As of 2020, it was the 18th most prescribed medication, with almost six million Americans filling nearly 29 million prescriptions.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin is categorized in an antidepressant class known as norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs). It works by blocking norepinephrine and dopamine (neurotransmitters or chemical messengers) from being reabsorbed, which helps increase norepinephrine and dopamine levels in the brain. This helps improve mood as well as memory and alertness. Because many antidepressants are also used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/anxiety-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, many people ask if Wellbutrin can also be used to treat anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-wellbutrin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Wellbutrin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before discussing Wellbutrin for anxiety, let&rsquo;s talk more about this medication. Wellbutrin contains the active ingredient bupropion and is available in three formulations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immediate-release (Wellbutrin); available as generic bupropion only<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12-hour sustained-release, which is generally dosed twice a day; available as both brand (Wellbutrin SR) and generic (bupropion SR)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24-hour extended-release, which is usually dosed once a day; available as both brand (Wellbutrin XL) and generic (bupropion XL)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three formulations are FDA-approved to treat major depressive disorder (depression). Additionally, Wellbutrin XL is FDA-approved to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 12-hour sustained-release form of bupropion is sometimes prescribed to help people stop smoking. It&rsquo;s commonly known by the brand name Zyban, although the brand name is no longer available in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"off-label-uses-for-wellbutrin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off-label uses for Wellbutrin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin is not FDA-approved for anxiety. If a healthcare provider prescribes Wellbutrin for anxiety, it would be considered <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label prescribing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is when a healthcare provider prescribes a medication for use that is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition to anxiety, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470212\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label uses of Wellbutrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To treat sexual dysfunction caused by antidepressants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/adhd-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/bipolar-1-vs-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD in children and adolescents<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"wellbutrin-for-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin for anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ajp.psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/10.1176\/appi.ajp.2020.20030305\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with depression also experience anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In general, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2015\/0501\/p617.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressant medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the first choice of treatment for anxiety. However, usually, an SSRI antidepressant such as Lexapro (escitalopram) or SNRI antidepressant such as Effexor (venlafaxine) is recommended (and FDA-approved for both depression and anxiety).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Wellbutrin is FDA-approved for the treatment of depression, but not anxiety, using Wellbutrin for anxiety would be considered an off-label use. Wellbutrin is not classified as an anti-anxiety medication.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9988222\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology notes that Wellbutrin has some advantages over other antidepressants&mdash;Wellbutrin is less likely to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cause weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cause sexual side effects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cause sedation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Induce mania<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers note that some healthcare providers are reluctant to prescribe Wellbutrin because they think it may worsen anxiety. The study examined many clinical trials and found that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and Wellbutrin were similarly effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The positive results led researchers to conclude that Wellbutrin can be an effective treatment option, similar to an SSRI antidepressant, in people with depression and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical studies, some people taking Wellbutrin for depressive symptoms <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a side effect. However, these numbers are small, and some people who took a placebo (inactive medicine) also reported experiencing anxiety. (In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2009\/018644s039s040.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 2% of participants stopped taking Wellbutrin due to side effects like anxiety, agitation, or trouble sleeping.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because everyone has a different medical history, the best way to determine if Wellbutrin will help you with anxiety is to talk to your healthcare professional. You can also ask about other methods to help you cope with anxiety, such as cognitive behavioral therapy with a mental health professional.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wellbutrin-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before taking Wellbutrin, tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins, and supplements.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of food and beverage interactions, there are several to be aware of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a695033.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Alcohol<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Alcohol can worsen the side effects of Wellbutrin. Additionally, drinking too much alcohol&mdash;or abruptly stopping alcohol use&mdash;can increase the risk of seizures.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Caffeine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Consuming too much can increase the risk of high blood pressure. Consult your healthcare provider about caffeine consumption.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin can also interact with certain medications, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that help you sleep, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ambien\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien (zolpidem)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, anti-seizure medications, or benzodiazepines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax (alprazolam)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: stopping one of these medicines abruptly can increase the risk of seizure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine: The combination can cause dangerously high blood pressure. An MAOI should be separated from Wellbutrin by at least 14 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritonavir\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritonavir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, lopinavir, efavirenz, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tegretol\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbamazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenobarbital\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenobarbital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and phenytoin: These medications can decrease bupropion levels in the body<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take certain medications, Wellbutrin could increase the levels of the medication in the body. You may need a lower dose of the other medication, including certain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as venlafaxine, nortriptyline, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paroxetine-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fluoxetine, or sertraline), antipsychotics (haloperidol, risperidone, thioridazine), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/beta-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta-blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as metoprolol), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antiarrhythmics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 1C antiarrhythmics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (propafenone and flecainide).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a full list of drug interactions, and others may occur. Do not take higher doses than prescribed. Wellbutrin is not safe for everyone. The healthcare provider will weigh potential benefits and risks in these cases. If the decision is made to start treatment with Wellbutrin, the patient will be closely monitored.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wellbutrin-dosages-for-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellbutrin dosages for anxiety<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Wellbutrin is not FDA-approved to treat anxiety disorders, there are no guidelines for dosage for anxiety. Your healthcare provider can determine the dosage based on general prescribing guidelines.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if your healthcare provider starts you on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may be prescribed a dose of 150 mg once daily for three days, and then you will increase the dose to 150 mg twice daily thereafter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, if your healthcare provider prescribes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you may be prescribed a dose of 150 mg once daily. After about four days, the healthcare provider may recommend increasing the dose to 300 mg once daily&mdash;or staying at 150 mg daily.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always store Wellbutrin at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it is time to stop taking Wellbutrin, your doctor will advise you on a tapering schedule.
