These versatile medications are used for everything from treating cold and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-symptoms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reducing fevers and relieving pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two drugs have different mechanisms of action and different ways they are metabolized by the body, so you can take them concurrently (under a healthcare provider\u2019s supervision). When alternating Tylenol and Motrin, they can decrease more severe pain, such as those associated with toothaches, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/migraine-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, certain surgery recoveries, sinus pain, and back pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering that Tylenol and Motrin are both readily available over the counter, the ability to take both together makes them a convenient\u2014and often more affordable\u2014treatment than prescription pain relievers. But before you head to the drug store, here\u2019s what you need to know about combining these two medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Motrin and Tylenol together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking Motrin (ibuprofen) and Tylenol (acetaminophen) together can be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe and effective for pain relief when done correctly,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/providers.keckmedicine.org\/provider\/Raj+Dasgupta\/205763\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a quadruple board-certified doctor and an assistant program director of Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Southern California. That\u2019s because the two drugs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-vs-tylenol\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work differently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetaminophen (most commonly sold under the brand name Tylenol) works by affecting the brain\u2019s perception of temperature and pain, while ibuprofen (most commonly sold under the brand names Motrin and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that reduces inflammation and fever by inhibiting enzymes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><b>Ibuprofen savings<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen-extra-strength\"><b>Acetaminophen savings<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple studies, including a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2791549\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2010 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> focused on pain treatment after oral surgery, found the alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen to be successful. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6371943\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the Journal of Pain Research, the combination of ibuprofen and acetaminophen provides similar efficacy to the combination of certain low-dose opioids with acetaminophen and can reduce the need for or reliance on opioids for severe pain. This can make the Tylenol and Motrin combination a pretty compelling option for anyone looking to reduce their exposure to opioids\u2014especially those at high risk for substance use disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things are a little less definitive when talking about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alternating-tylenol-and-motrin-for-fever-in-child\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While there has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3374685\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combining acetaminophen and ibuprofen for treating pain in kids, it hasn\u2019t been as thoroughly studied as it has in adults. To be safe, caregivers should consult a pediatrician before administering combined medications for children. Tylenol is dosed by weight and has no age restrictions. Motrin is also dosed by weight, but not given to children under 6 months of age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alternating-tylenol-and-motrin-for-fever-in-child\/\"><b>Can you use Motrin and Tylenol to bring down a child\u2019s fever?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All that said, while it\u2019s possible to take acetaminophen and ibuprofen concurrently, Dr. Dasgupta notes it\u2019s important to follow proper dosing and consult a healthcare provider to make sure the combination of the two analgesics is compatible with your medical conditions and any other medications you may be taking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible that a provider would prescribe Maxigesic, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aftpharm.com\/news\/maxigesic-rapid-tablets-gain-us-fda-approval\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently approved medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that contains both ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Dr. Dasgupta says the benefit of which is it \u201callows an individual to take a lower maximum daily dose of each medication,\u201d which reduces the main side effects of each: gastrointestinal and kidney irritation for ibuprofen and liver inflammation for acetaminophen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to take Tylenol and Motrin together<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because it\u2019s safe to take Tylenol and Motrin together doesn\u2019t mean you should default to the combination every time you experience pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking Tylenol and Motrin together is primarily done to manage a more moderate to severe pain level,\u201d says Ailey Pestcoe, Pharm.D., a clinical quality assurance staff pharmacist at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aspenrxhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Aspen RxHealth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adding that patients may find the relief offered by the two medications to be comparable to the opioid Vicodin (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydrocodone-acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrocodone-acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). For more mild pain relief, either drug may be used independently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both Tylenol and Motrin can be used as a fever reducer, Tylenol may be preferable because it typically works faster, taking effect within 30 minutes, Dr. Pestcoe says. By contrast, Motrin achieves its maximum fever-reducing effects in two to four hours and can last up to six hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main side effects also differ between the two: gastrointestinal and kidney irritation for ibuprofen, and liver inflation for acetaminophen they include liver inflation. So the choice of which to use may depend on whether a patient has concerns about those organs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, if you\u2019re going to take only one, the choice depends on personal health considerations\u2014like those side effects\u2014and it\u2019s important to follow recommended dosages and guidelines from a healthcare provider when using either medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to alternate Tylenol and Motrin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re going to treat a condition with both Tylenol and Motrin, you should alternate the medications rather than taking them at exactly the same times. The recommendations vary based on age, but Dr. Pestcoe says the general rule is to separate the medications by four to six hours. Tylenol is usually dosed on a four- to six-hour schedule, while Motrin is typically every six to eight hours.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an individual with no liver issues, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of acetaminophen is 325 to 625 mg every four to six hours as needed (or 1000 mg every 6 hours) and not to exceed 4,000 mg in a 24-hour period. Assuming the individual has no gastrointestinal issues and normal kidney function, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/ibuprofen-oral-route\/proper-use\/drg-20070602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">standard dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of ibuprofen is 200 to 400 mg every four to six hours as needed and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthservices.brown.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/handouts\/Pain-Fever-20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to exceed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2,400 mg in 24 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlternating Tylenol and Motrin can generally be staggered by about two to three hours,\u201d Dr. Dasgupta says, cautioning that this is a \u201cvery general guideline\u201d and should first be discussed with a healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Check with your healthcare provider for safe dosing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternating ibuprofen and acetaminophen can be a safe and effective pain and fever reliever. Because the medications have distinct side effects, though, it\u2019s important to consult a healthcare provider and ensure you\u2019re approaching your treatment safely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, Tylenol and Motrin should be alternated every two to three hours, making sure to take the correct doses and not to exceed the maximum safe dose of either within 24 hours. Before taking Tylenol or Motrin (together or separately), you should double-check that you\u2019re not already taking other medications containing acetaminophen or ibuprofen (such as cold and flu medicine).
