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 exercises to help with vertigo<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you experience vertigo, you\u2019re not doomed to sit in a dizzy spell. There are exercises you can do to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/vertigo-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relieve the symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-epley-maneuver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Epley maneuver\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as the canalith repositioning procedure (CRP), the Epley maneuver, is used to alleviate the most common type of vertigo, BPPV. It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/treatment-tests-and-therapies\/home-epley-maneuver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dislodges the canaliths from your ear\u2019s semicircular canals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and brings them back to the utricle in the inner ear. According to a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4606415\/#:~:text=Epley%20maneuver%20can%20be%20considered,more%20effective%20than%20medicines%20alone.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Epley maneuver was deemed a \u201csafe and effective procedure to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo in [a] majority of patients.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should learn the Epley maneuver under a doctor&#8217;s or physical therapist&#8217;s guidance, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/linqapp.com\/megan_daley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Megan Daley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DPT, founder of Move On The Daley in Scottsdale, Arizona. After that, you can practice a version of the exercise at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is how to do the modified Epley maneuver that you can perform by yourself at home, according to Daley:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place a pillow about one foot from the top of your bed so that if you were to lay down, it would elevate your shoulders (not your head).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While sitting upright at the foot edge of the bed, turn your head in the direction that causes vertigo. For example, if that is your right side, you will turn your head to the right.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your head in the same position, quickly lie back so your shoulders are elevated, head hanging over the back of the pillow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay there for 30 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While holding your body still, slowly turn your head in the opposite direction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay still for another 30 seconds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly rotate your body so that it is in line with your head. You will end up lying on your side.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay in this position for 30 seconds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly sit upright while holding your head in the same turned position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit still for 30 seconds before turning your head to face forward.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat is one round of the maneuver,\u201d Daley says. \u201cTypically, I have people do this a couple of times a day until symptoms are fully resolved.\u201d This exercise will help move the canallith to a more appropriate part of the semicircular canal, to a position that does not cause vertigo. Brandt-Daroff exercises<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Epley, the Brandt-Droff exercises may relocate the canliths in your ear and help your body respond to confusion signals from your inner ear. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30034415\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 50 patients with vertigo found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/health-wellness\/health-encyclopedia\/he.brandt-daroff-exercise-for-vertigo.hw205649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brandt-Daroff exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Epley maneuvers were equally effective at treating symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is how to do the Brandt-Daroff exercise:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Begin in a seated position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lie down on one side with your head turned so your noise points up in a 45-degree position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest for 30 seconds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly move back into a seated position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat on the other side.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving slowly and intentionally when performing Brandt-Daroff exercises on your own is essential. \u201cIn general, avoid quick head movements,\u201d Daley says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-semont-maneuver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Semont maneuver<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Complete this exercise with the help of a healthcare provider or physical therapist to reduce the risk of falling and side effects. The Semont maneuver is very similar to the Epley maneuver. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8356850\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021 found that while both exercises are practical for treating vertigo, people report more dizziness after the Semont versus the Epley maneuver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is how to complete the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthy.kaiserpermanente.org\/health-wellness\/health-encyclopedia\/he.epley-and-semont-maneuvers-for-vertigo.hw205519\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semont maneuver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a healthcare provider:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit on the exam table with legs dangling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turn your head slightly away from the side that causes vertigo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor or physical therapist will quickly lower you onto the side that causes vertigo so that your head looks at the ceiling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold for 30 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor will quickly move you to the other side so your head looks down at the table.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold for 30 seconds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The doctor will help you sit upright again.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"4-half-somersault-maneuver\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Half-somersault maneuver<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8975417\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 43 patients with unilateral vertigo, the people who performed the half-somersault maneuver (HSM) had less post-exercise dizziness than those who completed the Epley maneuver. However, the Epley maneuver helps vertigo go away faster, with improvement after just one move (compared to repeated HSMs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how to complete a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cuanschutz.edu\/news-stories\/two-home-exercises-treat-vertigo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half-somersault maneuver<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for vertigo:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit on your knees on the floor and look straight up at the ceiling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower your head down to the floor in a somersault position.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With your crown resting on the floor, turn your head to the side that triggers vertigo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While keeping your face turned, quickly raise your head to back level.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While keeping your face turned, quickly raise your head fully upright.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once any vertigo symptoms go away, pull back into a seated position.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"vertigo-treatment-and-other-options\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertigo treatment and other options<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the best <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/vertigo-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vertigo treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> depends on the underlying cause of your symptoms. If vertigo is a symptom of a migraine attack, seek treatment options to prevent migraine. If dehydration triggers vertigo, focus on staying hydrated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When treating BPPV, the most common form of vertigo, healthcare providers focus on relieving uncomfortable symptoms. \u201cVertigo can go away by itself, but most people do ask for a medication,\u201d says Dr. Lee. In her practice, she often recommends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dramamine-motion-sickness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dramamine Motion Sickness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a brand name for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/meclizine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meclizine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an antihistamine), but if vertigo is secondary to an infection, she can prescribe other medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For minor vertigo, simply drinking enough water and moving slowly might be the fastest home remedies. In some cases, your primary care physician might recommend vestibular rehabilitation through physical therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you can treat minor or infrequent vertigo with maneuvers, hydration, or OTC medications, get help for longer-term issues.
