It\u2019s also generally inexpensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommended dosage of amoxicillin for dogs also varies based on two variables: their body weight and the condition being treated. \u201cYour vet will calculate the dose based on these two conditions,\u201d Dr. Bonk says<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"general-dosage-guidelines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General dosage guidelines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, your vet will prescribe a 5 mg per pound dose of amoxicillin twice daily. So, if you have a 20-pound pup, he may receive 100 mg two times a day. The dose duration is an important factor in how well amoxicillin will work for your dog\u2019s particular case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"amoxicillin-forms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin forms<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin for dogs has the same active ingredient as the human medication and comes in a few formulations, including tablets and injections. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSmall dogs will commonly be prescribed an oral suspension that allows for smaller dosages, and larger dogs will typically be prescribed capsules or sometimes tablets,\u201d says Dr. LeHoullier. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your vet will determine the best form depending on how likely your dog is to accept a pill, the severity of the infection, and other underlying health conditions. Tablets and capsules can be kept at room temperature, while liquids must be refrigerated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"administration-methods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Administration methods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tablets can be administered at home; if your dog won\u2019t eat the medicine directly, you can use a pill pocket treat or hide the amoxicillin in a favorite food. Injections typically need to be administered by a medical professional in your veterinarian\u2019s office, but they\u2019re a good choice for severe infections because they take effect more quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your provider prescribes a tablet that is also available for humans, you can fill it at your own pharmacy. However, like most antibiotics, there are a few common side effects of amoxicillin, mostly affecting the gastrointestinal system. \u201cAmoxicillin may cause some stomach issues for your pup, especially if given on an empty stomach,\u201d Dr. Bonk says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal pain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog\u2019s side effects are severe or very uncomfortable, ask your vet if probiotics or a specific diet could help. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201ccan be minimized by giving the medication with food and following the instructions on the prescription label,\u201d says Dr. Teegan Wheaton, Owner and Medical Director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goodvets.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoodVets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Castle Rock, set to open next month in Denver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of an allergic reaction include hives, skin rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, and trouble walking. The antibiotic stays in the system for 24 hours in most cases, so side effects should abate by then<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog is experiencing discomfort while on amoxicillin, you should contact your veterinarian immediately,\u201d says Dr. Wheaton<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The good news is, your pup is likely to feel better shortly after you start giving them the medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After oral administration, it takes amoxicillin about 1.5-2 hours to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.veterinarians.org\/amoxicillin-for-dogs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reach therapeutic concentrations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the body,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d says Dr. Wheaton. However, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these concentrations may be reached in a couple of hours, it may take several doses over several days to get the desired effects of the drug. That is why it is important to follow the dosing instructions exactly as directed by the veterinarian and follow up with them if you feel the infection is not fully treated,\u201d she says. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your pet is not improving after a couple of days, take them back to the vet. They may need a different antibiotic or course of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if your dog seems to be feeling totally better after one or two doses, be sure to give them the entire course prescribed. Just like in humans, stopping the medicine early can lead to antibiotic resistance and the infection coming back, necessitating a stronger, different drug that could have more severe side effects. It\u2019s also possible for your dog to be asymptomatic but still infectious, spreading bacteria to other dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-amoxicillin-safe-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is amoxicillin safe for dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While amoxicillin is generally considered safe for dogs, there are some drug interactions to be aware of. \u201cAmoxicillin can interact with other antibiotics and some immunosuppressive medications,\u201d Dr. Bonk says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to give your vet your dog\u2019s full health history, including any medications or supplements your dog is taking. If your pet has had this type of infection before, mention it and note which antibiotic they received, how they reacted to it, and if it worked well or if a second drug was needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/penicillin-allergy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic to penicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its relatives, including amoxicillin.
