So, how can pharmacists encourage patients to be more physically active?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With nearly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90% of Americans living within 5 miles of a community pharmacy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pharmacists are the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most accessible healthcare professionals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This proximity allows pharmacists to engage with patients as often as they pick up their refills or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pharmacy-not-answering-phone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call the pharmacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirmed that Medicare patients visit their community pharmacies twice as often as they visit their primary care providers. Another study found that patients only see their primary care providers about four times a year, while they visit their community pharmacies roughly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35 times per year<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Pharmacists have a unique opportunity to build trusting relationships with patients and caregivers, supporting them along their health journey&#8217;s baby steps and milestones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-encourage-physical-activity-in-patients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to encourage physical activity in patients<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a pharmacist, many of your regular customers and patients will trust your advice. If you bring up the health benefits of an active lifestyle and how it will help them, most patients will not be offended, especially if you bring it up in a caring way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might seem awkward and out of your comfort zone to tell someone to start exercising, but remember it\u2019s in your patient\u2019s best interest. An analysis found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s13679-014-0110-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pharmacists can positively impact patients\u2019 weight management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> efforts. Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmjopen.bmj.com\/content\/6\/2\/e009828.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systematic review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deemed pharmacists effective in helping patients lose weight and encouraged community pharmacies to offer programs that promote a healthier lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 4 tips for how pharmacists can tout the benefits of an active lifestyle for their patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-discuss-the-financial-impact\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Discuss the financial impact.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patients may not consider exercising now an investment in their future self. However, pharmacists know the expenses and risks of taking multiple medications, especially as a person ages. Encourage exercise as a way for patients to reduce their need for costly drugs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most treatment guidelines for chronic diseases recommend lifestyle changes as the first-line treatment. Eating a healthier diet and being physically active are the primary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bmchealthservres.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12913-018-3023-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lifestyle interventions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can prevent people from needing to take medications later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research demonstrates that pharmacist-led care can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.2147\/IPRP.S108047#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">save patients thousands of dollars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by preventing hospital and emergency department visits. A three-day hospital stay costs roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/why-coverage-is-important\/protection-from-high-medical-costs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$30,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; a bariatric weight loss surgery can cost anywhere from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5509820\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$7,400 to $33,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is exercising can save money and you can help your patients understand that very real impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-focus-on-the-physical-and-mental-health-benefits-of-exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Focus on the physical and mental health benefits of exercise.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyweight\/effects\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess body weight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lead to many health problems like hypertension, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, and cardiovascular problems. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11136-008-9385-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clearly demonstrates a connection between obesity and diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. More than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/facts-in-pictures\/detail\/6-facts-on-obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.8 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> die yearly from weight-related diseases like heart disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacists can educate patients about the risk factors associated with being overweight and encourage them to make lifestyle changes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S266633761930006X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce their risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, physical activity can help prevent and reverse many weight-related diseases, especially Type 2 diabetes. When patients are refilling diabetes medications or requesting information about them, use the opportunity to inform patients about clinical trial results that may be meaningful to them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/article-abstract\/1486829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look AHEAD trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Type 2 diabetes was reversed more often in patients who implemented lifestyle interventions than in those who did not participate in physical activity and diet changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study found that losing more than 10% of body weight soon after diagnosis of the disease <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/dme.14122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doubled the likelihood of reversing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Type 2 diabetes after five years.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise can also reduce the risk of developing cancer. Evidence suggests that physical activity <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6527123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces the risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of developing bladder, colon, endometrial, esophageal, adenocarcinoma, renal, and gastric cancer by 10% to 20%. Likewise, moderate physical activity can prevent or delay the progression of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/20\/3\/511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">osteoarthritis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being physically active is also beneficial for your mental health. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jnnp.bmj.com\/content\/94\/5\/349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that exercising at any time in adulthood\u2014even as little as once a month\u2014is linked with higher cognitive skills. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0149763419305640?casa_token=b_AaU_BT0m8AAAAA:B8iICKnwbN8Qao27N3WLGH1EYbeWNzJjT_DQ5iiT4dUzxTJcSVc58lvbBmD75nVJ1v9cX28SmA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that physical activity can promote self-esteem and self-efficacy while decreasing symptoms of depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-encourage-them-to-start-small\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Encourage them to start small.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommend gradual exercise, with something as simple as a short daily walk and working toward more intense workouts. The CDC recommends exercising for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/guidelines\/adults.html\">150 minutes<\/a> every week<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can be done in just five sessions of 30 minutes each. The CDC also recommends muscle-strengthening activities two or more days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your patient seem unwilling to start exercising? That\u2019s okay; they might not be ready yet to make a big change. But they don\u2019t need to enroll in CrossFit to start on a journey toward more physical activity. Instead, encourage them to start making small changes in their lifestyle that don\u2019t take much time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small changes that could have a big impact toward becoming more active include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the stairs instead of the elevator, if able<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Park farther away from the grocery store door in order to walk a longer distance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk on the treadmill while watching TV instead of sitting on the couch<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk rather than drive to nearby destinations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get a dog (or walk a friend\u2019s or neighbor\u2019s dog) to ensure multiple walks every day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invest in a bicycle to replace some car trips\u2014which is good for increasing exercise and saves money on gas<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"4-explain-how-it-can-improve-their-specific-health-condition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Explain how it can improve their specific health condition.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a patient requests first-fill counseling when picking up a medication for blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes, you can use this time to mention the benefits of exercise. Likewise, if a patient complains about the expense of their medications or mild but bothersome side effects from a drug, mention that increasing physical activity and losing weight could help manage or even reverse their condition. Explain that these lifestyle changes could potentially lead to their provider having them stop that expensive or bothersome drug as it may no longer be necessary. Be sure to be sensitive to the fact that they have tried, and failed, to lose weight in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current popularity of GLP-1 drugs is a golden opportunity for pharmacists to remind patients that these medications work better when used along with lifestyle changes\u2014not as a replacement to a healthy lifestyle. Pharmacists can naturally encourage physical activity when patients have questions about prescriptions for weight-loss medications, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/save-on-wegovy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/saxenda-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When interacting with patients taking these medications, ask about their exercise routine and diet. Assess their readiness to change and set achievable and realistic patient goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If patients aren\u2019t ready to take medication for weight loss, that\u2019s okay. Remind them that diet and exercise are effective when consistent and that weight loss shouldn\u2019t happen too quickly. The CDC recommends a gradual, steady weight loss of about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyweight\/losing_weight\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1-2 pounds per week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to keep the weight off consistently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacists are readily accessible in the community and can engage with patients more often than other healthcare providers. Exercising regularly can help patients feel better while reducing their risk of developing a chronic disease and saving them money. Pharmacists should make the most of their opportunity to support and educate their patients on how physical activity can improve and prolong their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above all, approach the situation with genuine care and concern, kindly emphasizing that increasing physical activity is in their best interest.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It can be awkward to tell someone they should exercise more.
