If this has ever happened to you, you most likely have experienced the chills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:6849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;9&quot;:1,&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:0},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\" data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills (otherwise known as shivering) are the rapid contracting and releasing of muscles to regulate the body\u2019s internal temperature, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwell.edu\/find-care\/find-a-doctor\/emergency-medicine\/dr-payal-sud-md-11359580\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payal Sud<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the associate chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at North Shore University Hospital in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manhasset, New York.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why do we get body chills, and, more importantly, how do we relieve them fast? Read on to learn everything you should know about this symptom that could be a sign of a few illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-causes-chills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes chills?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several reasons someone might experience the chills, ranging from being in cold temperatures to being sick. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cold environment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Whether it\u2019s time spent outside in the snow or inside next to an overzealous air conditioner, you might experience the chills as your body tries to warm itself. Getting wet in non-freezing temps can also cause chills. (Think: a rainy autumn run or a late spring swim.) \u201cIf you have wet clothes on, as the water evaporates, it&#8217;s taking even more heat away from your body,\u201d Dr. Sud says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Viral infections:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Oftentimes, chills precede a fever and can be a sign that your immune system is trying to fight something off. Viral infections such as the common cold, influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 are accompanied by chills. (It\u2019s worth noting that while chills often accompany a fever, they don&#8217;t always. You can have a fever without chills and chills without a fever.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bacterial infections:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chills may also be present during a bacterial infection, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI), strep throat, pneumonia (which can be caused by a virus or bacteria), and even sepsis. (If you suspect you have sepsis, seek medical care immediately.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Malaria:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The symptoms of this mosquito-borne disease typically include chills and fever, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/malaria\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hormone shifts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Women in perimenopause or menopause experiencing hot flashes often sweat and then afterward have chills. Additionally, men or women may experience chills if they have hypothyroidism (in which the body doesn\u2019t produce enough thyroid hormone).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anemia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This condition occurs when there aren\u2019t enough red blood cells (or hemoglobin) to transport oxygen in the blood. Dr. Sud says that women with heavy periods may experience chills during their menstrual cycle. \u201cNot having enough blood circulating in your body can make you feel chilly,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><b>Hypoglycemia<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For someone with diabetes, low blood sugar can trigger shivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anesthesia and withdrawals:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> During surgical procedures in which anesthesia is used, body temperature will usually drop, so coming out of anesthesia, you may feel cold. The same goes for coming off of a medication or drug cold turkey.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Extreme stress:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Here\u2019s one that might not have been on your radar. Heightened emotional states can sometimes cause a shivering response. \u201cIf someone is in a situation where they feel fear, that can activate the nervous system and cause chills,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/jennifer-corliss-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Corliss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, family medicine physician at UCHealth in Colorado.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms-that-occur-with-chills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms that occur with chills<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shivering, goosebumps, and pale skin often accompany chills. Other symptoms will vary depending on the causes of your chills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, if you\u2019re shivering due to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/uti-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UTI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may also experience frequent urination and abdominal pain, as those are common symptoms of that infection. Once you know the cause (environmental versus infection, for instance), you can choose the method that makes the most sense for you. Here are four approaches to try.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-get-to-a-warmer-environment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Get to a warmer environment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your internal temperature has dropped because you\u2019re outside in the cold or sitting in a drafty room, move to a location with a higher temperature. You may need to come inside from the outdoors, close a window, turn down the air conditioner (or the heater up), or take a hot shower. These should all help raise your core temperature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-cover-yourself-with-a-blanket\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Cover yourself with a blanket\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter the cause of your body chills, making yourself cozy and comfortable will go a long way toward finding some relief. \u201cDrinking a warm cup of tea and making sure that you have your robe or warm blanket on are all-natural ways to help bring down the chills and to eliminate them,\u201d Dr. Corliss says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suppose your body is alternating between chills and fever. In that case, you may need to shed the robe or blanket to reduce your body temperature if you\u2019re overheating during the fever stage, and that\u2019s okay, says Dr. Corliss. Follow your body\u2019s signals to know whether to bundle up or remove a layer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-take-over-the-counter-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Take over-the-counter medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your chills are caused by an infection like the common cold or COVID-19, there are OTC medicines you can pick up at your pharmacy to help relieve your symptoms. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><b>Acetaminophen<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is one of the most common medicines for treating chills, fever, and body aches and pain (known by its brand name <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Dr. Sud cautions against taking Tylenol if you have liver problems and warns against accidental \u201cdouble-dosing\u201d of acetaminophen, as many combination medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nyquil-severe-cold-flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NyQuil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dayquil-severe-vapocool\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DayQuil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/theraflu-cold-cough\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TheraFlu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also contain the medicine. Check the labels to ensure you\u2019re not taking multiple medications at one time that contain acetaminophen.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><b>Ibuprofen<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Known by brand names like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil-cold-sinus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ibuprofen can help treat chills. Since it can irritate the stomach, Dr. Sud recommends taking it with food. (Be mindful if you have kidney problems, as ibuprofen can worsen them.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin-low-dose\"><b>Aspirin<\/b><\/a><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While this medication reduces <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7185399\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fever and chills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s primarily used as a blood thinner. Dr. Sud stresses that those already on blood thinners must exercise caution in taking aspirin. (Because of aspirin\u2019s link to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/reyes-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reye\u2019s Syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a rare health condition that causes swelling in the liver and brain, you should not give aspirin to children for fever and chills.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, if you\u2019re fighting off an infection, Dr. Corliss stresses drinking plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated. And be sure to get plenty of rest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-address-underlying-medical-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Address underlying medical conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If another health issue is causing your chills, proactively managing your condition should alleviate your shivers. For instance, if you have diabetes and experience hypoglycemia, Dr. Sud recommends checking your blood sugar levels and drinking juice or taking a glucose tablet to regulate them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-to-see-a-doctor-for-chills\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to see a doctor for chills<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chills will often go away independently with regular home care as your body fights whatever infection may be causing them. But there are instances in which you will need to seek medical attention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have diabetes and your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-raise-blood-sugar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar is very low<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you need to raise your blood sugar levels to above 80 and get evaluated by a healthcare provider. Dr. Sud recommends seeing your healthcare provider immediately when you have chills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, if you have a persistent high fever (usually 102 degrees F and above, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/treating-fever-in-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Medical School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), that\u2019s an indication you should see a healthcare provider.
