That makes it one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions in kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, despite its frequency, there are many ADHD myths and misconceptions about what the condition <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entails. As with other mental health conditions, these misunderstandings are harmful. They perpetuate stigma\u2014which can delay diagnosis or treatment, and leave people feeling ashamed or ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-myth-1-adhd-isn-t-a-real-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD Myth #1: ADHD isn\u2019t a real disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>ADHD Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People often question, \u201cIs ADHD real?\u201d It\u2019s misunderstood as bad behavior. The truth is, it\u2019s a proven medical condition. Its defining symptoms were first described in 1902, according to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC). It\u2019s been recognized as a legitimate diagnosis <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since 1980<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the symptoms guidebook for psychiatrists and physicians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lanpsy\/article\/PIIS2215-0366(17)30049-4\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows there are differences between an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicalpsychiatryjournal.com\/article\/S0006-3223(09)01415-2\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD brain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and one without it\u2014differences in the size of certain segments, and the connections between them. This impacts how quickly the brain matures, and how quickly it understands and responds to cues from the outside environment. In other words, what looks like acting out is a legitimate neurological difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-myth-2-it-s-not-adhd-it-s-bad-parenting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD Myth #2: It\u2019s not ADHD, it\u2019s bad parenting.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>ADHD Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD is a biological condition,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/digcoaching.com\/biography\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeff Copper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/digcoaching.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DIG Coaching Practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.attentiontalkradio.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention Talk Radio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.attentiontalkvideo.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention Talk Video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meaning, kids with ADHD don\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to misbehave. They aren\u2019t choosing to disobey their parents wishes. More discipline won\u2019t fix it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many interpret ADHD behaviors as purposeful defiance\u2014interrupting conversations, constant fidgeting, or staring into the distance when someone\u2019s talking. In actuality, these are expressions of the core symptoms of the condition: impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention. Children don\u2019t do these things because their parents haven\u2019t taught them they are wrong. They do them because their brain chemistry makes it harder to control impulses and direct focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-myth-3-people-with-adhd-are-just-lazy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD Myth #3: People with ADHD are just lazy.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>ADHD Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Like any medical condition, just trying harder doesn\u2019t eliminate ADHD symptoms. It\u2019s like asking someone with a vision impairment to \u201cjust see better\u201d without the aid of glasses. People with ADHD are often already putting in a superhuman effort to fit in to a world that isn\u2019t designed for their neurodiverse brains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not a problem of willpower or laziness. It\u2019s a difference in how the brain understands and acts on priorities. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD is not about motivation, it&#8217;s about brain chemistry differences that make it hard to stay focused and initiate and complete tasks,\u201d explains Melissa Orlov, author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1886941971\/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ADHD Effect on Marriage<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThose with ADHD are some of the hardest workers I&#8217;ve seen\u2014they have to constantly work hard to keep ADHD symptoms from getting in their way. In fact, girls are just as likely to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the condition. But because of this misconception, boys are over twice as likely to be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnosed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with ADHD, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/adhd.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/20385342\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that boys are more likely to have stereotypical \u201cexternalizing\u201d behaviors like hyperactivity, while girls tend to have predominantly inattentive symptoms, like daydreaming. But that\u2019s not always the case. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cADHD isn&#8217;t just about hyperactivity, so boys and men can have the distracted [inattentive] version of ADHD, without the hyperactivity, just as girls and women can have both the distracted version and hyperactive version of ADHD,\u201d says Orlov. \u201cADHD is about brain chemistry and is not linked to gender or intelligence. The reason we associate it with boys is that more boys than girls display the hyperactive symptoms and they are easier to spot than the distracted symptoms. This doesn&#8217;t preclude girls from being hyperactive, though.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A late, or missed, diagnosis can mean fewer accommodations at school to help them succeed, which can impact performance at school and self-esteem. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-myth-5-you-outgrow-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD Myth #5: You outgrow ADHD.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>ADHD Fact: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was once thought that ADHD was a childhood condition. Now, it\u2019s accepted that it continues into adulthood\u2014though symptoms may change as a person gets older. Nearly 70% of people who were diagnosed as children still have symptoms in adolescence and beyond, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/afp\/2000\/1101\/p2091.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Family Physicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/when-medication-wears-off-adhd-rebound\/\">When ADHD medication wears off<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-myth-6-medication-is-the-only-treatment-and-it-leads-to-addiction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD Myth #6: Medication is the only treatment, and it leads to addiction.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>ADHD Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/128\/5\/1007\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAP) recommends behavior therapy as the first line of treatment for preschoolers, and a combination of behavior therapy and medication for older children and adults. There are a number of natural treatments for ADHD, such as exercise and nutritional changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications are just one tool in the toolkit for treating ADHD, and many research studies demonstrate that using multiple treatments, such as medications combined with behavioral therapy, improves outcomes,\u201d Orlov says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents are often concerned that the stimulant medications used to treat ADHD are addictive. Yet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.additudemag.com\/adhd-stimulant-medication-addiction-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show for people with ADHD, the effect is the opposite. Treating ADHD is likely to reduce the risk of substance abuse problems, possibly because there is less self-medication with alcohol and drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think you or your child might have ADHD, visit your doctor.
